While student enrollment has declined in most public and private colleges in Nebraska, the University of Nebraska at Omaha has experienced substantial growth over the past five years. From 1968 to 1972, UNO gained a total of 2,329 students; an annual growth rate of 5.4 percent (see Tables I, II, and III). During this period, the number of full-time students enrolled at UNO increased at an annual rate of 4.0 percent while part-time enrollment increased at an annual rate of 7.1 percent. This report was compiled over a four-month period of time, ending March 1973, and was made possible, in part, by a grant from the YWCA to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Sections of the study include welfare, education, health, employment, jobs, courts, religious organizations and recreation. In each section the focus was on obtaining an average understanding of the scope of activity taking place with special emphasis on facilities and services for girls and women.

The age structure of a population provides a base for assessing present social and economic conditions as well as the starting point for predicting future population trends.

With an overall median age of 32.0 years, Omaha's population in 1950 (the unshaded population pyramid on page 3) had a sizeable proportion of its population of working age, but lacked school-age and young adult population. The four areas for which data were available paralleled the city's profile, with the closest match in the Northeast and Southeast.

Local and regional planners have long recognized the need for detailed information on past, present, and projected occupational needs. Ideally, data on: (I) the number of workers employed, (2) their years of job experience, (3) their years and type of job training, (4) the number of workers to retire in the near future, (5) the number of new workers needed due to expected expansion, and (6) the salary levels of the various occupations for each firm and industry in the local economy should be available to describe occupational patterns. Many types of planning efforts depend on information about the future size and composition of the population. The projections in this report are intended for use in planning. Even under the best of circumstances, however, making projections that accurately indicate future prospects is difficult. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using these or any population projections.

The population projections in this report are the direct product of specific assumptions about future trends infertility, mortality, and migration. These assumptions, in turn, are based on information about past trends in factors which are considered to be the principal determinants of population change. …

This study presents the results of efforts to update the intercity comparisons of state and local taxes on manufacturing firms as reported in a 1972 study entitled "Intercity Comparison of Taxes on lndustry." The intent of this study is to determine the changing tax position of Omaha relative to other cities since 1971. Recommendations for improving the attractiveness of Omaha as a site for industrial location are provided in the final section.

In January of 1972, the staff and resident representatives of the Worcester Model Cities neighborhood contracted the Survey Research Program to work with them to conduct a survey of neighborhood residents. The purpose of the project was to collect data that would assist those in the Model Cities area to systematically measure residents' perceptions and feelings, to identify problems and needs, to plan programs, and, perhaps, at a later date to have a basis against which to measure change.

This study provides an analysis of market conditions for subsidized dwelling on its for a two year period from September 1971 to September 1973. It emerged because of the strong and prevailing belief that there exists today in the Omaha Housing Market Area (HMAl an urgent and unmet need for a large number of safe, decent dwelling units available at prices or rents that low and moderate income families can afford. In spite of the recent emphasis on minority group problems, there are still significant gaps in the store of knowledge about the American Indian in the urban setting. Omaha is not unique. Much empirical data can be found in the census figures, but it must be extracted and synthesized before it becomes meaningful. Even so, the picture of the urban Indian in Omaha is far from complete. Changes in Omaha population from 1960 to 1970 have been more areal than real. While significant spatial changes of population may be noted, the rate of population growth during the decade can only be described as moderate. This is a conclusion from initial output from the U.S. Bureau of the Census' 1970 First Count computer tapes.

The census computer tapes provide population and housing data in more detail and in finer geographic areas than the traditional printed reports. In addition, since they are the medium through which the printed reports are generated, they provide valuable advance data to census users.

This study is an extension and refinement of a previous report on the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) by Perry P. Chang. The present study makes three major changes in Chang's report, in that it obtains output and value added of industries in the Omaha area, exports and imports of the industries, certain income multipliers, forecasts of output in the Omaha area. for 1975 and 1990, and compares the three results with Chang's.

This is the third of a series of continuing studies in the attempt to ascertain Omaha's retail trade area. The method utilized, as in the past, is that of recording license plate prefix numbers at the three major and two minor shopping points within the Omaha SMSA. Emphasis is placed upon the three major shopping points, Downtown, Crossroads and Westroads, for they are the best indicators of the regional focus of Omaha.
