Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in fish causes loss of product quality. Oxidative rancidity causes loss of nutritional value and undesirable color changes. Therefore, powerful antioxidant extracts may provide a relatively low cost and natural means to reduce oxidation, resulting in longer, higher quality and higher value shelf life of foods.

In this study, we measured synergistic effects of red cabbage antioxidant and vacuum packaging on lipid oxidation in fresh tilapia patties using thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay, peroxide value (PV), pH and color analysis.

This study provides valuable insights into cow-calf producer and feedlot operator succession plans for transferring cattle operations upon exiting the industry. Across both cow-calf producers and feedlot operators, about 50% expect to be raising cattle for 10 more years or less; however, about 39% of these producers do not have a succession plan in place. Cow-calf producers view a rural lifestyle, self-employment, working with livestock, and working with family as the biggest attractions to future generations entering beef cattle production. Cow-calf producers view environmental regulations, land tax policy, and expansion of corn and soybean acres as the biggest obstacles. Feedlot …

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (the Department) commissioned ACIL Allen Consulting to conduct a study into collaboration in the northern beef supply chain. The study is part of the Northern Beef Futures (NBF), a four year $15 million project led by the Department and funded by Royalties for Regions.

The aim of the study was to scope a framework for measuring collaboration in the northern beef supply chains; and develop an implementation plan for ways to improve collaboration that will benefit the development of the northern beef industry.

South Korea is one of the largest beef importing countries in the world. Australia, USA, and New Zealand provide the majority of beef they import. The objective of this study is to evaluate the price relationship of Korean cattle and corn, prices of the imported beef and corn, and prices of Korean cattle and imported beef. We examine threshold points using threshold vector autoregressive (TVAR) model by assuming the presence of nonlinearity. The potential for exposure to novel or foreign diseases alone can deter travelers from selecting high-risk locations for disease transmission. The 2015–2016 Zika Virus (ZIKV) outbreak in the Americas and Caribbean prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Retailing is an important sector of our state’s economy and is watched carefully as an indicator of overall economic performance. This retailing activity, however, is not evenly distributed across different town/ city size classes. Large cities and towns serve as retail centers for larger geographic areas as well as for some nearby small towns. In other words, small trade centers experience trade leakage relative to their population and large centers experience retail gain relative to their population. Relative retail activity can be measured and hence compared using Pull Factor (PF) as a metric.

This study reports the findings for an analysis using the computer program NAADSM (North American Animal Disease Spread Model) and a supply-driven social accounting matrix to examine the impact of a hypothetical foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in a relatively isolated part of the United States, Utah, under various levels of livestock traceability. The analysis demonstrates that a significant regional economic impact in Utah would result from an FMD outbreak but that improved levels of traceability would be very important in helping to reduce the negative economic consequences of the outbreak.

This study is an assessment of the vulnerability of households to food insecurity under an extreme weather event. A subjective-qualitative technique primarily based on the perceived food security status of the households and their food insecurity coping strategies was used to examine household food vulnerability. Key findings reveal that households living in the vulnerable areas of Sta. Cruz subwatershed were generally resilient to extreme weather events and only suffered from slight to moderate form of food security problems. This paper investigates the relationship between retail and wholesale prices of milkfish (Chanoschanos), tilapia (Tilapianilotica), and tiger prawn (Peneaus monodon) using techniques that recognize the role of seasonal factors for testing orders of integration of and the existence of cointegration between these prices. This paper finds that seasonality plays an important role in explaining movements in the prices of these farmed species. This is so because, with the exception of the wholesale price of tiger prawn, unit roots occur at all frequencies for all of the prices that were examined. Climate-sensitive livelihoods are in the frontline of sectors which will be affected most by climate change. Without proper intervention, smallholder farmers would suffer from declining crop production, yield, and on-farm income, among others. Hence, this study aims to assess the social vulnerability of farming households residing in northern part of Puerto Princesa City, Philippines. Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (SLF) was used in developing separate social vulnerability indices for drought, typhoon, and early onset of rains.
