The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was the first, and to date, the only women’s professional baseball league in United States history. Yet many people are unaware of the league’s existence. The purposes of this paper are to (1) review the historical and research literature on the AAGPBL, (2) examine the reflections on gender issues within this literature, and (3) discuss how these issues contributed to the success and failure of the AAGPBL. The Civilizing And Sportization Of Gaelic Football In Ireland: 1884–2009, John Connolly, Paddy Dolan

Over the course of the last 125 years the sport of Gaelic football in Ireland has undergone a sportization and civilizing process as the rules governing the sport became stricter and players developed greater levels of self-control. However, the civilizing of Gaelic football was a particularly fragile and uneven process. The growing social desire to diminish displays of violence was moderated by ambivalence towards violence. Gradually the external social controls on players increased and, greater and more stable levels of internalization occurred reflected by more advanced levels of player self-restraint in the control of violence. The female athlete has today became an accepted part of sports in elementary school, junior high, senior high, and college. This chapter covers various aspects of the prepubertal and pubertal female athlete. An historical perspective will be presented and selected comments provided on psychological and physiologic aspects of the female athlete. Concepts of adolescent gynecology are reviewed, including breast concerns and menstrual dilemmas in relation to sports activity. Exercise during pregnancy is also considered. This is an artificial series created by culling Athletic Committee records from the President's Office files. It consists of meeting minutes, correspondence and reports. The early meeting minutes are incomplete through 1950. Topics routinely discussed were athletic schedules, awards, varsity standing of sports and compliance with conference and NCAA policies. Ohio Valley Conference meeting minutes and summaries of NCAA meetings are generally included.

Seeking to understand the relationship between Title IX and its impact on a select group of its contemporary beneficiaries, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of Title IX on the personal and professional biographies of 8 early career female club volleyball coaches. This study utilized a modified case study design featuring constant comparison data analysis. Data were collected using a qualitative interview technique with each of the candidate’s interviews subdivided into four distinct sections.
