Mature adults are reimagining retirement, seeking encore careers filled with passion and mission. Simultaneously, nonprofits are struggling to attract and retain talent while battling large scale social issues. Our country faces a social justice opportunity to make positive change in our communities by guiding encore career individuals into the social sector. This capstone project creates a toolkit filled with skills and assessments to uncover transferable skills individuals can utilize in their next career. The contributions made by college students as volunteer mentors are incredibly valuable in building our communities; and it is equally valuable to recognize the outcomes experienced by college students through such experiences. This experience positions college student mentors as learners and leaders, and examination of such roles must consider such complexity. This paper examines the outcomes experienced by college student mentors through the nonprofit organization Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG). A mixed methods program evaluation was completed that utilized secondary data from SWSG to examine outcomes experienced by the college student program participants. Kiskeya Reimagined brings together Dominican and Haitian communities to watch a film documentary on specific causes to the historic conflict between the two societies; allowing for community reflections and expert panel discussions. The research uses conflict theory to describe the opposition between Dominicans and Haitians as a problem between class systems and colonial powers using their capital and racism as a tool to change the history of the island and manipulate the general population. Intergenerational Space-Holding Within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Gender & Sexual Minority Communities, Shaun William Kevin Connors

This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.

The activities in which children and youth engage while outside of school hours are critical to their development, highlighting the need for quality afterschool programs that engage students – regardless of gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or minority classification. STEM Ready set out to study the effectiveness of an experiential education pedagogy approach in the design of a professional workshop for undergraduate volunteers who work directly with these marginalized populations in afterschool programs. Youth voice is often excluded from important community conversations regarding social issues. Most individuals do not know how to engage in such complex topics with youth and often find themselves silencing youth or staying silent themselves when it comes up in discussions. This project was created in an effort to determine if art can be used as an effective mechanism for engaging youth in these critical conversations. A month-long program was created and implemented with eleven youth members and culminated in a final showcase where the youth shared their perceptions on racism with community members. According to Lawrence Public Schools (2017), 64.9% of students are economically disadvantaged, meaning that many of these students may not be receiving the mental health treatment they need. For this project, a facilitate discussion on mental health and art as an outlet for one’s emotions occurred at Elevated Thought, a youth and social justice organization in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Altogether, the discussion brought up four themes: 1) Community & Institutions, 2) Lack of Access, 3) Mistrust & Stigma, 4) Art & Self. This participatory social justice focused project used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to examine how the intergenerational model challenges ageism in society. This project provided a space for knowledge creation and committed action of community leaders of the North Shore, MA. The emerging field of Girl Studies reflects increasing interest in social justice programming and research in higher education. Yet much girl-centered work has tied the concept of allyship to traditional service models, without examining the power structures reinforced by top-down service practices. Academia, social movements, and larger society have historically failed to center the voices of girls or the diversity of girlhood(s). Global atrocity and conflict has dramatically increased the number of displaced persons, refugees, and asylum seekers looking for resettlement opportunities. Throughout history, the United States has resettled the most refugees despite lack of public approval. In recent years, xenophobia has been exacerbated by vehement attacks of refugees by the media and people in power.
