The University’s Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) facilitates the ethical review of all postgraduate research degree and staff research activities at the University. In exceptional circumstances, a taught postgraduate research study beyond a minimal risk level, may be referred to the HREC for full ethical review using the appropriate research ethics application. The HREC may add to, amend, or delete from its terms of reference. All minor changes are subject to approval by the Research & Innovation Committee, with major changes being subject to approval by the Research & Innovation Committee, followed by Academic Council.

Despite unremitting efforts to develop quality criteria of qualitative research, traditional criteria for the trustworthiness of qualitative results are still predominant in interpretive and naturalistic inquiries including Ph.D. studies. This work does not aim to replace the existing quality criteria but rather to update and simplify those criteria to include credibility, confirmability, and representativeness. This article describes a phenomenological study that explored the experiences of early leavers who chose to return to high school in order to pursue their diploma. Eighteen students, including males and females, participated in individual tape recorded interviews, during which they described their experiences, yielding written protocols that were thematically analyzed. Results from this study revealed seven prominent themes that included the following (a) facing reality, (b) launching process, (c) determination, (d) overcoming barriers, (e) supportive influences, (f) proving self, and (g) learning context. Findings and implications for educators and future research are included.
