A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman Jan 2002

A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

People with disabilities are the most oppressed social group in the world. According to some estimates, 500 million people are victims of disability oppression. People with disabilities, as well as society, have undergone radical changes over the last 30 years. Activists, legislators, academics, and families of people with disabilities, have been largely responsible in pointing out the social realities of the disability experience. People with disabilities continue to experience a tremendous amount of discrimination however, and the stigma of being a person with a disability is slow to fade. The current thesis surveys the literature on disability, demonstrating the manner …

Gender Differences In The Frequency Of And Associated Arousal To Romantic And Sexual Fantasies, Jonathan A. Eldredge Jan 2002

Gender Differences In The Frequency Of And Associated Arousal To Romantic And Sexual Fantasies, Jonathan A. Eldredge

Whittier Scholars Program

Romantic fantasies have been an untapped area in research on sexual behavior. The current study sought to study gender differences in romantic and sexual fantasy frequencies, and to discover the sexual arousal associated with both. It was also designed to discover factors that may be correlated with romantic and sexual fantasy frequencies (e.g., religiosity, ethnicity, sexual behavior, etc.) The current study did find significant differences between males and females in romantic and sexual fantasy frequency, and in the associated arousal to these fantasies. Males reported more sexual fantasies than females did, but there was no difference in romantic fantasy frequency. …

Institusi Gereja Semasa Penjajahan Sepanyol Di Filipina : Antara Penyebaran Agama Kristian Dan Campur Tangan Dalam Politik Serta Ekonomi, Thanaraj Gopal

Student Works (2000-2009)

One of the basic aims of the Spanish empire was to spread the Christian faith in its colonies. In the Philippines, this materialized with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and its subsequent colonization by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565. The regular clergies known as friars were responsible in imparting the Christian faith to the locals who absorbed the new faith wholly, albeit, preserving their traditional beliefs to a certain extent. Though Christianiation was successful, the secularization process whereby parishes were to be handed to the secular clergies was denied. This failure had a Jong lasting effect which …

Training Mediators To Be Reflective Practitioners, Christina Gerene Begley Jan 2002

Training Mediators To Be Reflective Practitioners, Christina Gerene Begley

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Mediators, like many other professionals, draw from a broad skill set that includes a variety of communication, listening and analytical proficiencies. While many training programs emphasize the basic theoretical and methodological considerations of competent practice, few - if any - spend time working with new mediators to develop the capacity to be continuous learners. The ability to reflect critically on one’s own professional practice, both through self evaluation and peer assessment, has been a missing component to effectively training mediators. Without critically analyzing one’s own practice, the ability of a professional mediator to work for the best interest of the …

A Broken System, Part Ii: Why There Is So Much Error In Capital Cases And What Can Be Done About It, James S. Liebman, Jeffrey A. Fagan, Andrew Gelman, Valerie West, Garth Davies, Alexander Kiss

Faculty Scholarship

There is growing awareness that serious, reversible error permeates America’s death penalty system, putting innocent lives at risk, heightening the suffering of victims, leaving killers at large, wasting tax dollars, and failing citizens, the courts and the justice system.

Our June 2000 Report shows how often mistakes occur and how serious it is: 68% of all death verdicts imposed and fully reviewed during the 1973-1995 study period were reversed by courts due to serious errors.

Analyses presented for the first time here reveal that 76% of the reversals at the two appeal stages where data are available for study were …

Racial Justice: Moral Or Political?, Kendall Thomas Jan 2002

Racial Justice: Moral Or Political?, Kendall Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

Nearly one hundred years ago, W.E.B. DuBois predicted that the problem of the 20th century would be the problem of the color line. Were he writing today, DuBois might well conclude that in the U.S., the problem of the coming century will be the problem of the color-bind. Although Americans arguably remain "the most 'race-conscious' people on earth," our national conversation about "race" now stands at an impasse. Our ways of talking, or refusing to talk, about race increasingly speak past the racialized dilemmas of educational equity, affirmative action, poverty, welfare reform, housing, lending, labor and employment discrimination, health …

Physician-Related Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Caribbean Women In Toronto, Ilene Hyman, Punam Mony Singh, Marta Meana, Usha George, Lilian M. Wells, Donna E. Stewart

Psychology Faculty Research

BACKGROUND: Minority women in Canada are less likely to be screened for cervical cancer than their counterparts in the general population, despite the fact that the proportion of these women who consult a general practitioner about their health each year is similar to minority women. This study examined the physician and practice characteristics associated with Pap testing and perceived barriers to Pap testing of family physicians serving the Caribbean community of Toronto.

METHODS: A mail-back questionnaire was sent to Toronto family physicians practicing in neighborhoods with a high proportion of Caribbean Canadians.

RESULTS: Although 79.7% of the 64 participating physicians …

Images Of Service: Reflections From The Campus Compact Midwest Collaboration Community Service Directors Fellowship Program 2000-2001, Beth Blissman, Jay Cooper

Higher Education

We Americans are people of the journey. From boats across the Atlantic by way of Pilgrim quest, to the holocaust of the middle passage, to classic travelogues such as On the Road or Travels with Charley (in Search of America}, the stamp of the mythic journey seems to be indelibly planted on our national psyche. And as we all know, journeys have several staple elements: anticipation, consumption of a variety of foods at exorbitant prices, wrestling with a roadmap, and children in the back crying, "Are we there yet?" A quintessentially American component to the journey, however, is the postcard.

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos Jan 2002

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos

Higher Education

Over the past twenty years, there has been a steady increase in the number of students involved in community service and service-learning programs on college campuses. A recent report by Campus Compact (2003) noted that 33 percent of college students on its member campuses were engaged in community service programs during the last academic year. Surveys by Compact found that eleven percent of higher education faculty offered an average of 30 service-learning courses on campuses (Campus Compact 2003, 2003a). Increasingly, institutions of higher education are supporting these efforts by establishing community service and service-learning offices, staffing them, and by providing …

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley Jan 2002

Moving Mountains: Institutional Culture And Transformational Change, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Our institutions are changing all the time but for the most part these changes do not make a big difference, either because the results are confined to an isolated segment of the organization or because the environment is not responsive. To be considered truly transformational, the initiative must alter the culture of the institutions by changing select underlying assumptions and institutional behaviors, processes, and products; it must be deep and pervasive, affecting the whole institution; it must be intentional; and it must occur consistently over time (Eckel, Hill, & Green, 1998).

The Playing Ground Of Childhood: Boyhood Battles In Américo Paredes', George Washington Gómez, Keller Delores Ayers Jan 2002

The Playing Ground Of Childhood: Boyhood Battles In Américo Paredes', George Washington Gómez, Keller Delores Ayers

Ethnic Studies Review

Although playing is generally viewed as a childhood universal--an expected and somewhat innocuous part of children's lives--Chicano writers often particularize play's universality by constructing the diverse grounds of childhood play as sites that encapsulate conflicting subject positions. Among the Chicano texts in which playing shares this complexity as a critical locus for the child protagonist is Américo Paredes' George Washington Gómez. Paredes employs narratives of childhood play in a dialectical pattern that elucidates his protagonist's inner and outer conflicts and that also evokes Ramón Saldívar's theory of Chicano literature. While Guálinto Gomez's playworlds reflect both the violence and discrimination that …

Remembering Poland: The Ethics Of Cultural Histories, William Gorski Jan 2002

Remembering Poland: The Ethics Of Cultural Histories, William Gorski

Ethnic Studies Review

Art Spiegelman's Maus, Cynthia Ozick's The Shawl, and Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation and Exit into History are recent American texts that draw upon cultural histories of Poland to launch their narratives. Each text confronts and reconstructs fragments of twentieth-century Poland at the interactive sites of collective culture and personal memory. By focusing on the contested relationship between Poles and Jews before, during, and after World War II, these texts dredge up the ghosts of centuries-long ethnic animosities. In the post-Cold War era, wherein Eastern Europe struggles to redefine itself, such texts have a formative influence in re-mapping the future …

[Review Of] Marilyn Halter, Shopping For Identity: The Marketing Of Ethnicity, Sarah Shillinger

Ethnic Studies Review

Marilyn Halter has written an informative book on the interaction between the marketplace and ethnic identity in the United States. Her book fills an important gap in ethnic studies literature. While research abounds on the role the marketplace has played in the Americanization of immigrants, few scholars have researched its role in the maintenance of ethnic identity.

[Review Of] Jane M. Gaines, Fire And Desire: Mixed-Race Movies In The Silent Era, George H. Junne Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Jane M.Gaines has written an important book on the topic of race movies and race relations in early American cinema. Using eclectic analyses that range from W.E.B. DuBois' insights on "double consciousness," to queer theory, Gaines is able to critically examine issues of mixed race people and race mixing in silent films. She wonderfully reworks some theories until they yield beneficial interpretations. For example, Gaines argues against the blanket use of psychoanalysis as a tool to comprehend African American Experience, including cinema, because, she says, "Historically psychoanalysis had no cognizance of black people nor was any attempt made to understand …
