The first football game of the college season took place on Thursday night and there are a number of other games this weekend. Many colleges and universities are not yet in session and some players will play as many as four or five games before they see the inside of a college classroom. The Impact Of The Program For Athletic Coaches Education (Pace) Certification –Mivca Coaching Association, Heather L. Sawyer

This study identified the level of awareness, and perceived usefulness of the Program for Athletic Coach (PACE) by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) (n=296). The study further examined: (1) the extent MIVCA coaches are engaged in PACE; (2) the relative importance of content delivered; (3) the important content to improve coaching; and (4) what the MIVCA coaches believed their personal investment should be in a coaching education program.

The participants were asked to complete a survey that ranked the importance of the domains and standards found in the National Standards for Athletic Coaches (NSAC). Results indicate a relatively …

This study is an investigation of European football fans, known as hooligans. For this research, I went to the European Football Championships in the summer of 2000. During a two-month field research project, I observed the soccer games and the many fans who gathered for the tournament. In the course of the research, I spoke with several individuals and explored the existing literature in the sociology of sport. Once again the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has issued a call for reform. As was the case with the Jeremiad Sermons of the 17th Century Puritans, the call for reform has become a ritual whose primary function is to cleanse the sinner so that they might go forth and sin again. Any real prospect of reform and change is as remote in intercollegiate athletics today as it was for the debauched sinners in the Massachusetts of the Mathers. Or as they used to say in rural America, the horse has long since left the barn.

Thanks to the popularity of Tiger Woods and other prominent professional golfers with diverse ethnicities and backgrounds, golf has gained a new patina of inclusivity. As a result, corporate golf outings have become more popular than ever before. For non-golfers, this may feel like it means more opportunities to be excluded from an elitist activity. For planners of corporate activities, it can mean a greater challenge to build inclusion into the equation. This article offers a middle-ground perspective on the ins and outs of golf outings.

If you are like most casual golf watchers you couldn't name the winner, but you knew that Tiger Woods did not win. My guess is that you could not name either of the players who were in the Monday playoff. And furthermore, like much of the rest of America, you did not watch the final round of the tournament on Sunday, nor the Monday playoff.

Whenever I went off to see the Solar Bears of the International Hockey League in the O-rena, I liked to think of it as "Hockey Night in Orlando." With much fanfare and enthusiasm the Orlando Solar Bears opened play in the IHL six seasons ago. Two weeks ago they won the Turner Cup signifying the championship of the IHL. A few days later the IHL was out of business, and then two days ago the Solar Bears announced their exit from the scene.

When this article was written, Tiger Woods had just won his fourth straight major golf championship and golf was experiencing unprecedented levels of interest and participation among African Americans, Asians, women, and young people. At the same time, playing golf was widely perceived as one of the non-performance-related routes to success in many organizations, a route available most readily to white men of some means and less readily to everyone else. This article identifies the illusion of inclusion stimulated by the emergence of Tiger Woods and steps golfers and non-golfers can take to make golf culture less damagingly exclusive.

Brendon Lemon, editor of Out magazine let it be known that he has been involved in an affair with a major league baseball player, and that he just might reveal the identity of that player. Dynamic Characterization Of Aluminum Softball Bats, Danny V. Lee

On January 1, 2000, the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) imposed maximum bat performance limitations on commercial softball bats. The ASA adopted a testing standard defined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) to determine the bat performance factor (BPF), a normalized coefficient of restitution that must be less than 1.2 for the bat to be eligible for ASA sanctioned events.

The ASTM standard requires that the softball strike the bat, which is free to rotate in the horizontal plane, at 26.8 mfs ± 0.3 mfs (88 ftfs ± 1 ftfs) with little or no spin. The …

When I returned from the O-rena and the Magic NBA Playoff game last night I had a headache. Maybe it was a bad Pepsi, maybe the pounding the Bucks put on the Magic, or maybe it was the decibel levels of noise that once again assaulted my very being. I'm not talking about the screaming of the fans, but about the loud thumping music, the pounding of the bass, and the inane booming "voice of banality" that is the arena announcer.
