The Problem Of Declining Enrollment In The Elementary Schools Of Lincoln County, W. F. Kumlien, Howard M. Sauer, C. Scandrette
Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)
During recent years, enrollments in most South Dakota elementary schools have declined at very rapid rate. The prevailing type of rural school district organization in most counties has proved rather ineffective in coping with dwindling enrollments and with the consequent high costs per pupil. It is the purpose of this pamphlet to assist educators, school board members and other Lincoln County leaders, by analyzing the nature of the problem and by presenting suggestions for its solution as they have grown out of the experiences of other South Dakota communities. This study was made possible through the cooperation of the state …

The Farm Labor Situation In South Dakota As Of October 17, 1942, Walter L. Slocum, Gabriel Lundy
Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)
This report is based principally on returns from 1101 farmers located in 28 South Dakota counties. The survey was conducted in an attempt to secure a representative and objective picture of the 1942 farm labor situation, the probable 1943 farm labor situation and the influence of present and probable labor and machinery shortages on farm production plans for 1943. The reports from the 1101 farmers cover only their farms.
Farm Tenure In South Dakota [:] Some Of Its Economic And Sociological Aspects, Alvin E. Coons, Walter L. Slocum
Farm Tenure In South Dakota [:] Some Of Its Economic And Sociological Aspects, Alvin E. Coons, Walter L. Slocum
Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)
Almost without exception county land-use planning committees have listed tenancy among the more important land-use problems in South Dakota. This concern is due to the increase in tenancy, to the growing obstacles in the way of those who wish to become land owners and to some extent to the existence of unsatisfactory relationships between landlord and tenant. Tenancy, however, is only one aspect of the much broader land tenure picture which includes all phases of the control and use of the land. To become a farm owner has long been considered a desirable and legitimate ambition of farm operators, or …

The Emerging Rural Communities Of Beadle County, W. F. Kumlien, Howard M. Sauer, C. Scandrette
Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)
In the period of early settlement in Beadle County the farmer’s contacts 'were largely limited to his immediate neighborhood. He seldom traveled more than three or four miles a distance commonly known as a "team haul.” In recent years, improved transportation facilities have permitted farm families to go to the village for an increasing proportion of their goods and services. As rural folks have extended their radius of interaction, larger village-centered communities have emerged. The Problem Of Population Adjustments In Miner County, W. F. Kumlien, Howard M. Sauer, C. Scandrette
Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)
In order to understand the social interactions of any population group, one must know their nationality background. Differences in work customs, educational traditions, recreational interests, neighborhood persistence, religious beliefs, agricultural practices, thrift and frugality, progressive tendencies, and other activities and attitudes can be partially explained by variations in nationality background. During recent years the following significant changes have occurred in the composition and distribution of population in Miner county: the total population has declined; the proportion in the younger age groups has decreased while the proportion in the older age groups has increased; the sex ratio has become more nearly …

Aurora County, with a total of 80 rural schools, had closed 37.4 percent of those schools by 1940. At this date nine were operating with five or fewer pupils. Operation of schools for ten or fewer pupils is excessively expensive on an instructional cost-per-pupil basis. The project is officially designated as W.P.A. Project No. 665-74-3-143. The authors gratefully acknowledge the cooperation of Lennis J.
