Humane economics, democratic economic participation, and democratic economic control are words not often combined and terms rarely used by traditional economic developers and urban planners, especially when addressing inner-city redevelopment. Most often, discussions about economic development and the elimination of poverty focus on job creation, workforce development, and access to job opportunities - promoting the corporate model of growth and fortifying big business's penetration into and control of community economics. Downtown planning since World War II has been based on constantly changing assumptions about the nature of central business districts. From 1945 to 1955, downtown was seen as the city's unitary center, and the focus of planning activity was the improvement of downtown access and circulation. Between 1955 and 1965, downtown became a declining activity center and failing real estate market; planners and business groups fought decline and competition from the suburbs through programs like urban renewal. Conflicts And Politics In Urban Planning In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla

This paper tries to discuss two important issues. First, it examines the conflict between ideology and actual urban planning in Tanzania. It is argued that via the Arusha-Declaration,Tanzania showed the intention of building an egalitarian society based on the principles of Ujamaa (socialism), hence one expected that an attempt to transform some colonial structures in order to suit the socialist aspiring nation could be in the agenda in Tanzania. The Politics Of Planning For Urban Redevelopment: Strategies In The Manipulation Of Public Law, Sheldon J. Plager, Joel F. Handler

In this article Professors Plager and Handler examine the influence of legal process upon decision making in municipal redevelopment. Their thesis is that public acceptance of a redevelopment venture depends primarily on the command of political and planning skills and occurs despite rather than because of legal procedures designed to accommodate principles of democracy. Partly through the method of a case study of recent data collected from one municipality, partly by comparative analysis with other studies, they conclude that the reality of decision making in the region they explore is the predominance of informal power over formal, democratic, legal decision-making …
