Wiesel's Memoir And God Outside Auschwitz, Mildred L. Culp Jan 1981

Wiesel's Memoir And God Outside Auschwitz, Mildred L. Culp

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Night records Elie Wiesel’s internment at Auschwitz, and it raises questions about God’s and humanity’s respective roles in the death camps. Today’s literary critics and theologians, however, highlight Wiesel's gift for story-telling of his theology and miss the quality of the writer’s individual works. Tending to group all of the author's Holocaust stories to illuminate a particular theme, they have failed to recognize that Wiesel’s theology in Night is manifest only when they perceive "that there is meaning in [it, which] comes only when the elements that go up to make that thing" appear in their relatedness. They do not …

The Roles Of Ethnic Theater In Immigrant Communities In The United States 1850-1930, Maxine S. Seller Jan 1981

The Roles Of Ethnic Theater In Immigrant Communities In The United States 1850-1930, Maxine S. Seller

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries millions of Europeans left their homes to form immigrant communities in the United States. Much of the literature about those immigrant communities focuses upon problems such as their ecomonic [economic] hardships, prejudices against them, and their difficulties adjusting to an unfamiliar environment. It is equally important, however, to study the strengths of these communities, their rich internal life, and the institutions that expressed and sustained that life. One of the most significant and least studied of these institutions was the foreign language, or ethnic, theater.

Critique [Of God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel], Neil Nakadate Jan 1981

Critique [Of God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel], Neil Nakadate

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Among the most important observations made in the course of Joe Rodriquez‘ essay on the Chicano novel are that 1) an ethnic legacy must be recognized described, and acknowledged in its complexity and contradictions before it can become a viable part of an individual's identity; 2) ethnic legacies and affiliations, as with all relationships into which individuals are born, can be burdensome liabilities as well as touchstones of sustenance and liberation; 3) an ethnic's unquestioning affiliation with the "group" often leads to a diminishment of personal worth. With his focus on dialectical forces within Chicano life and on ethnicity as …

Critique [Of Addressing Gaps In The Delivery Of Community Services: The Case Of One Inner-City Community], Shirla Mcclain

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

This study has two major implications for human service professionals. First, it identifies some of the essential ingredients that enable human service agencies to be effective. Second, it provides a basis for further research possibilities among the human service professions.

Addressing Gaps In The Delivery Of Community Services: The Case Of One Inner-City Community, Cecilia E. Dawkins Jan 1981

Addressing Gaps In The Delivery Of Community Services: The Case Of One Inner-City Community, Cecilia E. Dawkins

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The need for more effective approaches to the delivery of health and social services in inner-city communities is well established. Attempts to improve service delivery in such areas as housing, health care and job training usually concentrate on strengthening' community education efforts and other strategies designed to motivate potential users of community services. Little emphasis has been placed on increasing the communication between different community service providers to achieve better coordination among organizations responsible for service delivery in inner-city communities. As a consequence, major service gaps exist including such problems as duplication of services, limited accessiblity [accessibility], and the absence …

Critique [Of Addressing Gaps In The Delivery Of Community Services: The Case Of One Inner-City Community], Minnie T. Bailey

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

This descriptive study was completed to assess the demographic characteristics of respondents; the kinds of services provided by twenty-eight social agencies, organizations, and institutions and the perceptions of low-income clients held by providers. The purpose of the survey was to gather baseline data to improve the COALITION‘S ability to coordinate services and planning as well as to avoid duplication of services.

Critique [Of A Proposed Model For Advocacy Services For Mexican Undocumented Aliens With Mental Health Needs], Cliff I. Hooper Sr.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

With the data we have the evidence of need, with the proposed method, we have been offered a logical approach to difficult conditions, but what we need now is a method for overcoming the extraordinary conditions. Salcido's contribution is both an offering and a projection of one of a number of serious Social problems in the United States. As an offering, this paper provides data sustaining the structure and validity of a model; as a projection, Salcido focuses the phenomena of United States/Mexican border relations as that situation concerns United States nationalism and Mexican aliens who are illegal residents, especially …

Critique [Of The Image Of Gays In Chicano Prose Fiction], Laverne Gonzalez Jan 1981

Critique [Of The Image Of Gays In Chicano Prose Fiction], Laverne Gonzalez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The author speaks truly in stating that gays in literature have remained, for the most part, in the closet. Generally authors have been concerned with presenting a given philosophy, advocating social change, creating aesthetically satisfying literature, not primarily with sexuality, per se.

Critique [Of God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel], Gladys David Howell Jan 1981

Critique [Of God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel], Gladys David Howell

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The concepts of society and culture, so vital in the pursuit of understanding human behavior. its patterns and effects, are ultimately expressed in the lives of individuals. Cultural values are carried, symbolized, and integrated in the minds of human beings Innovative individuals challenge and change culture. The crucial intersection of society, culture, and individual has not always been granted sufficiently high priority in social science research to exploit this rich vein. As sociology and anthropology have moved toward quantitative methods, material is often fractured so that society seems peopled by disembodied fragmented men and women. This is regrettable since the …

The Editor Notes, Charles C. Irby

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The issues affecting ethnics, minorities, and the poor have changed little throughout the years; the primary issue, undergirding all others, however, is social Justice and its attainment. We are hopeful that the membership will share with others the celebration of ethnicity provided in this issue of the Journal, for ethnicity is more than an academic concern.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This work consists of over 1,200 entries on German-Americans, compiled and evaluated by librarians Michael Keresztesi and Gary R. Cocozzoli. The major objective is “to stimulate interest and facilitate research in German-Americana” (p. xvi) by presenting ”penetrator works, basic treatises, landmark writings, and documents which constitute the best available sources of information on their respective topic areas. . . .” ( p. xv) Only English-language books have been described and assessed in terms of their ”research value and information-yielding capacity.“ (p. xv) Periodical and journal articles were omitted for reasons of space and because of their accessibility through standard abstracts …

[Review Of] Paul Berliner With Kudu, The Sun Rises Late Here, Ricardo Valdes

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In a search for means of communication to open new doors of understanding between our neighbors and ourselves on this planet earth, we occasionally encounter a person or a method which seems to fling those doors open. It is with great enthusiasm that I share one such experience with my colleagues in the NAIES. Last fall I attended a concert by Paul Berliner and Kudu. Paul, a musicologist at the School of Music and Program of African Studies at Northwestern University, revealed in a two-hour program of lecture and performance the heart and suffering, hopes and spirit of Zimbabwe in …

[Review Of] Paul Wrobel. Our Way: Family, Parish And Neighborhood In A Polish-American Community, Phylis Cancilla Martinelli Jan 1980

[Review Of] Paul Wrobel. Our Way: Family, Parish And Neighborhood In A Polish-American Community, Phylis Cancilla Martinelli

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Paul Wrobel’s study of a Polish-American community provides valuable insight into one of America’s largest white ethnic groups. Recent studies of Polish-Americans, such as Neil Sandberg’s Ethnic Identity and Assimilation: the Polish American Community in Los Angeles (New York: Praeger, 1974), have been few and often lacking in insight, even if providing some information. Wrobel provides a window for outsiders to look at St. Thaddeus parish on the northeast side of Detroit, a neighborhood reflecting “the cultural attitudes and values of its residents, especially their need for order and cleanliness.” (p. 46.) He takes care to emphasize that his study …

[Review Of] Jay P. Dolan. The Immigrant Church, New York's Irish And German Catholics, 1815-1865, George R. Gilkey Jan 1980

[Review Of] Jay P. Dolan. The Immigrant Church, New York's Irish And German Catholics, 1815-1865, George R. Gilkey

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Jay Dolan confines this study on immigrant Catholicism in New York City largely to the half-century between 1815 and 1865. He does, however, briefly note significant ties among events occurring in the secular world of Europe and America which influenced the nature of the migrations and the attitudes of the immigrants. (For example, the Germans of ‘48 brought with them political leanings that their predecessors had had). It is important to keep in mind that it was the era following the American Civil War when the great waves of immigrants, including large numbers of Catholics from southern and eastern Europe, …

[Review Of] Jesse Green, Ed. ZuñI: Selected Writings Of Frank Hamilton Cushing, Elmer R. Rusco Jan 1980

[Review Of] Jesse Green, Ed. ZuñI: Selected Writings Of Frank Hamilton Cushing, Elmer R. Rusco

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Jesse Green, a professor of English at Chicago State University, has brought together in this volume, with appropriate explanatory materials, selections from the published and unpublished writings of Frank Hamilton Cushing. The collection deals with several things: autobiographical materials (about 120 pages); description of Zuñi life and beliefs (about 220 pages); and materials about the relation between Zuñi and White America (much of the autobiographical section, a brief description of visits to the East by several Zuñi, most of the brief foreword by anthropologist Fred Eggan, and much of Green’s more than 60 pages of introductions.) The volume is handsomely …

[Review Of] Julian Samora, Joe Bernal, Albert PeñA. Gunpowder Justice: A Reassessment Of The Texas Rangers, Louis Sarabia

Gunpowder Justice: A Reassessment of the Texas Rangers is an undertaking which has long been overdue. However, in this volume by Julian Samora, Joe Bernal, and Albert Peña, the expectations outweigh the realities.

[Review Of] Gerald Vizenor. Wordarrows: Indians And Whites In The New Fur Trade, Marcia J. Galii

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

It was George Orwell who saw, more clearly than most, that “newspeak” was often used by government and public institutions in communicating with their public. He warned that such jargon would separate government from the governed.

Critique [Of Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans], Helen Maclam Jan 1980

Critique [Of Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans], Helen Maclam

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Masayuki Sato's article Concept of Shame and the Mental Health of Pacific Asian Americans serves the vital function of raising issues as the necessary first step in seeking answers. Sato has convincingly related some attributes of Pacific Asian Americans (eg., high scholastic achievement, low utilization of mental health services and underemployment) to the need to avoid shame or "save face."

[Review Of] John U. Ogbu. Minority Education And Caste: The American System In Cross-Cultural Perspective, V. Thomas Samuel Jan 1980

[Review Of] John U. Ogbu. Minority Education And Caste: The American System In Cross-Cultural Perspective, V. Thomas Samuel

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In this comprehensive and well documented study on the minority education in America, Ogbu approaches the question of poor minority performance in school from a different but a powerful crosscultural perspective. His major hypothesis is that lower school performance on the part of blacks is an adaptation to their social and occupational positions in adult life, which do not require high educational qualifications (p. 213). The dominant white caste maintains the adaptation by providing blacks with inferior jobs. The adaptation is also maintained by certain structural and cultural features of the black environment which have evolved under the caste system. …

Racism And The Helping Process, Susan Reid Jan 1980

Racism And The Helping Process, Susan Reid

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The issues addressed in this paper relate to racism within the helping process. We will base our discussion on the premise that racism is an illness and should be regarded as such wherever it emerges in the helping process, whether or not this relates directly to the client's reasons for seeking help. The discussion will also be based on the converse, i.e. that concerns of clients about race relations, their interest in establishing positive interracial relationships or in effecting change on some level, should be regarded as healthy and positive, not as "symptomatic" of hidden pathology.

[Review Of] Judy H. Katz. White Awareness: Handbook For Anti-Racism Training, Helen G. Chapin Jan 1980

[Review Of] Judy H. Katz. White Awareness: Handbook For Anti-Racism Training, Helen G. Chapin

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

White Awareness has been created out of a personal and professional struggle and is designed to help whites understand and come to grips with personal, cultural, and institutional racism. The author was the child of refugees from Hitler’s Germany. She was further influenced by the social movements in the United States during the 1960’s. She has a vision of equality and a commitment to combatting the pathology of racism. Her practical orientation makes her concerned with action rather than self-indulgent or energy-wasting guilt.
