Materialities, Discourses, And Entanglements In Gendered Decision-Making And Practices : An Ethnographic Account Of ‘Fish Mammy’ Households In Ghana, Moses Adjei
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Critical feminist scholars have challenged essentialist understandings of gender inequality and the use of discourses to categorize men as superior to women. For critics however, a focus on discourse equally limits our understanding of the role of materialities (human and non-human) in co-creating such social outcomes. Using a new feminist materialist approach, this thesis examines the factors which create opportunities for and obstacles to women’s participation in household and community-based fishery decision-making and practices in Ghana. The study adopts an ethnographic approach using multi-methods including a cross-sectional survey of 400 female fisherfolk, 48 in-depth interviews with female fisherfolk, male fisherfolk …

CCRD Research Report

Building Inclusive Workplaces For Lesbians And Bisexual Women In Hong Kong’S Financial Services Industry, Denise Tse-Shang Tang, Stefanie Teng, Celine Tan, Bonnie Lam, Christina Yuan
CCRD Research Report
Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Women are already less represented at senior levels across various business sectors in Hong Kong. Lesbians and bisexual women face a double glass ceiling in the workplace as a result of both their …

Ka Hing Lau, Robin Stanley Snell
OSL Book / Book Chapter / Manual

Community Impact Feedback Questionnaire (Cifq) : The User Manual, Ka Hing Lau, Robin Stanley Snell
OSL Book / Book Chapter / Manual
Service-learning is an experiential pedagogy designed to benefit all stakeholders, comprising students, educational institutions, instructors, and perhaps more importantly, community partner organizations (CPOs) and the community as a whole. Through serving the community via the CPO, students consolidate their knowledge and skills while applying these in real-life situations. Effective service-learning, therefore, should demonstrate community impact as a result.
However, the community impacts arising from service-learning have not been well demonstrated in past research. One reason for this has been the lack of an effective, standardized tool for measuring the impacts. To address this problem, Lingnan University, in collaboration with The …

Advertisement, Media Bias, Political Polarisation, Sonal Chandra
Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses
When consumers value cognitive consistency between the news they read and policies they support, politicians are induced to make policies that conform to a polarized media landscape which not only depends on user subscription for revenue but also advertisement receipts. Following Guo et. al. (2018), I develop a model to study how the dependency on advertisement revenue affects media bias, political polarisation, and voter preferences. I show that though the equilibrium prices of the two newspapers fall when they depend on advertising receipts, the difference between the equilibrium prices and thus ideological position of a marginal voter remains unchanged, compared …

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
Under the background of globalization, international exchanges and cooperation are becoming more and more frequent, especially in the fields of education and culture among countries. As a new education model, "international education" is getting more and more attention in the development of the country. In this context, the governments of China and the United States have paid more attention to the Sino-American educational and cultural exchanges and implemented a series of policies to expand the scope and depth of exchanges, which have had a profound impact on the future development of education and the diplomatic relationship between China and the …

Public Health Expenditure And Health Outcomes In Nigeria And Ghana : The Role Of Public Policy, Ayomide Oluwaseyi Oladosu
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
This study investigates the effect of public health expenditure and health outcomes in Nigeria and Ghana, captured by infant, maternal, malaria and HIV/AIDS mortality. It also uses the health expenditure commitment at the 1999 United Nations general assembly and the Abuja Declaration of 2000 to examine the role of public policy in this relationship. A linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship and effect of public health expenditure on health outcomes in Nigeria and Ghana. Although the findings disclosed a low public health expenditure in both countries, the Ghanaian case revealed a negative relationship, which was primarily insignificant, …

This study explores the relationship between average life satisfaction of students and their academic achievement in mathematics and science at the macro level of 61 selected countries from the Pisa 2018 assessment. As far as I know, no studies have been conducted to examine achievement in mathematics and science as it related to life satisfaction. Multivariate regression, scatter plot and bivariate correlation were employed using IBM SPSS in this study. The study found no positive correlation between average life satisfaction and academic achievement in mathematics and science. Also, although life satisfaction was a significant predictor of achievement in mathematics, it …
Cold War Intimacy Beyond The Taiwan Strait : Sexual Labour And Chinese Modernities In The Teahouse, I-Ting Chen
Cold War Intimacy Beyond The Taiwan Strait : Sexual Labour And Chinese Modernities In The Teahouse, I-Ting Chen
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research asks who the mainland Chinese hostesses are with regard to not only their sexual labour but also the ways the ambiguity of language, nationality, and history is manifested in their daily life, such as in using Japanese loanword “annada” (sweetheart) to call their clients and being seen as dalumei (the mainland little girl) despite their age and Taiwanese citizenship. What emotions and affects are at work when they sing a duet in both Mandarin and Minnanese with each other to express their feelings? How do we understand the sexual labour and women’s encounters in relation to not only …

Hukou Decentralization And Migrant Students’ Educational Opportunities : Case Studies In Beijing And Shenzhen, China, Bo Li
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Since the 1980s, ongoing reforms in China’s hukou system have drawn increasing attention from various parties, and a consensus generated during the reform period refers to decentralization practices. This research, with reference to new class and social class theories, investigates how social policies alongside decentralization of administration within the hukou system in Beijing and Shenzhen impact on educational opportunities for migrant students. Based on a total of 29 in-depth interviews conducted in these two cities, this research details the differentiation of decentralization practices and influences from two perspectives: 1) financing in private education; and 2) regulation in public education. In …
Effects Of Parental Incarceration On Their Children : A Study Of Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Afua Amankwaa
Effects Of Parental Incarceration On Their Children : A Study Of Children Of Incarcerated Parents, Afua Amankwaa
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The adult prison population is estimated to have increased recently, at a rate similar to the rate at which the total world population has increased. As prison adult population increases, it can be inferred that the number of children with incarcerated parents is also on the rise. However, with lack of data and policy on these children, particularly in the Low Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), little or virtually nothing is known about these children and how they are faring after the separation of their parents from them. This study aimed at bridging this knowledge gap by examining the effects of parental …

With reference to the Chinese government’s effort to promote innovation and entrepreneurship amongst university graduates over the past few years, this thesis explores the complexity and dynamics of young graduates’ entrepreneurship experiences in China’s innovation centre, Shenzhen. This research focuses on why and how graduates pursue their entrepreneurial ventures in Shenzhen and how the complex political, cultural and socio-economic nexuses of this city influence their experiences. In addition to in-depth interviews and social listening, this study applies the quadruple helix model on the local innovation system and adopts sociological theories on the employment destination choice of university graduates and guanxi …
Blurring Boundaries : Life And Work Of Young Middle-Class Women In Post-2000s Urban China, Lili Lin
Blurring Boundaries : Life And Work Of Young Middle-Class Women In Post-2000s Urban China, Lili Lin
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The research concerns young middle-class women’s labor practices and experience in cultural and creative industries (CCI) and the formation of labouring subjectivity in the post-2000s urban China, based on text analysis and eight months of ethnographic fieldwork in Shanghai. Tracing women’s work histories throughout the twentieth century in urban China, it is apparent that women’s work has historically been prominently shaped by reproduction. Women have been positioned as flexible labour and are embodied in the contradiction between production and reproduction. Since the 2000s, a new round of reform has begun calling for ‘upgrading and transforming’ production that is ‘made in …

An Investigation Of The Identity Of Naturalised Players In The Hong Kong Representative Football Team From The Perspective Of Different Hong Kong Football Stakeholders, Sheung Ching Yung
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The study of identity is a controversial topic in football (soccer) and is of growing interest in social science research. Over the past few years, increasing numbers of naturalised players from Africa, Europe, South America and Mainland China are selected on the Hong Kong representative football team. This has created much heated debate among the Hong Kong public and fans on the topic of naturalised players. This thesis first outlines conceptual aspects of identity and argues with special reference to the literature on sporting sociology and politics. If then asks research questions on “why do public suddenly pay much attention …
Constructing The Meaning Of Family In The Context Of Biological Family Separation : A Study Of Children In Institutional Care And Care Leavers In Zimbabwe, Getrude Dadirai Gwenzi
Constructing The Meaning Of Family In The Context Of Biological Family Separation : A Study Of Children In Institutional Care And Care Leavers In Zimbabwe, Getrude Dadirai Gwenzi
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Family has been defined as a powerful and pervasive word in our culture, embracing a variety of social, cultural, economic and symbolic meanings. Its importance for the development and wellbeing of children cannot be overemphasized. How ‘family’ is conceptualized by both children and adults remains a highly-contested subject considering the many changes in the form, structure, and relationships that could be described as ‘family’. Few studies have examined the relational lives of children and young adults who grow up in institutional care from a sociological perspective. The thesis makes meaningful contributions to the literature with a study of children and …
Pathways Toward Adolescents' Wellbeing In Ghana : The Role Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Capital, Evelyn Aboagye Addae
Pathways Toward Adolescents' Wellbeing In Ghana : The Role Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Capital, Evelyn Aboagye Addae
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Social capital has been found to be protective of adolescents’ well-being against effects of low socioeconomic status (SES). However, this protective role of social capital has been less explored in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study hence aims to disentangle this complex relationship while exploring the potential for social capital to be a protective health asset for especially, poor Ghanaian adolescents. Multistage stratified cluster cross-sectional survey data of adolescents (13-18yrs), (N =2,068) was employed in logistic regression and bootstrapping mediation analyses. In the regression analyses: high SES significantly predicted high life satisfaction (LS) but could not predict high happiness. …

Social media is increasingly used for political conversations and debate. In Hong Kong, social media has provided a convenient and accessible platform for stakeholders in the political arena to publicize their ideas and for users to be engaged in political discourse. This study aims at investigating the effects of social media on political participation among Hong Kong youth, who are generally regarded as “digital natives” and “critical citizens”. This study focuses on Facebook, the most widely-used social networking site in Hong Kong, and examines how Facebook use, connection and interactivity with political actors on Facebook, exposure to political information on …
Xiaohui Yan
Xiaohui Yan
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Effects Of Polygyny On Child Health And Determinants Of Birth Registration : The Case Of Nigerian Children, Uchechi Shirley Anaduaka
Effects Of Polygyny On Child Health And Determinants Of Birth Registration : The Case Of Nigerian Children, Uchechi Shirley Anaduaka
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This thesis contains three empirical essays focused on the impact of parental socioeconomic characteristics on early childhood outcomes, namely health and birth registration in Nigeria. The focus is motivated by the growing body of literature showing the crucial role the former play in shaping early childhood outcomes. Nigeria is of utmost concern because of the significant differences in parental socioeconomic characteristics (e.g. polygyny is widespread) and high rates of poor child outcomes (poor health and low birth registration). Identifying the impact of parental socioeconomic characteristics can allow more effective policy interventions for achieving sustainable development goals: health (SDG target 2.2) …

The Dynamics Of Online Shaming : A Sociological Study Of Hong Kong's Virtual World, Yui Fung Yip
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
