The purpose of this capstone project is to design a program that tends to sociocultural challenges of SUNY Plattsburgh international students and Plattsburgh area community members to improve campus and community relations in order to, ultimately, improve the retention of international students. U.S. higher education institutions depend on the recruitment and retention of international students due to lack of funding at the state and federal levels of government. Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
National Chemistry Week (NCW), an outreach program initiated by the American Chemical Society (ACS), encourages scientists to bring their love of chemistry to the community. The Plutonium Chapter (Purdue University) of Iota Sigma Pi (ISP) organizes an annual celebration of this event in which over 1600 elementary school students are exposed to hands-on experiments related to the annual theme. In 2018, the theme was “Chemistry is Out of This World,” which allowed nearly a 100 volunteers to explore several space-themed experiments with children from three different school districts all over the Greater Lafayette area. Our poster outlines the preparation of …

Also, use of pesticides, fertilizers and genetically modified organisms in food(GM0) has caused attenuation of nutrition, thus giving rise to Food Crisis. To address this concern, Caleb Harper, Principal Research Scientist at MIT shares his vision of “Food Computer” through an initiative called OpenAg, that dwells upon the concept of Controlled Environment for the growth of the plant. The objective of this research is to bring awareness in the young minds – the kids at K12 level to get familiar with current …

Effects Of International Service Learning On Development Of Intercultural Competence, Sharon M. Mccloskey
Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications
As the United States becomes an increasingly multicultural society (Colby & Ortman, 2014; Perez & Hirschman, 2009), there are greater opportunities for cross-culture interactions, especially in settings for healthcare practitioners. The profession of occupational therapy demands future practitioners understand culture and become skilled in the delivery of culturally competent care (AOTA, 2014). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of international service learning (ISL) on the development of intercultural competence in graduate occupational therapy students. Inquiry for this research followed a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design. Study participants were graduate occupational therapy students who engaged in an international …

Host Community Impacts: Learning From The Experience Of Hosting International Volunteers In El Barrial, Suchitoto, Getsemani And San Miguel, El Salvador, Mike Boylan
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Previous exploration of International Experiential Learning (IEL) programs has generally focused on the experience of Northern volunteers, without considering the outcomes in Southern host communities. Contemporary scholars raise serious concerns about potential harm being done in Southern host communities as a result of IEL programs that resemble historical colonialism. This study contributes to the growing body of research that addresses this gap in the understanding of Southern host community experiences. The results tell us that the host community members do not articulate negative experiences in the way that post-colonial scholars predict. The analysis of 23 interviews including host community members, …
