We have arrived at that moment in mid-summer when baseball takes a break for the All-Star Game. I read the other day that Wednesday will be the only day of the year in which there is not a major professional sporting event taking place in the United States. That is a fact worth some thought and contemplation and may lead to some conclusions about overkill and saturation. Rather than that, I would like to make a few observations about the current baseball season which I have found to be strange and maybe even portentous.

It was a magnificent tennis match. Two evenly matched players, who admired each other’s game, competed as they had done many times before. It turned out to be the best tennis match that each had ever played against the other, and it was on the Centre Court of the All England Club for the Championship at Wimbledon.

Yesterday the long and courageous struggle of Jules Tygiel ended. For the last several years Jules has been battling cancer with considerable success against high odds. In the past several weeks the options for treatment began to close down, and from his last health update two weeks ago it was clear that the battle was coming to its tragic conclusion.

Effectiveness Of Improving Performance With The Bigger Faster Stronger In-Season Training Program, Alicia D. Crelinsten

This study investigated the effectiveness of improving performance of adolescents with the in-season Bigger Faster Stronger (BFS) program. Thirty seven high school athletes were divided into three groups; BFS (n=l4 ), traditional weight training (n= l0), and control (n= 13 ). Each participant went through a battery of seven performance pre-tests and post-tests ( estimated 1 ORM incline bench, broad jump, one minute sit-up test, t-test, line drill, 40 yard sprint, 1.5 mile run). Following the pre-testing, the control group continued to participate in their sport. The BFS group participated in the in-season BFS program (30 minute supervised session consisting …

Big Brown's victory at The Preakness yesterday has set the stage for a possible Triple Crown winner. At Belmont Park on June 7, and in the three weeks leading up to it, there will be much excitement and speculation in anticipation of Big Brown's big race. Ten horses have made it to this stage over the past three decades only to fall short at the Belmont Stakes. Nearly all of these ten, and now Big Brown, were felt to have an excellent chance to join the elite group of Triple Crown winners.

I have been trying to remember a time when two players who dominated their sport retired within a day of one another. Two of the most significant people in sport have walked away well before time demanded. In the case of Justine Henin the fact that she is only 25 adds to the surprise, while even with Annika Sorenstam at age 37 it seems as if she is leaving early.

This is always a difficult time of year for me. I am never sure which leaves me with a greater numbness of the brain, the NFL Draft or grading final exams. This is a question that will have to be resolved by greater minds than mine, particularly in my current mental state.

An Analysis Of The Ideologies, Strategies And Applications Of Chess And Martial Arts With Respect To Transferable Skills, Torriente Toliver

McCabe Thesis Collection

Chess and martial arts are used to show how to transfer learned skills. Transferable skill is the process by which one uses a learned skill in a different situation. The artifact explains different ways to transfer skills to promote critical thinking. The artifact also shows how to apply the results of attempting to transfer skills to the original skill to enhance understanding of said skill. The artifact defines and describes multiple aspects of chess and martial arts such as tactics, strategy, and thinking. Critical thinking, not results, is the objective of the research.

Under contemporary conditions of globalization, suppression of civil liberties, domination of ethnic minorities, and unholy alliances with resource-rich dictatorships are no longer plausible requisites of this model—if they ever were. The broadening and deepening of economic globalization towards a more sustainable complex of political influence involves “soft power,” including international reputation and norms. Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Performance on the Sternberg working memory task, and MEG cortical response on a variation of the Sternberg task were examined in middle-aged carriers and non-carriers of the APOE ε4 allele. Physical activity was also assessed to examine whether exercise level modifies the relationship between APOE genotype and neurocognitive function. Regression revealed that high physical activity was associated with faster RT in the six- and eight-letter conditions of the Sternberg in ε4 carriers, but not in the non-carriers after controlling for age, gender, and education (N = 54). Furthermore, the MEG analysis revealed that sedentary ε4 carriers exhibited lower right temporal …

“China’s Olympic Delusion” is a great piece which gestures to the ironies and/or contradictions of political systems in bed with imperialist-capitalism as we know it at this time: the tensions between a dominant idea that liberal democracy is the best political system to pay attention to and address human rights, and capitalism with no limits, can go hand-in-hand. This is merely the delusion, and also the fantasy, that keeps “us” (i.e., citizens, intellectuals etc) put, and from thinking critically.

According to Jeffrey Wasserstrom’s article, if the Chinese think they can censor the Olympics, and the political showcasing that will almost certainly accompany them, they are sorely mistaken. I am persuaded by the thrust of this argument. I just hope that as China vies for global leadership and influence, whatever truths the Olympic spotlight reveals about its potential in this regard are more farcical than tragic.
