Section XV: Biology and the Rise of the Social Sciences

The two areas of the social sciences which were more stimulated by Darwin's research were anthropology and sociology. The Frenchman, Auguste Comte (1798-1857), generally regarded as the father of sociology and the originator of that term, laid the groundwork for the immediate application of the law of evolution to the study of society. Comte's conception of sociology is derived from his philosophy of history. Sharing the Enlightenment belief in progress, Comte saw history evolving through three stages. The first was the theological stage, in which men supplied supernatural explanations for the natural and social phenomena. This was followed bu what …

Section XXI: Meaning in the Social Sciences

Sociology is one of the sciences of human behavior that has grown out of Enlightenment thought. In its present method and theory there is substantially nothing that was not anticipated by gifted seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century thinkers and their intellectual offspring in the Enlightenment tradition. From particular aspects of the grand theoretical syntheses that were characteristic of these centuries, a process of refinement and specialization has produced the sociology of the present day. An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark Jan 1951

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis of this study is that there is a relationship between race attitudes and "denominocentrism, " and with certain social categories, e.g., age, social class, income, education, etc., in the Church of the Brethren in the Pacific Coast Region. If a relationship can be identified and analyzed, the results will be of value as tools in helping to understand, predict, and change human behavior. It might be further suggested that if there is a strong relationship between attitudes and certain social categories in the church, attitudes of the Brethren on these issues, and perhaps on many more, are, to …

The Sociological And Social-Psychological Functions Of The Urban Protestant Church, Lois Chambers Jan 1950

The Sociological And Social-Psychological Functions Of The Urban Protestant Church, Lois Chambers

Honors Papers

The major purpose of the paper is, of course, to record the results of a very limited study ofsome of the functions of urban Protestant churches. However, in order that this particular study may be seen in proper context, it seems necessary to begin the report with a brief consideration of the general area of the sociology of religion, including major questions with which previous research and theories have been concerned, and significant trends in contemporary research in this area.

A further requirement for adequate reporting of a study such as this one seems to be a complete description of …

Persistence Of A Culture's Patterns In Prisons Of War, Anne Hoffman Senter

Sociology ETDs

This study is an investigation of prisoner of war sociology, specifically that of Japanese-controlled prison camps in which American soldiers captured in the Philippine Islands in the spring of 1942 were confined for almost three and one-half years. It is an attempt to discover the informal social social structure obtaining in these camps and helps answer answer the question of what happened when the existing social structure of the army was torn down and the men were thrown into a life requiring a rebuilding and realignment of social relationships and values.

The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder Jun 1931

The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of immigration has always been a part of American thought. It is often said that all Americans are immigrants; that the only real American is the Indian. But this assertion is open to argument as the anthropologist tells us that the Indian is but the descendant of some other race which came to these shores thousands of years ago.

Be that as it may, the fact remains that this country is peopled by representatives of many races and nationalities, many of whom were born in a foreign land.

In this study of Mexican immigration, the subject has …

The Mexican Colony In South Lorain, Ohio: An Exploratory Study, Robert W. O'Brien Jan 1931

The Mexican Colony In South Lorain, Ohio: An Exploratory Study, Robert W. O'Brien

Honors Papers

The object of this thesis is to show the process of adjustment which the Mexican faces when he leaves his less competitive physical and social environment in Mexico and lives in a typical steel city of the Northern section of the United States. This study is sociological, rather than economic in its approach. It is an attempt to get at the way in which these people live, and the attitudes which they have toward themselves and other groups.

Source Materials On The History And Development Of The San Joaquin River And The Stockton Deep Water Project, J. Norman Wenger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the object of the writer to compile as complete a bibliography, as the time allowed, on the History of the Deep Water Project at Stockton, California.

...

The thesis proper has been directed to cover the major attempts to deepen the water channel from Stockton to San Francisco. Much of this material is not in a form to be readily accessible to the layman so I have included a great deal of it in the form of an Appendix; thus bringing it together, but not making it necessary for the reader to review it unless he or …
