Navigating The Manosphere: An Examination Of The Incel Movements’ Attitudes Of Sexual Aggression And Violence Against Women, Albina Laskovtsov

There is a considerable and established literature on the topic of violence against women. Yet, there remains understudied areas of foci with lesser attention paid to its occurrence within online and digital contexts. Of particular interest is the networked misogyny and sexism of the online group that self-identifies as “involuntary celibates”, or “incels”. Drawing on data collected from online forums and chat rooms, the language and discourse of this particular group are analyzed through an integrated conceptual framework encompassing hegemonic masculinity, aggrieved entitlement, and patriarchy to better understand the prevalence and types of violence promoted by “incels”. Among human rights abuses in modern society, the trafficking of women and children for labor, prostitution, and other forms of sexual exploitation is one of the greatest. While a large amount of time and financial support has gone into efforts to suppress trafficking and shelter its victims, there has not been enough done to tackle this problem. Before reaching the age of 18, it is predicted that 80% of adolescents in the United States will have traded money for sex. This study examines undergraduate students from the University of New Hampshire attitudes towards campus police, specifically how student experience with campus police affects their attitudes toward them. There were a total of 113 respondents from the University of New Hampshire that answered an online survey. The survey looked specifically at the relationship between students' experience and attitudes towards UNH police, hypothesizing that students who had perceived fair encounters with campus police would be more likely to contact them in an emergency and have more positive attitudes toward them . The U.S. population has changed significantly since the 1950s, becoming markedly more racially diverse. Still, a large portion of America’s neighborhoods remain racially segregated – even in large, racially diverse cities, such as Philadelphia (Logan & Stults, 2011). As a result, there is a well-established body of research that has shown that residential segregation consistently produces negative effects for neighborhoods (Massey & Denton, 1993). In response, many scholars and policymakers have suggested that the most promising response to inequality due to segregation is racial residential integration (Denton, 2010; Ellen, 2000; Galster, 1992; Roisman, 2008). In the U.S. the public is persistent in believing in worsening crime trends, despite the fact that the crime rate has been falling since the early 1990s. This dissertation is a comprehensive examination of the measurement, perceived causes, and behavioral consequences of crime trend perceptions. It is composed of three interrelated studies. The first step to understanding crime trend perceptions is to have accurate measurement. The reality is that “criminal justice today is for the most part a system of pleas, not a system of trials,” as Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in Lafler v. Cooper (2012). Despite this heavy reliance on plea bargaining in the U.S. criminal justice system, the nature of plea bargain decisions remains elusive. Starting in the 1980s, the crack cocaine epidemic disproportionately affected African American males. The justice system incarcerated thousands of African American males, often multiple times for selling crack cocaine during their adolescence and adult lives. On release from prison, this population often does not fit well with the environment to which they return, leading to subsequent incarceration. Using the ecological theory as a lens, this study concerns the goodness of fit between African American males incarcerated repeatedly for selling crack cocaine and the home environment within an Upstate New York community after their release. Societal response to crime is a topic at the heart of criminology. In contrast to a vast literature on the hidden social consequences of formal sanctions on individuals, family and communities, few studies have examined the ramifications of a formal sanction on future interactions with the criminal justice system over the individual life course. Applying a cumulative disadvantage (CDA) perspective, my dissertation contributes to the understanding of whether and how a prior punishment affects an individual’s trajectory of future punishments over the life course. The immigrant crime-relationship is one of the most vigorously debated and contentious public policy concerns in present society. The majority of scholarship investigating this link demonstrates that immigrants are no more crime prone than the native-born population, and in fact, may even suppress levels of neighborhood crime. A limitation of this body of scholarship is that it tends focus on immigration, overall, or specifically Latino immigration, failing to account of potentially important between-group differences in offending. วิทยานิพนธ์ “การประกาศรายชื่อบุคคลที่มีพฤติการณ์เกี่ยวข้องกับการก่อการร้ายเป็น “บุคคลที่ถูกกำหนด” ตามพระราชบัญญัติป้องกันและปราบปรามการสนับสนุนทางการเงินแก่การก่อการร้ายและการแพร่ขยายอาวุธที่มีอานุภาพทำลายล้างสูง พ.ศ. 2559 : กรณีศึกษาขบวนการแนวร่วมปฏิวัติแห่งชาติมลายูปัตตานี (Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani หรือ BRN)” ฉบับนี้ มุ่งศึกษาเพื่อวิเคราะห์สถานการณ์การก่อเหตุความไม่สงบในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ ที่นำไปสู่ปรากฏการณ์การก่อการร้ายของขบวนการแนวร่วมปฏิวัติแห่งชาติมลายูปัตตานี (Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani หรือ BRN) รวมถึงวิเคราะห์ผลกระทบตลอดจนแนวทางในการประกาศรายชื่อ BRN ให้เป็นบุคคลที่ถูกกำหนดในลักษณะที่เป็นกลุ่มองค์กร ตามพระราชบัญญัติป้องกันและปราบปรามการสนับสนุนทางการเงินแก่การก่อการร้ายและการแพร่ขยายอาวุธที่มีอานุภาพทำลายล้างสูง พ.ศ. 2559 ผลการศึกษา พบว่า การก่อเหตุความไม่สงบในพื้นที่จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ของขบวนการแนวร่วมปฏิวัติแห่งชาติมลายูปัตตานี (Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani หรือ BRN) คือ การก่อการร้าย ตามประมวลกฎหมายอาญาของไทย ซึ่งมีลักษณะความเป็นองค์กรอาชญากรรม ผลจากการประกาศรายชื่อ BRN ให้เป็นบุคคลที่ถูกกำหนด จะเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นในการนำมาตรการบังคับทางกฎหมายมาใช้กับกลุ่มองค์กรที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการก่อการร้าย อันมีผลให้สถานะของ BRN ถูกรับรองอย่างเป็นทางการโดยองค์กรที่ใช้อำนาจตุลาการ (ศาล) ว่าเป็นกลุ่มก่อการร้ายอันส่งผลต่อการระงับการดำเนินการกับทรัพย์สินของ BRN และข่ายงานผู้เกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์ มิให้มีการทำธุรกรรมด้วยประการใด ๆ หรือนำทรัพย์สินไปใช้ในการก่อการร้าย แต่หากพฤติการณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการก่อการร้ายได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ยังคงมีกลไกในการเพิกถอนรายชื่อออกจากการเป็นบุคคลที่ถูกกำหนดได้ตามกฎหมาย แนวทางในการประกาศรายชื่อ BRN ให้เป็นบุคคลที่ถูกกำหนด เจ้าหน้าที่ผู้สืบสวนสอบสวนจะต้องพิสูจน์ความเชื่อมโยงของสถานการณ์การก่อการร้ายในเหตุการณ์ต่าง ๆ ว่าเป็นการก่ออาชญากรรมโดยกลุ่มบุคคลในองค์กรอาชญากรรมเดียวกัน อันได้แก่ องค์กร BRN โดยพิสูจน์ทราบให้ได้ว่ามีเหตุอันควรสงสัยและมีพยานหลักฐานอันสมควรว่า กลุ่ม BRN มีพฤติการณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการก่อการร้ายหรือการสนับสนุนทางการเงินแก่การก่อการร้าย โดยนำมาตรการทางเลือก ได้แก่ ยุติธรรมเชิงสมานฉันท์, ยุติธรรมชุมชน เข้ามาประกอบการดำเนินการทั้งก่อนและหลังการประกาศรายชื่อกลุ่ม BRN เป็นบุคคลที่ถูกกำหนด เพื่อให้การป้องกันและปราบปรามอาชญากรรมก่อการร้ายของไทยมีประสิทธิภาพมากยิ่งขึ้นและเป็นต้นแบบในการดำเนินการกับองค์กรอาชญากรรมก่อการร้ายอื่นๆ ที่มีรูปแบบเดียวกันกับ BRN ต่อไป

Transformation As Desistance Inside: Temporality And Identity Reconstruction Among Men With Life Sentences, Richard Stover

This thesis is an investigation of destistance strategies among men sentenced to life in prison in a medium security prison in Pennsylvania. Desistance here is defined as the process leading to the cessation of formally deviant behavior. Drawing from life narrative interviews conducted among 22 men, I argue that desistance is intrinsically tied to how inmates conceptualize themselves within the institutional context of the prison and can be expanded to include people who are still incarcerated. I build off of Peggy Giordano and colleagues symbolic interactionist perspective on desistance and expand it to chart how men with life sentences order …

การศึกษาเรื่อง "เหยื่อจากศัลยกรรมความงามและกระบวนการเยียวยาเหยื่อในประเทศไทย" นี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาสถานการณ์การตกเป็นเหยื่ออาชญากรรมเกี่ยวกับศัลยกรรมความงาม 2) ศึกษากระบวนการเยียวยาผู้ตกเป็นเหยื่อการทำศัลยกรรมที่เกิดความผิดพลาด และ 3) ศึกษาแนวทางป้องกันและเยียวยาการตกเป็นเหยื่อศัลยกรรมความงาม งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ทำการศึกษารวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารวิชาการและข่าวที่นำเสนอในปี 2558-2562 ที่ปรากฏในสื่อ เก็บข้อมูลโดยวิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากผู้ที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อจากการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม ซึ่งผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ คือ ผู้ที่ได้รับความเสียหาย ญาติและผู้ใกล้ชิดกับผู้ที่ได้รับความเสียหายจากการศัลยกรรมความงามจากหมอกระเป๋าและคลินิกศัลยกรรมความงาม จำนวน 5 คน รวมทั้งผู้เกี่ยวข้องกับกระบวนการเยียวยาผู้เสียหายจากการทำศัลยกรรมที่มีประสบการณ์ในการทำงานไม่น้อยกว่า 5 ปี รวมทั้งหมด 9 คน ในพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานครและปริมณฑล ผลการศึกษาพบว่า สถานการณ์ความรุนแรงที่ผู้ตกเป็นเหยื่อได้รับผลกระทบที่ปรากฏให้เห็นภายนอกทั้งทางร่างกายและจิตใจตั้งแต่บาดเจ็บเล็กน้อย เสียโฉม พิการและเสียชีวิต อีกทั้งพบว่ารูปแบบการทำศัลยกรรมกับหมอกระเป๋าได้รับความนิยมในกลุ่มสาวประเภทสอง เพราะความต้องการตอบสนองด้านความงาม ต้องการเหมือนผู้หญิง เป็นส่วนสำคัญที่ผลักดันให้ทำศัลยกรรมความงาม ปัจจุบันความนิยมเหล่านี้ขยายวงกว้างในกลุ่มผู้หญิง เกือบทุกช่วงอายุ เนื่องจากอิทธิพลของกระบวนการสร้างอัตลักษณ์โดยใช้สื่อทางสังคม การโฆษณา การรีวิว และการบอกกันแบบปากต่อปาก การเยียวยาผู้ตกเป็นเหยื่อจากการศัลยกรรมความงามพบว่ามีการเยียวยาโดยสังคมผ่านทางสื่อโซเชียลมีเดีย องค์กรต่างๆที่ไม่หวังผลกำไร, การเยียวยาโดยคู่กรณีที่ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายผ่านกระบวนการไกล่เกลี่ย และการบังคับตามคำพิพากษาของศาล ประกอบกับการเยียวยาโดยภาครัฐผ่านพระราชบัญญัติค่าตอบแทนผู้เสียหายและค่าทดแทนและค่าใช้จ่ายแก่จำเลยในคดีอาญา พ.ศ. 2544 และ การเยียวยาตามพระราชบัญญัติหลักประกันสุขภาพ พ.ศ.2545 ในมาตรา 41 ที่นำหลักการชดเชยความเสียหายโดยไม่ต้องพิสูจน์ความผิดมาใช้ แต่ยังไม่ครอบคลุมความเสียหายจากการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม ข้อเสนอแนะจากงานวิจัยเพื่อเป็นแนวทางป้องกันการตกเป็นเหยื่อศัลยกรรมความงาม คือ ควรเพิ่มช่องทางตรวจสอบใบอนุญาตประกอบกิจการสถานเสริมความงาม, การมีข้อกำหนดเกี่ยวกับคุณลักษณะของแพทย์ที่จะทำศัลยกรรมความงาม, การทำความเข้าใจระหว่างแพทย์และผู้รับบริการถึงขั้นตอนและวิธีการรักษา การผ่าตัด และผลกระทบ, มีการควบคุมข้อความที่ใช้โฆษณาของคลินิกศัลยกรรมให้มีความเหมาะสม, การประชาสัมพันธ์ให้ความรู้แก่ประชาชนถึงผลดีและผลเสียที่อาจเกิดขึ้นภายหลังการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม และการตรวจสอบแพทย์และคลินิกศัลยกรรมความงาม รวมทั้งการผสานการทำงานเชิงรุกของหน่วยงานภาครัฐและมีหน่วยงานกลางกำกับดูแลเฉพาะเรื่องศัลยกรรมความงาม และแนวทางการเยียวยาความเสียหายจากการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม คือ เพิ่มเติมข้อกำหนดในพระราชบัญญัติพระราชบัญญัติหลักประกันสุขภาพ พ.ศ.2545 ในมาตรา 41 ให้มีการชดเชยที่ครอบคลุมความเสียหายจากการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม, จัดให้มีการประกันภัยความรับผิดทางการแพทย์ หรือกองทุนเพื่อเยียวยากรณีเกิดความผิดพลาดจากการทำศัลยกรรมความงาม

Help seeking after an experience of campus sexual assault is an important link for many survivors towards processing and healing. College campuses have a plethora of resources available, from free counseling, health clinics, advocates, and reporting options all right on their doorstep. Yet many students do not seek help from these offices. This study sought to find out why by looking beyond the victim, and examining the relationship between Title IX policy, professionals who provide resources, and victims. Through both policy analysis and in-depth interviews with both professionals and victims, this study found that Title IX policy codify the social …

In a five-to-four decision announced in February of 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the parents of an unarmed fifteen-year-old Mexican national killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in a cross-border shooting, cannot sue for damages in U.S. civil court. Here, we critique the majority and dissenting opinions and attempt to reconcile the strikingly different approach each used to resolve the case. Using a publicly available data set, we examine the homicide in Hernández v. Mesa, against the circumstances and context in which underage youth were killed by police within the United States over a five year …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัญหาและอุปสรรคของการสืบสวนสอบสวนคดียาเสพติดและเพื่อศึกษาแนวทางการพัฒนารูปแบบการสืบสวนสอบสวนคดียาเสพติดในลักษณะองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติในประเทศไทย โดยการวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพและการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณโดยการศึกษาเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก การประชุมกลุ่มย่อยและการเก็บแบบสอบถามจากบุคลากรในกระบวนการยุติธรรม เครื่องมือในการวิจัยได้แก่ แบบสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกแบบมีโครงสร้าง แบบประชุมกลุ่มย่อยและแบบสอบถามและผู้วิจัยวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหารวมถึงสถิติพรรณนา ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) ปัญหาและอุปสรรคของการสืบสวนสอบสวนคดียาเสพติดในประเทศไทยประกอบด้วย 1.1) ด้านนโยบายและยุทธศาสตร์ที่ยังขาดยุทธศาสตร์ที่มีประสิทธิภาพและขาดนโยบายในการป้องกันและปราบปรามคดียาเสพติดในลักษณะองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติอย่างจริงจัง 1.2) ด้านกฎหมายและการลงโทษซึ่งการบังคับใช้กฎหมายและการลงโทษยังขาดประสิทธิภาพและไม่มีการนำมาตรการมาใช้อย่างจริงจัง 1.3) ด้านหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องการปฏิบัติงานในการสืบสวนสอบสวนแต่ละหน่วยงานแตกต่างกัน ตลอดจนไม่ได้รับความร่วมมือจากหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องในการให้ข้อมูลที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อรูปคดีและ 1.4) ด้านบุคลากร เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐขาดประสบการณ์ในคดียาเสพติดในลักษณะองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติและ 2) แนวทางการพัฒนารูปแบบการสืบสวนสอบสวนคดียาเสพติดในลักษณะองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติในประเทศไทยภาครัฐต้องมีแนวทางการพัฒนาในด้าน 2.1) นโยบายและยุทธศาสตร์โดยการพัฒนานโยบายและยุทธศาสตร์ให้สอดคล้องกับสถานการณ์ยาเสพติด 2.2) ด้านกฎหมายและการลงโทษ เช่น การแก้ไขกลไกทางกฎหมาย/แนวทางการปฏิบัติระเบียบที่เกี่ยวข้องให้เหมาะสมให้เจ้าหน้าที่เข้าถึงข้อมูลต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว 2.3) ด้านหน่วยงาน สร้างความร่วมมือกับภาคเอกชนในการเข้าถึงข้อมูล ตลอดจนหน่วยงานภาคีทั้งในและต่างประเทศและ 2.4) ด้านบุคลากร เช่น ความรู้ความเข้าใจ ความเชี่ยวชาญ ตลอดจนการจัดสรรทรัพยากรบุคคลให้เหมาะสมทั้งนี้การพัฒนาดังกล่าวเพื่อให้การดำเนินการสืบสวนสอบสวนคดียาเสพติดในลักษณะองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติในประเทศไทยมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้นและนำผู้กระทำผิดมาลงโทษตามกฎหมาย

Status degradation ceremonies are a process through which a denouncer(s) and members of a community shift an individual’s status within their social group to a lower position (Garfinkel, 1956). Current status degradation ceremony literature primarily focuses on ceremonies that are carried out by formal officials as well as the impacts of these ceremonies on the denounced individuals. This research provides insights into ceremonies led by “pseudo-officials,” individuals or groups who hold no formally recognised position but claim to act in the public interest in the same manner as formally appointed officials are expected to. This dissertation explores whether and how the re-election prospects faced by trial court judges in many American states influence criminal justice policy, specifically, state levels of incarceration, as well as the disparity in rates of incarceration for Whites and Blacks. Do states where trial court judges must worry about facing reelection tend to encourage judicial behavior that results in higher incarceration rates? And are levels of incarceration and racial disparities in the states influenced by the proportion of the state publics who want more punitive policies? The opioid epidemic in the United States does not discriminate. With previous research showing the rise of the opioid epidemic and how it is impacting all communities, there is a lack of research addressing perceptions towards the opioid epidemic on a national level and in local communities. Feminist Action Against Pornography In Japan: Unexpected Success In An Unlikely Place, Caroline Norma, Seiya Morita

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

In late 2016 a feminist movement against problems of commercial sexual exploitation, and especially issues of coerced pornography filming, arose in Japan. This article describes the history of this movement as it mobilized to combat human rights violations perpetrated by the country’s pornographers. The movement’s success came not spontaneously or haphazardly; in fact, it was orchestrated earlier over a full decade-and-a-half by activists who persevered in researching and highlighting pornography’s harms in a civil environment of hostility, isolation and social derision, even among progressive groups and individuals. The Anti-Pornography and Prostitution Research Group (APP) was particularly prominent in this history. …

This research examines a predominately African American women’s professional amateur basketball league located on the Westside of Chicago, known as ASWBL Chicago Pro Am. The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of amateur league team membership on the development and continued support of women players, in particular self-esteem, confidence, and empowerment. This study also presents the common issues women amateur basketball players are faced with, such as stereotypes and analyze how basketball influences their intersectional identities.
