This study examines the commodification of emotional relationships in Indonesia through the rise of “rent-a-partner” services on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Existing scholarship on digital intimacy has largely focused on Western and East Asian contexts, particularly dating applications, offering limited insight into how commodified intimacy operates in non-Western settings shaped by distinct socio-cultural and moral frameworks. Addressing this gap, the study draws on Georg Simmel’s concept of reification to analyze how emotional intimacy is transformed into purchasable service packages within platform-mediated environments. This article attempts to describe Simmel’s intellectual thoughts, particularly those related to the mode of human relationship. By applying a systematic literature review, this article demonstrates the uniqueness of Simmelian thought in comparison to other major classical sociological thinkers, like Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. For Simmel, a macro-level analysis on societal culture can be carried out by focusing on the micro dimension of the everyday life. The Post-Secular Society is a project put forward by Habermas as a critique of modern secularism. Habermas envisions this project as a via media—a mediating force between religious fundamentalism and excessive secularism. Defending sovereignty within an island nation is relatively more complex than doing so for a continental state. The number of scattered islands makes straits and seas more penetrable, vulnerable points and targets of asymmetric threats at sea. The aim of this research is to illustrate threats at sea and provide solutions in guarding and monitoring Indonesian coastal borders, which currently require more ships and radar technology as well as other sensing equipment due to longer beaches.
