The National Football League is heading into its fourth week and I haven't mentioned it yet. This is because Pete Roselle is no longer the Commissioner, and as a result the League has lost some of its majesty. Roselle always had the appearance and bearing of a deity, and this radiated to the League itself. With Pete gone, the NFL looks like just another bunch of mortals making big bucks off the boredom of the populace and the sweat of gladiators. The piety is no longer there.

The vote was 27-1 with only the Texas Rangers against the proposal. And so next season, if the players agree, there will be three divisions in each league in baseball. Realignment will have been achieved, and there will be another round of playoffs. Player approval is likely, as it was the Player's Association who suggested that it was time for realignment, rather than a second tier of playoffs involving second place teams.

Last Saturday you could hear the chant that goes with the tomahawk chop on two networks, and if you were quick with the remote control you could even get them into sequence. The Atlanta Braves were on CBS, while over on ABC the Florida State Seminoles were putting on a clinic for Kansas to open the college football season. As always, Keith Jackson was there with his now familiar, nearly anesthetizing, call of the game. College football and Keith Jackson are nearly one.

Determinants Of Elite Athletes' Commitment To Sport: Examination Of The Sport Commitment Model In The Professional Sport Domain, Tammy Kay Hall

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the applicability of the Sport Commitment Model for a group of elite, professional athletes. The model proposes that an athlete's commitment will increase as sport enjoyment, personal investments, social constraints, and involvement opportunities increase and will decrease with an increase in involvement opportunities. The influence of identification as an athlete, a determinant of commitment not included in the original model, was also examined. One hundred and eighty three professional football players from the Canadian Football League (CFL) (n = 121) and National Football League (NFL) (n = 69) participated in the study. The President of Florida State University, Dr. Dale Lick resigned last week after controversy surrounding his candidacy for the presidency of Michigan State University. That controversy stemmed from comments he had once made concerning the Black Athlete, in which he said that Black athletes were naturally superior to whites, as they were able to jump higher than whites, citing the evidence of basketball performance to demonstrate his point.

The interest of the media was not directed at the president of the university, or the unveiling of some new piece of technology or super computer, but rather it was media day for Big Orange football. Just over a week ago The Orlando Sentinel ran a series of three articles dealing with the issue of gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. For those not intimately involved with college athletics this is the hot topic currently rattling across campuses nationwide. Football coaches quake at the prospect of reduced scholarships and budgets, and curse the "extremists" from the women's movement who are threatening their opulent empires.

In addition to Reggie Jackson's entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame last weekend, the National Football League Hall of Fame had its induction ceremonies at Canton, Ohio, on Saturday. Five new members were inducted: Walter Payton, Dan Fouts, Larry Little, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll. By any measure an impressive group.

The Acute Effect Of Aerobic Exercise On Anxiety Levels, Toni Devolder

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study sought to determine whether or not state anxiety levels were significantly reduced when individuals participated in aerobic dance workouts of 15 minutes and 30 minutes. Undergraduate university students and faculty enrolled in an aerobic dance class were volunteers in this study. As hypothesized, subjects in the aerobic dance classes did reduce anxiety acutely following both their 15 minute and 30 minute workout as assessed by the STAI (Y-Form State Anxiety). Thus, results indicate that state anxiety may be reduced through aerobic dance with similar situations and individuals. In addition, the study also looked at the posttest state …
