Strategy For Achieving Maximum Contextualization Of The Church In Contemporary Missions, Jonathan Berry
Strategy For Achieving Maximum Contextualization Of The Church In Contemporary Missions, Jonathan Berry
Honors Theses
"Never in history has there been so much evangelical activity seeking to make Jesus Christ known loved and served throughout the world. Yet the church has never been so harassed and troubled by voices calling for the reduction or elimination of these activities and for the reconceptualization of its message and mission in term of social justice, peace, racial integration and the elimination of poverty. Since there is validity to all of these activities perhaps it can be said that the Spirit is struggling within the church that they might rise to the complex challenge of world-wide mission."

Archbishop John Ireland And The German National Parishes In St. Paul, Daniel F. Detzner
Archbishop John Ireland And The German National Parishes In St. Paul, Daniel F. Detzner
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Archbishop John Ireland dominated the national debate on German language use in parochial schools at the turn of the century. Because of his outspoken desire that Catholics not be viewed as "foreigners" on American soil, Ireland has been portrayed by critics as a rabid Americanizer who was insensitive to the cultural heritage of non-English speaking Catholic immigrants. A review of Ireland's correspondence and papers, interviews with individuals who knew him, and a search of the historical records of six German-Catholic national parishes in St. Paul reveal that Ireland's public statements on Americanization and his archdiocesan policies regarding the German national …

The Social Role Of The Church : Alienation Or Mediation?, John O. Umoh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research has a three-fold purpose: first, to assess the presence, or lack thereof, of alienation in a sample from the rural Farm population; second, to assess the role of the church in helping reduce feelings of alienation; and third, to determine the extent to which church membership and participation enhances personal empowerment and transformative action. The following questions are addressed in the study: 1. Is there evidence of alienation in this rural farm population? 2. If so, who are alienated? 3. Is alienation associated with church membership? 4. Is church membership associated with transformative action? 5. How are alienation …

Towards A Model For The Religious Nurture Of Black Young Adults In Urban Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, Byron Dulan
Towards A Model For The Religious Nurture Of Black Young Adults In Urban Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, Byron Dulan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Black young adults in urban Seventh-day Adventist churches are not only leaving the fellowship of the church in alarming numbers, but those who continue with the church do not seem to be growing in spiritual maturity as might be expected. Written from the historical, sociological, and theological perspective, the thesis endeavors to analyze the dynamics at work in the Black church and among urban Black young adults, with a view toward developing a viable program of religious nurture at the local church level.
Since the 1940's, little has been written regarding religious nurture in Black churches of any Christian denomination …
Of Another World: The Jehovah's Witnesses, William Wesley Zellner
Of Another World: The Jehovah's Witnesses, William Wesley Zellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of Another World is an account of how the Jehovah's Witnesses recruit new members and retain these converts in the face of a skeptical world. The study also attempts to advance a theoretical model toward a generic and generalized account for conversion to a group with a devalued religious perspective. The model, developed by John Lofland in his study of the members of the Unification Church, appears with some modification, to be generalizable to the Jehovah's Witnesses. After modification, the model is still applicable to members of the Unification Church. It is argued that the social characteristics of a group …

The Client-Centered Counselor In The Pastoral Setting, Joseph Roland Armshaw
The Client-Centered Counselor In The Pastoral Setting, Joseph Roland Armshaw
Graduate Theses
A role conflict exists for the priest in the contemporary Catholic church. He must act as an official minister of an authoritarian church in his spiritual role and at the same time as a counselor that meets the needs of his parishioners in his secular role. Therefore, "How authoritarian must he be?" and "How per missive can he be?" It is proposed in this study that the modern Catholic priest can find an answer to this dilemma when he applies Rogers' client-centered counseling theory to his pastoral role. Rogers' theory is based on the dignity, worth, and trustworthiness of the …
Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher
Residency Differentials In Mormon Fertility, Brian Leroy Pitcher
Theses and Dissertations
Although one of the most consistent findings of recent fertility research is the convergence of the religious differentials in fertility, little data have been analyzed to discover the Mormon fertility trends and differentials. This study, based on data obtained on 1,001 Mormon couples, is concerned with describing the effects that the dispersion of Mormon families from the Mormon center in Utah to surrounding areas with various social conditions is having on the fertility of the relocated Mormon families. Data presented clearly show that such families do, on the average, have a lower fertility than do their Mormon contemporaries residing in …
College Students & Religion: An Examination Of Yinger's Non-Doctrinal Religion Questions As "Residual Religion", Paul Mader

The Ministry: An Empirical Analysis Of Roles And Role Discord With Emphasis On Rural-Urban Differentials, Orville R. Cunningham
The Ministry: An Empirical Analysis Of Roles And Role Discord With Emphasis On Rural-Urban Differentials, Orville R. Cunningham
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Ministers occupy a status-position within a social system that carries a well-defined set of cultural expectations about their roles. The membership of the minister’s church, the community at large, and the minister himself formulate ideas and expectations about the function of his roles. Whenever the minister performs his roles in a manner that is contrary to the expectations of the membership of his church or the community the result is a role discord. Role discord also occurs when the minister performs his roles in a way that contradicts his own self-image of his roles. Therefore, this thesis will have as …

A Survey Of The Snake-Handling Cult Of West Virginia, Kenneth Paul Ambrose
A Survey Of The Snake-Handling Cult Of West Virginia, Kenneth Paul Ambrose
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
For over half a century the snake-handling cult has been active in the United States, especially in the Appalachian area. There has been little scientific information published about this cult. The two major works were mainly confined to a single church in Durham, North Carolina, and a single church in Scrabble Creek, West Virginia. This investigator studied four churches in West Virginia, and one in Durham, North Carolina, for two and a half years to gain a deeper understanding of these people and their religious behavior.

A History Of Baptists In Clinton County, Timothy Cantrell
A History Of Baptists In Clinton County, Timothy Cantrell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to present some of the history of the Baptist Church in Clinton County, Kentucky. A detailed study of the early church in the county also presents a picture of the county's social history as well because of the very close association between the individual and his church.
The scope of this study does not lend itself to presentation of the individual histories of all the Baptist churches in the county. It is, rather, the purpose of the author to cover the history of Baptists in the county by tracing the history of their two …

A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall
A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall
OBU Graduate Theses
Recently Dr. Clyde T. Francisco, who is professor of Old Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, suggested that one of the great mysteries of the Bible is contained in the sin and death of Moses. Inquiry into the subject has validated his statement, for the interpretation of Moses' sin and death has been subject to many theories and speculations. The following Biblical passages are concerned with the sin and death of Moses: Numbers 20:1-13; 22-29; 27:12-14; Deuteronomy 1:35-40; 3:23-29; 4:21-24; 32:48-52; 34:1-7. Other related Biblical passages include Psalm 106:32-33, ·Mark 9:2-13 and synoptic parallels including Matthew 17: 1-13 and …

Members of Quaker Meetings may be analyzed according to Weber's traditional or charismatic types. Charismatics show greater commitment and higher education and greater educational mobility. Both charismatics and traditionals show further variation according to the nature of religious career, but the traditional shows inferior commitment regardless of career type.

Characteristics Of Closed Christian Churches In Selected States, 1920-1957, Charles Beecher Barr
Characteristics Of Closed Christian Churches In Selected States, 1920-1957, Charles Beecher Barr
Graduate Thesis Collection
It is not the purpose of this study to find the answer to the question which has often been asked, "Why have so many churches closed?" Finding the answer to this question is possibly an ultimate or underlying purpose, but it is not anticipated that the study will answer the question. Very little study is given to the processes which operate to cause the demise of particular congregations. Attention is rather focused on statistical data which are easily obtainable and the attempt is made to determine which of these are significantly related to the fact of closing.
