What Factors Influence Chinese Students To Choose Master Program In Jmc: A Phenomenological Study, Zhiwei Wang Dr., Zhenbiao He Prof., Zhengke Fu Dr.

The Qualitative Report

The number of Chinese postgraduates in JMC has steadily increased with the growing number of JCC master’s programs in in China. Little is known about key factors that influence Chinese students’ decisions in choosing which program attend. In order to fill a gap in the academic field, a qualitative phenomenological approach was applied to examine the experiences of seven Chinese master’s students in JMC from three different universities in Zhejiang province, China. Three important themes have been created including (1) geographical advantages; (2) recommendation of peers and professors; and (3) course design and curriculum. These findings have important implications for …

Consumers' Preferred Body Scanning Technology: A Comparison, Saiful Islam Mar 2020

Consumers' Preferred Body Scanning Technology: A Comparison, Saiful Islam

LSU Master's Theses

Poor fit of apparel products has been troublesome for both the consumers and manufacturers for many years. The acquisition of a correct set of body measurements is crucially important for achieving proper fitting apparel. Three-dimensional body scanning technology has been recognized as a promising alternative to the traditional measuring tape method of obtaining body measurements. Three-dimensional body scanners are quick, efficient, highly reproducible, and largely free of error related to human intervention.

The purpose of this study was to investigate consumers’ preferred type of body scanning technology. Three types of body scanners (traditional body scanner, suit-based body scanner, and mobile-based …

Free And Reduced-Price Lunch Eligibility By New Hampshire State Legislative District, Sarah Boege, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Sarah Boege and Jessica Carson translate New Hampshire free and reduced-price lunch eligibility data from the school level to the state House of Representatives legislative district level so that legislators have another resource for understanding the distribution of low-income families across the state and the extent to which child nutrition programs are especially relevant in their districts. They report that although the distribution of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch (FRPL) across the state follows established patterns of child and family poverty, there is significant variation by House legislative district. The House district with the …

Two Implementation Models Of Workers' Health Education Programs In Egypt: What Works? What Doesn't Work?, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Norhan Bader, Elizabeth Tobey, Aparna Jain

Reproductive Health

This brief presents findings from two models of workers’ health education programs implemented by the Evidence Project/Population Council in Egypt. The two interventions aimed to increase family planning (FP) service demand among young people aged 18–35 in Port Said and urban Souhag. In Port Said, male and female factory workers who were trained as peer educators shared family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) information with fellow factory workers, distributed communication materials, and provided referrals to infirmary nurses trained in FP counseling. In Souhag, male and female peer educators were trained to provide integrated FP/RH and livelihood workshops to job seekers. Results of …

Gofundtransitions: Narratives Of Transnormativity And The Limits Of Crowdfunding Livable Futures, Hayden J. Fulton Mar 2020

Gofundtransitions: Narratives Of Transnormativity And The Limits Of Crowdfunding Livable Futures, Hayden J. Fulton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Crowdfunding websites, such as GoFundMe, have provided a new avenue for (some) individuals to fund their healthcare needs. The use of these sites requires individuals to story their medical need, in the hopes of receiving financial assistance. Trans individuals encounter unique challenges within the healthcare system, including providers’ lack of knowledge, a dearth of competent care, and widespread individual and institutional cissexism. Because of the difficulties acquiring competent trans-healthcare compounded with broader inadequacies in our healthcare system, many trans folks and their loved ones turn to crowdfunding platforms to help cover the cost of medical transition. In this thesis I …

Cooperative Acceptance And Tabletop Representation: Gender And Sexuality In The Fantasy Tabletop Role-Playing Game Dungeons And Dragons, Renee Pinkston Mar 2020

Cooperative Acceptance And Tabletop Representation: Gender And Sexuality In The Fantasy Tabletop Role-Playing Game Dungeons And Dragons, Renee Pinkston

Student Theses and Dissertations

Gender and sexuality are ‘hot topics,’ often being the center of much debate and discussion. Although seemingly isolated, these subjects are found embedded and woven throughout aspects of culture including games. I argue that games like Dungeons and Dragons have within them core elements related directly to gender and sexuality and that since its creation in 1974, Dungeons and Dragons has evolved from being a game that exhibited both sexism and misogyny into a gaming platform that exhibits an open and accepting view of both gender and sexuality not just within the game but outside of the game in its …

The New Veil Of Race-Neutrality: A Critical Race Perspective On The Disproportionate Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males, Robert Durell Mccord Mar 2020

The New Veil Of Race-Neutrality: A Critical Race Perspective On The Disproportionate Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males, Robert Durell Mccord

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study conducts a qualitative thematic analysis of mass media framing of victims and perpetrators of police-involved killings of unarmed black males, the legal outcomes of the investigations into these killings, and the community response in the aftermath. This research finds five themes within the data: Dispute over Justice, Colorblind Racism, Distrust of the Criminal Justice System, Officer Vindication, and Suppression of Black Protest. I find that systemic issues in police use of force are exacerbated by preexisting racial inequalities and ideologies that perpetuate the racial status quo, wherein these killings are deemed justified. The implications that these killings convey …

Distribution Of New Hampshire’S Older Population Complicates Health Care Delivery During Coronavirus Epidemic, Kenneth M. Johnson Mar 2020

Distribution Of New Hampshire’S Older Population Complicates Health Care Delivery During Coronavirus Epidemic, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this data snapshot, author Kenneth Johnson discusses the uneven spatial distribution of New Hampshire’s older population and suggests that it may complicate the delivery of health care to the state’s population during the COVID-19 epidemic. Older adults are much more likely to experience serious health consequences as a result of exposure to COVID-19. Thus, access to health care is of critical importance for older adults. Though most older adults reside in southern New Hampshire, seniors make up a larger proportion of the population in sparsely settled northern New Hampshire.

Labor Unions And Equal Pay For Faculty: A Longitudinal Study Of Gender Pay Gaps In A Unionized Institutional Context, Rodrigo Dominguez-Villegas, Laurel Smith-Doerr, Henry Renski, Laras Sekarasih Mar 2020

Labor Unions And Equal Pay For Faculty: A Longitudinal Study Of Gender Pay Gaps In A Unionized Institutional Context, Rodrigo Dominguez-Villegas, Laurel Smith-Doerr, Henry Renski, Laras Sekarasih

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Previous single university studies of gender equity in faculty salaries conducted at both private and public universities in the U.S. have consistently found significant within-job gender gaps in pay. This study presents data from a less common labor context for faculty: a strongly unionized campus. Using data on all faculty at a large public university 2003-2015, three kinds of multivariate analyses are conducted: OLS multivariate regressions that include controls for race, field, and rank; Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition models to identify the explained and unexplained portions of the gender gap; and innovative longitudinal models for wage growth trajectories to examine the change …

Renal Safety And Racial Disparity In Patients On Antiviral Treatment For Chronic Hepatitis B, Matthew Miller, Sindhuri Benjaram, Raya Kutaimy, Paul Naylor, Elizabeth May, Murray Ehrinpreis, Milton Mutchnick

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background:

Many African Americans (AA) are chronically infected with Hepatitis B (HBV). While antiviral therapy is highly effective, clinical trials suggest a treatment-related decline in kidney function is possible. Given that chronic HBV predominately affects Asians worldwide, most studies have contained few AA patients. We evaluated these treatment-related kidney function changes in our predominately AA patient population.

Methods:

From 225 HBV patients, we identified 42 patients who were not co-infected with HIV or HCV, had a recent visit, and at least one earlier visit (before Jan 2017). If on treatment with antivirals it must have been for at least 2 …

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau Mar 2020

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The Philippines is commonly understood to occupy an anomalous position in Southeast Asian area studies. This essay explores the logic, politics, and logistics of the inclusion and exclusion of the Philippines in or from Southeast Asian studies. Perspectives on and from the Philippines can help rethink and refine concepts of “region” by emphasizing, rather than glossing over, the transregional connections and histories that link the Philippines and its localities to its neighbors, to various regions, and to the world. Area studies need not be hobbled by an intellectual parochialism that cordons off analysis at any given local, national, regional, and …

“Philippine Indios Were European Constitutional Spaniards”: Filipino Reception Of The Cádiz Constitution, 1813–1814, Abisai; University Pérez

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle traces the impact of the 1812 Cádiz Constitution on the native population of the Philippines. It analyzes the contradictions that the constitution posed to the juridical status of natives who were granted citizenship rights and explores how the natives received the charter through the constitutional oath, a civic festival whereby local subjects swore fealty to the charter. It analyzes the Spanish legal culture that sustained the special legal régime granted to natives since the late sixteenth century, the debates that originated in the Cortes de Cádiz, and the modified version of the constitution that was created to dovetail with …

De Estatura Regular: Height And Filipino Bodily Representations During The Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), Gideon; University Lasco

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle seeks to contribute to the “history of height” in the Philippines by looking at Filipino bodily representations and height differences during the Spanish colonial period. From Pigafetta’s account onward, European chroniclers typically described Indios (natives) as having average, varied, or unremarkable height. However, during the nineteenth century a new discourse emerged: that of a short-statured Filipino. Likely the consequence of actual physical changes and nascent racial ideologies on the part of Spaniards, this view would set the stage for Filipinos to be typologizedas “short”—and for shortness to be problematized as a sign of racial and social inferiority.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • …

Under The Aegis Of Science: The Philippine Scientific Community Before The Second World War, Jonathan Victor Baldoza

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thearticle explores the formation of a prewar community of Filipino scientists nurtured and trained within the scientific order that American scientists installed, developed, and managed in the early part of the twentieth century. It examines vital institutions that shaped and recast the landscape of scientific knowledge production in the Philippines before the Second World War. It explores the ways by which Filipino scientists, endowed with intellectual legitimacy but ambiguously situated in relation to US rule, actively participated in planning for the forthcoming nation, bearing the torch of science as key to the nation’s progress and modernity.KEYWORDS: COLONIAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE …

“But I’M Standing Inside Right Now And I Need Help”: Security Projects And The Perceptions Of Campus Security, Andrea Corradi, Carrie B. Sanders, James Popham

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Acts of violence at institutions of higher education have been heavily publicized, leading security on post-secondary campuses to become a hotbed issue in the media and in the daily lives of those who attend them. With extensive media coverage of events such as the attack on Jeanne Clery, and the mass shootings at Northern Illinois University, Dawson College, and Virginia Tech, many post-secondary schools are working to enhance their security practices. The present study uses Valverde’s (2001; 2008; 2009; 2010; 2011; 2014) security projects framework to examine the lived experiences of security measures on a Canadian urban-integrated campus. Through semi-structured …

Public Opinion Of The Police In 1930s America: A Qualitative Historiographical Study, Willard M. Oliver Mar 2020

Public Opinion Of The Police In 1930s America: A Qualitative Historiographical Study, Willard M. Oliver

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Public opinion polls largely developed post-WWII and questions about the police did not appear until the late 1960s. Since then, over 100+ studies have assessed the modern-day public opinion of the police, but none have looked to public opinion from an earlier time period. This study uses a qualitative historiographical approach for assessing public opinion of the police in the 1930s by drawing on the primary source of a letter exchange between two of that eras greatest pulp writers: Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. Findings suggest similarities between the 1930s and present day public opinion of the police."
