La Lucha Del Mocase Para Desarrollo Y Autonomía, Katie Metcalf Apr 2004

La Lucha Del Mocase Para Desarrollo Y Autonomía, Katie Metcalf

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study is an analysis of the current situation of the small producers of the Movimiento Campesino del Santiago del Estero (MOCASE) to determine the extent they are obtaining a sustainable and autonomous existence by means of rural development projects, with a specific focus on MOCASE from the region of Bandera Bajada, department Figueroa, and their interaction with the Programa Social Agropecuario (PSA). The history of repression and social exclusion of the small producers, both on a provincial and national scale, through the implementation of neoliberal macroeconomic policies, massive land sales to large enterprises, and corrupt government policies have severely …

Culture Of Growth: Teacher Collaboration For The Empowerment Of All Students, Kamilla Bahbahani Apr 2004

Culture Of Growth: Teacher Collaboration For The Empowerment Of All Students, Kamilla Bahbahani

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

This dissertation documents an in-depth year long qualitative case study of three elementary school teachers to address the following research question: what characterizes, and what are the major influences on, an integrated, constructivist-oriented approach to elementary math instruction? The researcher, working collaboratively with the teachers, used a combination of interviews, observations, journaling, and informal discourse to learn about what they want to do in their classes, the various pressures they feel for performance and student learning, the forces they balance in making their instructional choices, and the ways in which they make instructional choices and change their approaches over time. …

The Impact Of War And Wartime On Transition To Adulthood: Vietnam, 1940-1990, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan Apr 2004

The Impact Of War And Wartime On Transition To Adulthood: Vietnam, 1940-1990, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

During the latter half of the 20th century, Vietnam experienced nearly continuous wars, including the Vietnam War (1965-1975). Wars afflicted young Vietnamese adults most and left profound imprints on the life course of those who survived. Based on the 1995 Vietnam Longitudinal Survey, my study uses the life course approach to document how war affects the timing and sequencing of early life course transitions for the Vietnamese growing up between the 1940s and the 1990s. The life course transitions examined include leaving school and entering labor force and first marriage and first birth. I study the impact of war by …

Impact Of Service Learning On Physical Therapist Students' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Older Adults And On Their Critical Thinking Ability, Janna Beling Apr 2004

Impact Of Service Learning On Physical Therapist Students' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Older Adults And On Their Critical Thinking Ability, Janna Beling

Service Learning, General

As the number and proportion of elderly people rapidly increase in the next few decades, there will be increased demands for physical therapists to work with older clients. Although the availability of physical therapists to work with elderly people will be determined, in part, by their personal preferences,1 most physical therapists will be routinely required to work with elderly clients and clients' aging family members.2 In order to provide effective services, it is imperative that physical therapist students possess adequate knowledge about the aging process and recognize the individuality of older clients, as well as their capacity for …

Service-Learning Projects Enhance Student Learning In Strategic Management Courses, John Angelidis, Igor Tomic, Nabil A. Ibrahim

Service Learning, General

Academia has been criticized for Its supposed isolation from society and its lack of emphasis on practical applications and hands-on experience. Institutions of higher education are responding to this criticism by incorporating experiential service-learning in their curricula. One business course which is particularly appropriate for integrating service-learning into the curriculum is Strategic Management.

Motivation To Manage And Status Of Women In Library And Information Science: A Comparative Study Among The United States, India, Singapore And Thailand, Sarla R. Murgai Apr 2004

Motivation To Manage And Status Of Women In Library And Information Science: A Comparative Study Among The United States, India, Singapore And Thailand, Sarla R. Murgai

The Southeastern Librarian

In most non-western societies, the self-system (personal standards of judging and guiding one’s actions) is much more inter-dependent on family and society, whereas in western societies, especially in the U.S., it is dependent on the individual self. Cross-cultural studies suggest that a person’s behavior should be understood in the context of their social experience and social roles. In all the cultures and countries studied, however, the status of women is universally lower than men; consequently there is a need to explore the causes. Professional women have made some strides in penetrating managerial ranks in the library and information science profession, …

How To Be Chinese: Ethnic Chinese Experience A 'Reawakening' Of Their Chinese Identity, Chang Yau Hoon Apr 2004

How To Be Chinese: Ethnic Chinese Experience A 'Reawakening' Of Their Chinese Identity, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The post-Suharto era is an exciting period for Chinese Indonesians and other minority ethnic groups in Indonesia. After over three decades of cultural and political repression, Chinese Indonesians are now being given the opportunity to express their identity. The re-emergence of Chinese religion, language, and press in Indonesia since the end of the New Order, has had a significant impact on the development of ethnic Chinese identity. The strongly anti-Chinese sentiment expressed in the May 1998 riots in Jakarta and elsewhere in Indonesia, including the looting of Chinese-owned shops and businesses and the racially-motivated rapes, drastically altered the position of …

Sexual Abstinence Among Female Undergraduate Students, Emilie R. Klusmeyer '04 Apr 2004

Sexual Abstinence Among Female Undergraduate Students, Emilie R. Klusmeyer '04

Honors Projects

This study, conducted at a liberal arts college in the Midwest, utilizes qualitative data gathered through focus group discussions to examine the factors associated with sexual abstinence among female undergraduate students. Most studies on protection against sexually transmitted infections (STls) among youth have focused on condom usage and monogamy, and have been conducted mostly among high school students, with very few among undergraduate students. Since sexual abstinence is the best protection against pregnancy and STls, this study examines the factors that influence female undergraduate students to remain sexually abstinent or become secondary virgins. It also examines the challenges these sexually …

Child Poverty In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson, William P. O'Hare Mar 2004

Child Poverty In Rural America, Kenneth M. Johnson, William P. O'Hare

Sociology

This report explores the well-being of the 14 million children who live in rural America. Rural families represent a significant share of our total population and they are disproportionately poor, less educated, and underemployed. Yet poor children and the unique challenges they face are often overlooked by policymakers. Poor children living in rural America face significant educational, social, and economic challenges just as their urban counterparts do, but many of these problems are exacerbated by the isolation and limited access to support services common in rural areas.

Restorative Justice, Responsive Regulation And Social Work, Gale Burford, Paul Adams Mar 2004

Restorative Justice, Responsive Regulation And Social Work, Gale Burford, Paul Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Two of the dichotomies or tensions at the heart of this profession are especially important for the themes of this special issue on restorative justice and responsive regulation. These are the relation between formal and informal helping and between care and control, or empowerment and coercion. In this article, we make a case for the importance of Braithwaite's work, especially his (2002) book, Restorative Justice and Responsive Regulation, for conceptualizing the nature of social work in relation to these dualities. Since Braithwaite's writings do not have social work or social welfare scholars and professionals as their primary audience and are …

Working Together To Stop Domestic Violence: State-Community Partnerships And The Changing Meaning Of Public And Private, Kristin A. Kelly Mar 2004

Working Together To Stop Domestic Violence: State-Community Partnerships And The Changing Meaning Of Public And Private, Kristin A. Kelly

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The increasing reliance in the United States on state-community partner- ships to address social problems represents both new opportunities and new dangers. This article presents examples of both possibilities through a consideration of contemporary collaborations between state and nonstate actors in the development of a public response to domestic violence. This discussion provides the basis for an elaboration of a conceptual approach to public/private relationships that replaces the traditional dichotomy with a triangular relationship, of state, family and community. By improving on our ability to think through the complex relationships between these three spheres, it is argued that this model …

Families And The Republic, John Braithwaite Mar 2004

Families And The Republic, John Braithwaite

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Restorative and responsive justice can be a strategy of social work practice that builds democracy bottom-up by seeing families as building blocks of democracy and fonts of democratic sentiment. At the same time, because families are sites of the worst kinds of tyranny and the worst kinds of neglect, a rule of law is needed that imposes public human rights obligations on families. The republican ideal is that this rule of law that constrains people in families should come from the people. Restorative and responsive justice has a strategy for the justice of the people to bubble up into the …
