This paper compares and contrasts the management systems and governance structures of two island sites with national and international World Heritage recognition: Lord Howe Island (off the mid-east coast of Australia) and Fernando de Noronha (off the north-east coast of Brazil). Using historical and contemporary references, the paper explores the manner in which two distinct approaches to governance are implicated in the daily living of community members, and considers their socioeconomic activities. This article is based on ethnographic research conducted in the USA with migrants who use an act of relocation as a means of deliberately constructing identity as well as seeking greater ‘balance’ and ‘control’ in their lives. Specifically, it examines how ‘second’ homes can serve as a transitional or ‘potential space’ in the lives of these migrants not only between different geographic places but also what are taken to be distinct identities and ideals associated with these places and the lives lived in them. This paper examines the reliability and efficacy of hotel guest e-mail questionnaire compared to the paper questionnaire in the Asian Pacific context. Conducted inPerth,SingaporeandPenang, cities with mature hospitality and tourism industries and a representation of chain and independent deluxe hotels, this exploratory qualitative study examines hotelier views of e-mail guest communication derived from content analysis of guest questionnaires format and content and in-depth interviews with senior hoteliers. The findings indicated that e-questionnaires manifested as e-mails, as a direct replacement of the paper questionnaire, appear to be premature given divergent hotelier views and shortcomings in e-mail response administration. Wine tourism is experiencing significant development in both new and old European wine regions. In the case of the Canary Islands, wine has been produced and traded for centuries; however, little is known about the current state or potential for wine tourism development in this archipelago, despite the fact that millions of tourists, including many potential wine tourists, visit the islands each year. In this exploratory study, the perspectives of winery owners and managers on wine tourism are examined. Tourism to the Canary Islands is centered around competitively priced holidays focused on the sun and beach mass tourism experience. A restructure of the islands’ wine industry offers opportunities for developing new tourism alternatives based on gourmet products and traditional landscapes. This paper examines the potential of wine tourism from winery operators’ perspectives. Challenges to overcome in the development of a successful sustainable local wine tourism industry include the need for expansion of the destination image to reflect the region’s wine-making history and scenic qualities; a shift towards independent high-yield travellers; and reintroducing local produce in the mass tourism product. …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of the tasting room for wineries from a re-developing Spanish wine region, and identify the challenges winery owners currently face in their pursuit to market their wines through the tasting room. Design/methodology/approach – Between May and June of 2007 a total of 23 winery owners, managers and wine makers located in the Canary Islands were interviewed from a sample of 61 wineries identified in Tenerife and La Palma islands. Fast ferry catamarans have been in use for several decades. They possess the advantage of overcoming one of the major deficiencies of water transportation: low speed. Although their operation has spread throughout different parts of the world, an overall analysis of the implementation and failures of this technology remains underdeveloped in the transport literature. This paper presents and compares two unsuccessful experiences of the use of fast ferry catamarans in New Zealand and Hawaii. Tourist destination brand image is a major influencing factor in traveler destination choice. This exploratory research into the information sources from which destination brand image evolves, aims to provide insights which may improve destination marketing communication strategies. Indepth interviews with 21 international backpackers on Australia’s northern New South Wales coast indicate that mainstream media played little or no part in the formation of respondents’ image of the coastal destination of Byron Bay. Research findings show word-of-mouth (WOM) and autonomous independent information sources were the key mediums through which respondents formed their image of this iconic Australian tourist destination. Available informatic resources contribute to the archaeological process allowing to have a more detailed register of the evidence and leading to an efficient information management. Digital reconstruction of sites, as developed all over the world, can be helpful to iconographic research, data massification and especially for the preservation of cultural heritage. In this article, a proposal for a virtual reconstruction of Chan Chan in the peruvian North Coast is made. This paper presents a brief summary of the project development, giving the outlines, research phases and the possible contributions and perspectives.

In Peru and in the rest of the world, a great part of the information that helps us to understand the past comes from the story of archaeological practice itself. This article presents some thoughts about how the story of archaeological research in Peru has defined the concept that we have now about Wari and the Middle Horizon, and the impact of this phenomenon in the academic, social, political and cultural spheres.
