A fundamental policy choice in economic development among local policy makers is the appropriate mix of “outside” strategies that use incentives to attract companies, and “inside” strategies that invest in smaller and local businesses. Using a mixed-methods research design, including national and state surveys along with qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with policy elites, I examine the role of ideology, elites, community, competition, social capital (trust and influence), and electoral politics in these policy decisions. The household registration system (hukou system) in China has hampered rural-urban migration by posing large migration friction. The system has been gradually relaxed in the past few decades, but the reforms have been differential in city size. We find a striking contrast in migration patterns between years 2005 and 2015; rural people tended to move more to large cities in 2005, but more to small- and medium-sized cities in 2015. We calibrate a spatial quantitative model to the world economy in both years with China divided into rural, mega-city, and other-city regions. This study aims to analyze the relationship between education expenditure and teacher quality on education quality at the senior secondary level in Indonesia. Based on data analysis across provinces using the Fixed Effect Method, an inverted U-shaped relationship was identified between education expenditure and education quality. This study also shows that teacher quality has a significant effect in improving education quality. The interregional analysis shows that education expenditure has an inverted U-shaped relationship and teacher quality has a positive relationship with education quality at the outside Java-Bali region. This thesis assesses how Tulsa, Oklahoma grew to utilize tax increment financing (TIF) to produce economic activity in Tulsa’s historic downtown area. Specifically, how the creation, history, and maintenance of ONEOK Field, a $60 million, 6,000-seat sports venue in Tulsa’s historically African American neighborhood became the catalyst for Tulsa’s current TIF policy. The implementation of National Health Insurance (NHIS; or Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional/JKN)’s policy, increasing patient access to medicine while keeping its budget under tight control, has the potentiality to result in compromising the safety and efficacy of the medicine. Budget constraint and the existing asymmetry information in terms of quality and price of medicines could lead to a moral hazard situation where pharmaceutical companies may produce substandard and falsified medicines to secure their profit. This study try to measure the size of the provincial-level underground economy in Indonesia using a monetary approach. Measurements were made in the study period 2007 - 2017, using Ordinary Least Square regression, to estimate the currency demand due to underground economy activities at the regional level that are affected by regional tax burdens. Estimates in this study resulted in the amount of underground economy ranging from 3.8% - 11.6% of the GRDP with an average of 8% per province per year.

Looking For Better: A History Of Black Southern Migrations, Selena Sanderfer Doss

A broad overview of migrations affecting black southerners is presented, including the Atlantic slave trade, the domestic slave trade, colonization movements to Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Exoduster movement, the Great Migration, and the Return South migration. Emigrants convey their experiences and motivations through testimonies and personal accounts. Surviving the trauma of forced migrations, black southerners organized numerous migration movements both outside and within American polities in search of better opportunities. In the late 20th century, black southerners also initiated a return migration to the American South and have since achieved notable socioeconomic and political progress.

This paper examines the recent history of urban planning policy in and around Portland, Oregon with respect to efforts to enhance local agriculture. Despite recent and ongoing efforts to promote distribution and direct sale of local food products in the city, I argue that the dominant effect of the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) in place since the 1970s has been to push agricultural production further from the most populous areas of the city. Whereas the UGB at present cannot include areas zoned specifically for agricultural use, I argue that it must reformed to allow for "agricultural reserves" within the boundary. …

Accordingly, many states introduced and enacted their own legislation to encourage physical activity in schools. Few studies have explored the effectiveness of the new legislation, however, especially at the state level. This study examines the effect of the implementation of Kredit Pemilikan Rumah Fasilitas Likuiditas Pembiayaan Perumahan (KPR-FLPP) as subsidized mortgage on the recent migration rate and its impact for low-income households in Indonesia. Using the multiple linear regression method random effect model, this study analyzed the home ownership status of recent migrants with indicators of the average household’s per capita expenditure in the 2010-2019 Statistics Indonesia survey. Green spaces, or public parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields, are a community hub. Many studies have highlighted the benefits of green space on surrounding neighborhoods. However, comparatively little research has assessed the relationship between park proximity and housing sales price. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, city officials have shown a renewed interest in increasing park access and quality, although no economic literature has examined role of green space in the housing consumption decision in the city.
