Transforming Communities

Climate change is altering global ecosystems and imperiling human health, but knowledge of these impacts does not always translate into adaptation and mitigation action. Many solutions fall under decarbonization, or the reduction and capture of atmospheric carbon. These actions are increasingly developed at more localized, sub-state levels. Thus, understanding the attitudes of Cache County, Utah, residents, including students and faculty at Utah State University, toward different decarbonization techniques will be important to building successful climate action plans and policies. Creative Engagement for Community Through the Life-Span

Creative Engagement includes crafts, cultural practices, expressive arts, and activities that bring people together. Having access to such activities enables people to develop healthy habits, social interactions, and build community that can sustain one throughout the lifespan. On-going research indicates that Creative Engagement Activities, and the Communities of Practice that build around them, benefit people throughout the life-span, but become particularly important to older adults, by building resilience and social connections, in the face of inevitable life losses.

Patti Ruskey started the Coffee Hag in 1992 and was the proprietor for 15 years. Across from Ardent Milling, down the block from the Reconciliation Park, it has been a community center for more than 30 years now, a place for coffee and vegetarian food, but also a venue for artists, writers, musicians and a safe place for LGBTQ folks. Community Viability And Attitudes Toward Mental Illness: Rural Insights For Community-Based Care, Carrie N. Baker, Sarah A. Bush

Access to mental healthcare varies greatly in rural, suburban, and urban communities. The community viability indicator (CVI) and the community attitudes to mental illness (CAMI) scale are tools for understanding a community’s health and viability and their receptiveness toward people with mental illness. This study of US adults (n = 1,028) in rural, urban, and suburban communities aimed to describe the relationship between community viability and community attitudes toward mental illness and determine the effect of community type on CAMI scores. Results revealed positive associations between community attitudes toward mental illness and community viability for rural and suburban community members. …

Rural Nebraskans are more positive about the current change in their communities this year but are less positive about its future. Starting three years ago, the proportion believing their community changed for the worse was more than the proportion believing it had changed for the better (similar to what occurred in 2003 and 2009). The Town of Marshfield’s Age and Dementia Friendly action plan signifies a milestone and reflects many years of dedication to creating environments within Marshfield that are supportive of residents of all ages and abilities. Guided by the Council on Aging (COA), the Town of Marshfield is dedicated to understanding and responding to the needs and interests of older adults in the community. Over the years, the share of residents over age 60 has steadily grown. A needs assessment was undertaken to support planning on the part of the City of Newton and the Department of Older Adult Services. Results presented here focus on the characteristics and needs of Newton residents who are aged 60 and older. Data was collected via key informant interviews, focus groups with residents and stakeholders and a mailed survey of residents aged 60 and older. Preexisting research on intergenerational trauma transmission primarily addresses biological and behavioral routes of transmission, leaving little room for systemic influences. This research reviews preexisting biological and behavioral contributors and explores systemic contributors to intergenerational trauma transmission in American families as it relates to post-traumatic growth, parental centrality distress, and parenting styles. It was that post-traumatic growth and parental centrality of distress (comprised of ACES, centrality of events, and access to community resources) and PTG predict parenting styles.
