Campuses in India for a long time were exclusive domains of the academia and the community usually featured only in extension activities. But of late the recognition of the importance of experiential learning and drive towards an interdisciplinary approach has brought the focus on networking with the community. Colleges are also keen to promote this endeavor as this also takes care of the social responsibilities of academic institutions.

One such initiative of Women's Christian College, was the local knowledge project which arose out of the Ecoliterature course of the English department. This program documented information about some of the lesser …

It seeks to help the individual to integrate all his activities using his potentials and environmental opportunities. But individual's personality cannot be developed in a day or in one night. If we want to improve personality specially that of a child, a program of personality de velopment must be crafted and implemented.

Therefore, this project has been conceptualized which is anchored on the mission of the university to engage in a social service to the community.

The project is an extension service of the college …

Service-Learning As A Means To Help Social Enterprises, Sin Yan, Joan Wong

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

In Hong Kong, the term "social enterprise" is a relatively new term. As a result, those living in Hong Kong often do not understand the term's meaning or what a social enterprise is and how it works. In fact, many people living in Hong Kong tend to confuse "social enterprises" with "charitable organizations" - thinking that the two terms have the same meaning.

In addition to the many misconceptions about the concept of "social enterprise," it is also important to recognize the difficulties that operating social enterprises (SEs) face in Hong Kong. Many SEs are struggling to survive because of …

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

During the past several years, we have heard several long-time advocates of service-learning integration into teacher education express concerns about how service-learning fits into the mix of pedagogies in the 21st Century school. In this age of hyper-accountability, is service-learning too hard to document and too complicated to implement? Has service-learning’s time passed? Does service-learning fit in the 21st Century school? Why service-learning now?

Today we are faced with unprecedented new challenges in educating our youth: the Internet and other forms of mass media can be a huge impediment to helping out youth become full and able participants in our …

Engagement And Global Learning Through Philanthropy: A Youth Philanthropy Council For International Baccalaureate Students, Erin Gorman

Capstone Collection

Unprecedented global migration and a flattened global economy have influenced the skills, knowledge, and competencies all high school youth need to be engaged participants and effective workers in the 21st century global economy (Mansilla & Jackson, 2011). Research indicates that many youth, especially those at risk for dropping out of school or from minority and low-income backgrounds, do not have adequate opportunities to develop the global competence and 21st century skills needed for engagement and success in the workforce of the 21st century (Afterschool Alliance, 2010). This paper presents a replicable global learning afterschool program model that …

An Examination Of Volunteer Motivations And Characteristics Between Required Volunteer Service And Non-Required Volunteer Service In College Students: An Exploratory Study, Amanda C. Bastien

Honors College Theses

Volunteerism in the undergraduate years can enhance students’ academic development, civic responsibility, and life skills (Astin & Sax, 1998). Whether a student volunteers in high school can be a predictor of continued volunteerism in college and later in life (Planty & Regnier, 2003; Astin & Sax, 1998). Participants of this study were 283 college students enrolled in first year seminar courses at a large university in the Southeastern United States. Participants completed a questionnaire developed by Gage and Thapa (2012) which included the Volunteer Function Inventory (Clary et al. 1998) that served to investigate the volunteering characteristics and volunteering motivations …

This article describes a January term community engagement service-learning course that used the musical and spiritually-based activism of the rock group U2 as an example of engaged spirituality using activism and advocacy. Students were assigned to apply these skills as the service-learning component of the course. These activities were conceptualized as indirect service that reflected …

Interfacing Catholic Social Meanings, Sociology, Self, And Pedagogical Practices, Daniel J. Myers, Andrew J. Weigert

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

What connects Catholic Social Tradition with Sociology? How do each inform the other and how do they, together, flow through and animate the sociologist? Within a student-driven learning community pedagogy, this course builds on the humanistic aspects of Sociology as a scientific perspective a la Peter Berger’s Invitation to Sociology. This foundation is then filtered through a social psychological understanding of self with a sense of vocation through which persons’ deepest passions meets humans’ greatest needs. Biographical vignettes of sociologists’ careers of study that address issues of racial and gender inequalities and psycho-social shifts in values over the life course …

Journey Into Shame: Implications For Justice Pedagogies, Roger C. Bergman Apr 2015

Journey Into Shame: Implications For Justice Pedagogies, Roger C. Bergman

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

Being formed for justice can be a painful experience. Sometimes that pain takes the form of shame and contributes to the formation and exercise of conscience. But shame in other forms can be opposed to human flourishing and social justice. Psychologist James Fowler provides a spectrum of two forms of healthy shame and four forms of unhealthy shame, to which the author adds four other varieties, strategic shame and spiritual shame, at one end of the spectrum, and murderous shame and genocidal shame, at the other. Various experiences of shame are dramatically illustrated in Black Like Me, John Howard …

Speaking of the students, West said, "I would like to see these precious young people commit themselves to lives of integrity, honesty and decency, where they are vigilant against all forms of evil—White supremacists, …
