Dynamic Connection Of Mental Health And Sports In College, Terrence Jordan, Mckinley Egland-Young, Kendrick Maynor Jr.
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Throughout universities around the world, every day, the mental health of college students is tested. Specifically, collegiate athletes may feel uncomfortable, or uncertain seeking out resources to assess their overall mental health. There are numerous reasons athletes may be either comfortable or uncomfortable seeking out these resources. Some reasons can include being seen as a sign of weakness, there being no resources for athletes, or they are uncertain about what resources are available to them. The researchers chose to investigate the mental health of two different sports teams at a university. Specifically, the researchers explored these athletes and their mental …
How Covid-19 Restrictions During The 2020-2021 School Year Affected The Mental Health, Physical Health, And Social Health Of The Students At Bowling Green State University, Hannah Davies
Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to survey BGSU students in the Honors College and Athletics Department to obtain their perspective on whether Covid-19 restrictions during the 2020-2021 school year affected their mental health, physical health, and social health. The study was performed in an effort to allow people to consider whether Covid-19 protocols influenced the mental and physical well-being of students. If that was the case, was there a difference between the student-athletes and the non-athlete students.
The Athletic Body: Eating Disorders In Canadian Sport History, Kimberly Callander
The Athletic Body: Eating Disorders In Canadian Sport History, Kimberly Callander
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Eating disorders in Canadian sport are and have been an ongoing issue for some time. In recent years, more research and education programs directed at athletes and their peers have been implemented. However, the topic has never been subjected to thorough historical analysis, specifically in Canadian history. The purpose of this research was to gain a complete understanding of sport-related eating disorder development in Canada.
To construct a social history analysis of eating disorders in Canadian sport, the exploration of Canadian policy statements, archived media sources, general history of eating disorders, and autobiographical accounts by Canadian athletes was conducted. The …

Children with an unidentifiable positive role model often have a bad adolescent lifestyle. These children need something to live for instead of just living. However, there are also issues these adolescents have with extracurricular activities (i.e., sports).
Risk Factor Assessment For Acl Injuries In D1 Soccer And Volleyball Athletes, Kaitlyn Guhl, Lindsey Remski
Risk Factor Assessment For Acl Injuries In D1 Soccer And Volleyball Athletes, Kaitlyn Guhl, Lindsey Remski
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Introduction: Research has shown that non-contact ACL injuries are very common for female athletes involved in level I/II sports, specifically soccer and volleyball players. Injury prevention programs have been developed but still remain largely generalized to meet the needs of all athletes. Different sports place unique demands on their athletes which may lead them to develop different risk factors for injury. In order to develop the most effective injury prevention across different sports, we must first understand differences in biomechanics related to ACL injury risk between athletes specializing in different sports. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to determine …

The Fear of Reinjury and Motivational Influences Contributing to an Athlete’s Return to Sport
Recovery from injury can be a difficult and lengthy process both physically and psychologically. Research that exists on the subject on injury recovery and return to sport mainly focuses on the importance of physical recovery, while discounting the psychological side. Fear of reinjury and motivation are two psychological concepts that contribute to an injured athlete’s decision of whether or not to return to sport. These factors are prominent during the recovery phase, up until and including a return to athletic competition. Self-determination theory provides …

Media itself has always been an outlet for the public. It has been used for entertainment, information, and a societal tool from the time when it was first advancing. Sport media is a genre all its own. There has always been a gender divide in sport and sport media. For this critical study, print media sources from different outlets were analyzed to compare two female athletes against two male athletes. The athletes being compared were Serena Williams and John McEnroe, as well as Brandi Chastain and Nicolas Anelka. Each article was analyzed for how the journalist portrayed the athlete, in …

How Competing With Male Athletes Affects The Way Female Athletes Perceive Their Worth As An Athlete, Cierra Brown
Student Scholar Showcase
This research aims to discover what female athletes thought about playing with male athletes and how that may affect their perceptions on themselves. To figure out the different perspectives on the subject, articles were utilized in the study and female athletes on a liberal arts college campus in Central Virginia as well. Some of these articles include, Mixed-team Sports: Why Gender Doesn’t Matter and Why Co-Ed Sports Leagues Are Never Really Co-Ed . For the research it was important to formulate a survey for a women’s basketball team, women’s soccer team, and women’s lacrosse team at a liberal arts college …
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
Estimating Variations In Metabolic Cost Within The Stride Cycle During Level And Uphill Walking, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Indirect calorimetry provides the average cost of a stride cycle and prevents from identifying which part of the gait cycle causes increased metabolic cost in patients, however, recent simulation methods allow estimating the time profile of metabolic cost within the stride cycle. In this study, we compare the estimations of the time profile of the metabolic cost of two simulation methods for level and uphill walking. We used kinematic, kinetic and electromyography data from level and uphill walking (one participant) to estimate the time profiles of metabolic cost using the muscle-level metabolic model of Umberger using electromyography and kinematic data …

Boom & Bust: The Perils Of Guaranteed Long Term Contracts. Evidence From Ops100 Performance Over The Contract Cycle, Heather M. O'Neill
Business and Economics Faculty Publications
This study focuses on panel data of 256 MLB free agent hitters under the 2006-2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to demonstrate that hitters, on average, increase their offensive production, measured by OPS100, during the last year of their contract and subsequently underperform the first year of the newly signed long term contract. The contract year phenomenon arises from the incentive to land a lucrative guaranteed contract for players not intending to retire. Signing a long term guaranteed contract creates an incentive to shirk (underperform) the first year of the new contract because performance and pay become unlinked and the need …

Do Mlb Hitters Boost Performance In Their Contract Year?, Heather M. O'Neill
Business and Economics Faculty Publications
This study focuses on 256 MLB free agent hitters playing under the 2006-2011 CBA to determine whether they boost their offensive performance in their contract year. Prior studies’ results are mixed, depending on the econometric technique used and the choice of the offensive performance measure.
Having multiple year observations per player, one can incorporate the unobserved traits of the players (ability, risk aversion, work ethic, etc.) by using Fixed Effects (FE) estimation. Since these unmeasured player traits are likely to be correlated with observed predictors of performance (games played, playoff contention, age, etc.), traditionally used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and …

The authors investigated the use of proactive pessimism among college basketball fans. Rather than assess evaluations of an upcoming season as with previous work on proactive pessimism among fans, Grieve and Wann examined evaluations of a specific game.
