Past research shows that Japanese Americans have been successful occupationally, financially and educationally. This thesis examines factors leading to this success. It is generally argued that the greater the congruence between minority and majority value systems, the less likely conflict would be generated in the minority group's acculturation. There appear to be two opposed aspects in the acculturation of the Japanese Americans, relinquishment or retention of traditional Japanese values. Also important is the degree to which Japanese Americans identify themselves as American, or Japanese, or some mixture. Housewives' Self-Esteem And Their Husbands' Success: The Myth Of Vicarious Involvement, Ilene Nagel Bernstein, Anne Statham Macke, George W. Bohrnstedt

This study tests the common assertion that women, especially upper middle-class housewives, vicariously experience their husbands’ success. Our findings for 121 mostly upper middle-class housewives disprove this assertion. Husbands’ success does positively affect a housewife’s self-esteem, but only indirectly, through its effect on perceived marital success. Only husband’s income has a direct positive effect on self-esteem, while other successes of the husband actually lower her self-esteem. These findings, made more dramatic by a comparison with professional married women for whom none of the above effects appear, demonstrate the ambiguous impact traditional marriage has on women. Problem. This study was concerned with the family concept of Seventh-day Adventist parents in Costa Rica. It was expected that an understanding of such concept would provide useful clues for the development of family life education programs sponsored by the Church.

The purpose was to obtain a description of the family concept of Seventh-day Adventist parents in Costa Rica, by determining: (1) their Real Family Concept, its relationships to several selected variable, and its content dimensions; (2) their Ideal Family Concept, its relationships to several selected variable, and its content dimensions.

The effects of rewards and costs on decision-making as perceived by the participants in the premarital dyad, along with the relationship between high personality dominance and competitive behavior, and the attributes of the discussion involving premarital sexual decision-making were studied, using one hundred persons, fifty of whom were solicited from the Central Washington State College student body as being engaged to be married, or involved in a serious relationship which could lead to marriage. The purpose of this investigation is to further improve and re-test the validity of the conceptual model, constructed by Gipson Wells (to be explained in Chapter III) and to increase understanding and knowledge in respect to premarital sexual norms. The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.
