This study explored the relationship between coming out and spiritual intelligence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. An online survey that utilized the Gay Identity Questionnaire (GIQ) and the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI) was used to investigate this relationship. Spiritual intelligence is a relatively new concept in the social work field as a method of healing and growing. This can, however, play a potentially important role in empowering LGBTQ youth to overcome negative experiences associated with the coming out process. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors within the family, school, and community environments of Hispanic and Asian adolescents' that may predict mental health (depression and self-esteem). Another aim was to compare the significant predictors of depression and self-esteem between Hispanic and Asian adolescents. This study used secondary data from Wave II of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS). The target population was 2,114 students (1,008 Hispanics and 1,106 Asians) who were about to graduate from high school and 1,213 parents. Sex offenders' high prevalence of alcohol misuse augments their risk of reoffending. Identifying sexual offenders' alcohol misuse patterns and history is vital to effective treatment that lowers rates of recidivism. The present study seeks to determine the prevalence of lifetime alcohol misuse among individuals participating in court mandated outpatient sex offender treatment. Participants were administered the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST). The participants' MAST scores were then separated into categories of, "No Problem (scores 0-5)," "Alcohol Problem (scores 6-8)," and "Alcohol Abuse/Dependence (scores 9+)" to compare with the participants' self-reported alcohol use during their intake assessments. Recent statistics suggest that nearly a quarter of all veterans who have recently returned from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are returning to postsecondary education, many of them motivated to do so by the increased benefits included under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. This bill is intended to increase the educational attainment of these student veterans. To fully realize the potential of this bill to increase academic attainment in this population, however, it must be combined with an effective delivery of services intended to help student veteran's transition to the academic environment as a bridge to productive civilian employment. The purpose of this thesis project was to gain predictive insight into client behaviors that may affect treatment outcomes. This thesis uses data originally collected for a dissemination trial of Cognitive Behavioral therapy being introduced into Texas' community mental health system. Clients that attend scheduled therapy sessions and complete assigned homework to a higher degree are demonstrating better compliance with their treatment. It was hypothesized that those behaviors while factoring in symptom severity and amount of therapy would predict final treatment outcomes as measured by a decrease in symptoms. Mental health needs for immigrants are complicated by previous trauma and living in a new country. This study examined acculturative stress (AS) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among immigrants by conducting a secondary data analysis of the 2002 to 2003 National Latino American and Asian American Study (N=3,259). The primary acculturative stressors identified were limited contact with family and friends, difficulties interacting with others due to language limitations and not receiving the same respect as in the country of origin. Several studies have researched burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, vicarious trauma, and shared trauma of practicing mental health professionals. Yet few have focused directly on the impact of personal trauma history on well-being. This study was an online exploratory design investigating the relationships among counselor personal trauma history, well-being, and the effects of seeing clients with similar trauma. Personal trauma history was determined through a demographical survey, and well-being analyzed using the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL). Objective: There has been much controversy over prescribing stimulant medication to treat the symptoms of childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study aims to explore the relationship between prescribing stimulant and non-stimulant medication for the treatment of childhood ADHD and future substance abuse in adolescents and young adulthood. Method: A systematic review of all ten studies that met inclusion criteria was conducted testing whether stimulant treatment of ADHD reduces or increases the risk for future substance use, abuse and dependency. This qualitative study sought to explore the transmission of and motivation for sex-selective abortion among Indian immigrants in the United States. Using a theoretical framework incorporating social learning theory and self-determination theory, the research design consisted of semi-structured interviews of 20 married Indian immigrant women. Based on an analysis of these interviews, the following emergent themes were discovered: "Problems for and from Girls", "Dowry", "Education (lack of)", "Familial Pressure", "Familial Preference", "Familial Ties", "Inheritance", "Son's Duty", "Money", "Name Carried Forward", and "Want a Boy". The researcher conducted an online survey through social networking sites and online college/university communications to identify the relationship between social influence (e.g. peer acceptance, media exposure) and NSSI behaviors among undergraduate and graduate students from participating colleges and universities in the United States. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses were utilized to analyze the research objectives and a Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated that a positive, direct relationship was found between social influence and NSSI, but it was weak and not statistically significant (r=.20, p=.12). Implications and recommendations for future research as well as practice are discussed.

Nonprofit organizations exist in a world of constantly increasing scrutiny and oversight, while public scandals create an increasing demand for public accountability. Program evaluation is seen as a powerful tool to assist nonprofits in establishing organizational accountability, yet studies suggest that program evaluation is not being used to establish accountability. This systematic review examines the empirical literature in an emerging body of evidence for the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions involving equines across populations. Fourteen full reports in English were extracted from 103 studies accessed through sixteen electronic databases and a hand search. Selected quantitative studies were published in peer-reviewed journals; the gray literature and white papers were also explored. Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO) and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria were applied to all studies. The researcher conducted an online survey through social networking sites to identify variables that influenced marital satisfaction among Operation Iraq Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veterans. Surprisingly, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was not significantly associated with martial satisfaction. However, two key variables were identified to be significant contributors to marital satisfaction: length of time stateside and PCL-M scores. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Therefore, this paper explores the broader underlying risk factors that bring population to a vulnerable state of conflict related internal displacement. The possible root causes of conflict explored here are sustenance, degree of democracy, and global economic power status of countries. This methodology follows quantitative studies with dataset that comprises of the countries with conflict-induced internal displacement for 2007. Hearing loss can adversely affect a marital relationship when a person becomes deafened after the marriage or commitment to cohabitate. This population is growing more quickly than hearing loss professionals had anticipated. Scores of military personnel are returning from deployment with permanent hearing loss. Loud music and environmental noise are rapidly taking their toll on the Baby Boomer generation and those following them.This paper discusses the problems that hearing loss imposes on relationship: Lack of counseling services, grief and loss, intimacy, crisis, co-morbidity, communication, careers, abuse, dependence and co-dependence.

The purpose of this study was to explore the community's perceptions of the social work profession. The study explored five specific areas: 1) view of social work; 2) roles of social workers; 3) community preference's for seeking help; 4) social work's value to community; and 5) sources of perceptions of social work. Over a million people worldwide die by suicide each year. 32,000 of these deaths occur in the United States. Strikingly, that number is miniscule in comparison to the 300,000 additionally recorded and 775,000 estimated non fatal attempts in that same year's time (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008; Maris, Berman & Silverman, 2000). The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a relationship between acculturation and utilization of mental health services among U.S. born and non-U.S. born Hispanics in the United States. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to identify factors, which lead U.S. born and non -U.S. born Hispanics to seek and utilize mental health services. Findings suggest that there is no relationship between acculturation and the utilization of mental health services. A lack of resistance may be due to a need of education on mental health illnesses.

Several studies have been conducted to investigate risk factors for adolescent suicide. Most adolescent risk models for suicide contain "traditional" risk factors such as depression or substance use. The use of homework assignments is considered an integral part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Although homework adherence has been shown to contribute to treatment outcome for depression, little research has been conducted which successfully identifies therapist characteristics which may facilitate homework adherence. It is highly suggested by researchers, authors and government entities that schools involve community organizations in school safety planning and the development of safety strategies. However, there are no known studies suggesting the effectiveness of this involvement. This study investigated community organizations involvement in school safety planning as a predictor of serious violent incidents using a regression analysis. In block one, law enforcement involvement in school safety planning was the only significant predictor of serious violent incidents (p < .05). Law enforcement organizations had showed a negative relationship with serious violent incidents (t= -2.994). When law enforcement organizations were involved in school safety planning, there were lower numbers of serious violent incidents. In block two, when adding school characteristics (size, location and racial distribution) to the model, law enforcement involvement continues to be a significant predictor of serious violent incidents (p < .05) and still having a negative relationship (t = -2.058). School size (t = 7.736, p < .01), school location (t= -3.386, p < .01) and racial distribution (t = 4.125, p < .01) were also significant predictors of serious violent incidents. In block three of the regression model, violence prevention and intervention variables were added. The results of this analysis shows that law enforcement is no longer a significant predictor of violence (t= -1.829, p > .05). In this model it can be seen that prevention variables related to student surveillance was a significant predictor of serious violence …

In 2004 the city of Dallas police department reported that among violent crimes, family violence was second only to assault in occurrence. This trend is observed throughout Dallas County, which is the focus of this exploratory study. The data consist of 904 family violence cases drawn from disposed felony family violence cases processed through the district attorney's office in 2006. We employed, geographic information systems, and bivariate and multivariate analysis to explore influences of family violence victims and the district attorney advocates on court outcomes. The researcher conducted an online survey through social networking sites to identify coping processes utilized by first responders responding to a Community Traumatic Event (CTE) and to identify beneficial supportive services. The majority of participants utilized positive coping styles with "positive reappraisal" being the most common type of coping used. Debriefing was found to be the most commonly used supportive service and was helpful for the majority of participants who used it. Studies done on the association of smoking and depression found inconclusive results in the direction of the association. The present study utilized public data from the Add Health to examine the associations between depressive symptoms and smoking concurrently and prospectively in adolescents, predictors of current smoking, and associations between concurrent depressive levels and smoking cessation status. The results indicate depressive symptoms promote concurrent and prospective smoking behavior. Higher levels of depressive symptoms at Wave I was characteristic of participants who smoked in the past and smoked regular.
