Adapting To Retention: A Naturalistic Study Revealing The Coping Resources Of Nonpromoted Students And Their Parents, Robbie J. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to uncover the feelings and reactions of students and their parents in regard to the nonpromotion experience. Families with children who had been retained at least once in grades one through eight were purposefully selected as units of study from one of four area school systems. A total of 52 family members from 22 family units participated in 46 separate, qualitative interviews. The information collected from the interviews was inductively analyzed. Building upon Schlossberg's theory for human adaptation to transitions, seven factors or coping resources emerged from the data that affected the adaptation of …

Toward Assessment Of Programs In Humboldt County Providing Adjustment Assistance To Adult Lao-Hmong Refugees, Susan D. Smith Jan 1992

Toward Assessment Of Programs In Humboldt County Providing Adjustment Assistance To Adult Lao-Hmong Refugees, Susan D. Smith

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis is a beginning of appraisal of programs in Humboldt County designed to facilitate the adjustment of adult Southeast Asian Lao-Hmong refugees to the host culture and Humboldt County community, examined from the perspective of social psychology and application of Naomi Golan's (1981) strategies for transitions of persons who have experienced radical changes in their life structure. The assessment focuses on the purpose and methods of assistance, and the difficulties and successes encountered in aiding the Hmong in their adjustment to American culture, from the viewpoint of the assistance programs. Because this is an initial endeavor, it is hoped …

Integration And Resolution, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez Jan 1992

Integration And Resolution, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …

Disimprisoning The Soul From Vergüenza (Shame): A Socio-Political Systems Perspective, Maribal Rodríquez-López

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The role of shame in the lives of people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is examined. Although some will argue that shame can be healthy, it can also be destructive, resulting in immense suffering and dysfunction. Shame is defined as existing not only within an individual, but in families, communities, societies, and nations. This work is heavily documented with supporting materials from sociologists, social workers, psychologists, and historians; as well as the author's personal experience as a woman of Puerto Rican/Taino Indian descent. Further findings are provided from the author's professional work as a registered occupational therapist, crisis counselor, …

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell May 1991

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell

Faculty Publications

Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

Reverse Peace Corps: A Proposal On The Recruitment Of Third World Nationals As Peace Corps Volunteers Assigned To The United States, Payam Foroughi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

"War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." (Orwell 1949, p. 5). Indeed, in 1960, when President Kennedy announced his future plans for a Peace Corps of young Americans, there were already an estimated 10,000 Americans working in the Third World country of Vietnam in the capacity of "military advisors". By 1963 there were 17,000 such Americans in Vietnam and another 7,000 Americans in 44 other Third World countries working as Peace Corps Volunteers (Rice 1985).

In 1835, reflecting on the then young America, Tocqueville stated that "of all nations, those most fond of peace are democratic nations" and …

Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones Jun 1990

Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones

Trotter Review

The late Oliver C. Cox, one of the most insightful black Americans from the leftist tradition, was not often fooled. In his classic 1948 work, Caste, Class, and Race, Cox, a long-time professor of sociology at Lincoln University in Missouri, revealed the nonsensical underpinnings of what then passed for the serious study of comparative race relations among sociologists in the United States. So successful was Cox that his book was thoroughly and deeply buried by the sociological establishment. When Pierre L. van den Berghe published Race and Racism: A Comparative Perspective in 1967, sociologists hailed his work as the …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter May 1990

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the continuous instability of policy decisions relating to the effectiveness of Civilian Conservation Centers and Contract Centers was a result of measurable differences in performance between the two models. Six hypotheses tested differences between types of centers on six quantitative variables which were: average length of stay, job placement, hourly starting wages, educational gains in reading, math, and General Educational Development (GED). To investigate the problem, 30 Civilian Conservation Centers and 17 comparably sized Contract Centers were selected. Reports from the Department of Labor's Automated Management System provided data for comparison …

Community Power In Humboldt County: A Reputational Approach, Jerome Matthew Bearbower Jan 1990

Community Power In Humboldt County: A Reputational Approach, Jerome Matthew Bearbower

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The primary objective of this project is to better understand the feasibility of utilizing variables such as population numbers, economic diversity, cultural diversity, and the structure of government as measuring tools for identifying community power distributions within a larger pluralist/elitist framework. This is significant for two reasons. Theoretically, current generalizations in the field can be scientifically tested within an empirical framework. Practically, for those individuals/groups who are working towards social change, an informed picture of leadership distributions can be tantamount to effective participation within the community policy process. Methodologically, this study will utilize the reputational approach, originally proposed by Floyd …

Mormon Return Migration: A Return To Zion, Don Calder Larson May 1988

Mormon Return Migration: A Return To Zion, Don Calder Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this research has been to study contemporary Mormon migration in the United States. The underlying assumption of the research was that Utah Mormons are culturally and normatively different from Mormons living elsewhere. Research was carried out in two stages. The first stage was a description of migration streams between four designated regions, i.e. Utah, states adjacent to Utah, other Western states, and the remaining Other states. This stage also determined the proportion of return migration in each stream. It provides initial evidence of the cultural pull of Utah for Mormons.

The second stage was a multivariate analysis …

Murder And Capital-Punishment In The Evolving Context Of The Post-Furman Era, Ruth D. Peterson, William C. Bailey Mar 1988

Murder And Capital-Punishment In The Evolving Context Of The Post-Furman Era, Ruth D. Peterson, William C. Bailey

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

In view of (1) escalating national attention, and political and judicial activity centering on capital punishment during the past decade and a half, and (2) concomitant changes in homicides this paper investigates the impact of the death penalty on state homicide rates for the post-Furman period, 1973 -84 The research also addresses the debate over the relative merits of the contiguous state matching strategy versus multiple regression as a means of controlling for the influence of possible confounding factors in examining the capital punishment/homicide relationship. The two approaches yield quite similar results. Consistent with a long line of deterrence research, …
