The Black Lives Matter movement emerged in 2012 to combat racial targeting after the death of Trayvon Martin. I wanted to share my experience as an individual who often intervenes in challenging or dangerous situations who was transformed into a bystander by a familiar situation that occurred in an unfamiliar setting. While my study abroad experience was undoubtedly one of the best moments in my life, it brought a lot of discomfort in the forms of different cultures, settings, peoples, and expectations.

My dance is called Afrobeat. You may ask, what is Afrobeat? Afrobeat is a unique style of dance and popular music embracing elements of African music, jazz, soul, and funk. I used a mixture of African songs that focus on romance, self-love, and acceptance. I ended my dance with a powerful song that talks about always pushing through no matter what the struggles and hard times will be.

This piece is my way of responding to the accusations that a lot of minoritized peoples receive. Too often, they are asked to explain why they are offered an amazing opportunity. They do not owe anyone an explanation as to why they were chosen any more than their white counterparts would. It takes away from the joy of their success and can motivate them to avoid opportunities for success in the future.

I dedicated the poem/prose to them, for they have made a comeback and continue to live their lives as if nothing was holding them back, which is incredibly courageous despite everything they have gone through. My intent was to create something that spoke directly to the people in my community. I think many times, artists who come from obscure places try to follow trends of other major cities and that doesn’t necessarily yield the best results. I decided to create a record that included our own language, spirit and culture. It was one of the few times that the outcome matched my intent and that is very challenging for a songwriter.

Historically, black girls and women has been subjected to high public scrutiny that represents their bodies and hair styles as deviant from a European standard of beauty and respectability. Black women have endured many social pressures that have shaped their hair choices in various ways. I will explore assimilation theories of culture and the construction of dominant ideals of worth and respectability within K-12 settings, to document the ways in which black girls' hairstyles have been stigmatized. I, Too, Am A Woman: An Emancipatory Text On The Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Sexuality, Michelle M. Allen

This inquiry builds upon Black Feminism and Critical Race Feminist frameworks by exploring the juxtaposition between Black Women and Queer Black Women. It is also an exploration of the similarities between Queer Black Women and Black Women and how they interact with femininity and masculinity, patriarchy, and heteronormativity. Claiming digital space through podcasting, it honors the power of counter narratives by employing autoethnographical story telling. It examines the multivalent ways in which critical geographies, safe spaces, and homeplaces nurture or alienate Black Women on the basis of sexual orientation, gender performance, race, and social class.
