We measured blood erythropoietin (EPO) concentration, arterial O2 saturation (SaO2), and urine PO2 in 48 subjects (32 men and 16 women) at sea level and after 6 and 24 h at simulated altitudes of 1,780, 2,085, 2,454, and 2,800 m. Renal blood flow (Doppler) and Hb were determined at sea level and after 6 h at each altitude (n = 24) to calculate renal O2 delivery. EPO increased significantly after 6 h at all altitudes and continued to increase after 24 h at 2,454 and 2,800 m, although not at 1,780 or 2,085 m. The increase in EPO varied markedly …

Orthostatic tolerance is reduced in the heat-stressed human. The purpose of this project was to identify whether skin-surface cooling improves orthostatic tolerance. Nine subjects were exposed to 10 min of 60° head-up tilting in each of four conditions: normothermia (NT-tilt), heat stress (HT-tilt), normothermia plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (NT-tiltcool), and heat stress plus skin-surface cooling 1 min before and throughout tilting (HT-tiltcool). Heating and cooling were accomplished by perfusing 46 and 15°C water, respectively, though a tube-lined suit worn by each subject. During HT-tilt, four of nine subjects developed presyncopal symptoms resulting in the termination …

To date there has been limited research addressing the psychosocial consequences of poor coordination in Australian adolescent boys. The implications of failing to meet the expected physical standards of their peers, teachers and parents, can result in low self-esteem and subsequent withdrawal from participation (Lintunen, 1995). According to Harter's (1981) Theory of Competence Motivation, low motor competence is likely to lead to low self-perceptions in the athletic domain. Research with children (Rose, Larkin & Berger, 1997) has demonstrated that poor coordination is more pervasive, influencing many aspects of children's self-esteem. Nepotism is a dirty little word: Related individuals work together in entertainment, medicine, education and yes, even sports administration. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. "Nepotism" is an arguably accurate descriptor of arrangements of relatives working together. However, the potential for real as well as asserted preferential treatment is shown to exist. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived coaching behaviors, goal orientation, and motivation among female collegiate athletes. Female athletes from Eastern Illinois University (n = 66) and Valparaiso University (n = 25), took part in the study. Specifically, the purposes of the study were; a) to examine if athletes who perceived their coaches to exhibit more democratic behavior, praise and encouragement, and training and instruction behaviors would demonstrate higher levels of intrinsic motivation, and b) to examine if athletes with a positive goal profile (high task/high ego) would have significantly greater motivation levels compared to …

This study explores the national initiative in the practise of sport for all from its inception in Malaysia until the year 2000. Background information of the sport scene in the country including the history of sport in the country and the importance of sport in the national agenda are discussed. The promulgation of the National Sports Policy in 1988 is evidence that the government secs sport playing an important part in Malaysian society. The purpose of this study was to see if the Play With Purpose program will provide the 00-01 Lynn University women's basketball team with necessary tools to increase personal growth, and aide in developing a healthy self-esteem.

To research this subject matter a survey was conducted. The survey was administered to the 2000-2001 Lynn University's Women's Basketball team. Based on race, religion, and socio-economic background it was felt that the team represented a wide spectrum of collegiate athletes.

Mark McGwire has retired. He will be best remembered as the man who broke Roger Maris' single season home run record. He will be remembered in tandem with Sammy Sosa for that wonderful season of 1998 when the two of them chased Roger Maris across the sands of time and then both caught him. He will be remembered for the wonderful scene as he broke Maris' record. He will be remembered as one of the "Bash Brothers" who, along with Jose Canseco, redefined the term "long ball" and became a "murderer's row" of two.

On Sport and Society

Now back in the country among My Fellow Americans, but still wandering the highways and byways, I watch with some interest the spectacle of the baseball playoffs and the World Series in the new Post-9/11 World. I am struck by the intensity of the patriotic pageantry prior to each game. The often beautiful and moving singing of the National Anthem; the excessive displays of the red, white and blue; President Bush throwing out the first ball at the World Series; all conspire to mark these events as great moments of communal remembrance and/or celebration.
