Rhino Earth Tiller Test Report: Area Reduction In Mixed Minefields, Christopher Wanner
Rhino Earth Tiller Test Report: Area Reduction In Mixed Minefields, Christopher Wanner
Global CWD Repository
The Rhino is a tracked tilling vehicle custom designed and built from the ground up. The working tiller consists of two horizontal drums, stacked one overtop of the other. The drums are studded with commercially available, asphalt shredding chisels. The lower drum counter rotates against the direction of vehicle travel, excavating soil and objects from burial depths of 25 – 35 centimeters. The excavated soil and constituent objects are carried up the face of the lower, digging drum and into the 1 to 5 centimeter gap between the lower and upper drums. The chisels on the two drums mesh with …

A Study Of The Benefits Of U.S. Military-To-Military Cooperation In Humanitarian Demining, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
The United States (U.S.) Department of Defense (DoD) Humanitarian Demining Programme has four explicit goals:
1. TO ASSIST HOST NATIONS IN ESTABLISHING LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE, INDIGENOUS HUMANITARIAN DEMINING PROGRAMMES;
2. TO EXPLOIT THE SYNERGISM BETWEEN THE DOD HUMANITARIAN DEMINING PROGRAMME AND OTHER SIMILAR INTERNATIONAL, REGIONAL AND U.S. EFFORTS;
3. TO ESTABLISH A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO PROVIDING THE APPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT, TECHNICAL DATA, AND OTHER SUPPORT TO CONDUCT MINE AWARENESS AND MINE CLEARANCE TRAINING PROGRAMMES AND, WHENEVER POSSIBLE, EQUIPMENT FOR NEWLY TRAINED PERSONNEL TO THE FIELD; AND
4. TO SUPPORT U.S. FOREIGN POLICY AND SECURITY INTERESTS.

[The Victim] then excavated around the front and right hand side of the rock using his right hand, nothing being located. As it would have been difficult to excavate around the left hand side of the rock using his right hand he swapped hands and started to excavate using his left hand, (something that [the Victim] regularly does). [the Victim] had excavated approximately 15 cms in depth when there was an uncontrolled detonation.

Details of this accident have been withheld by the demining NGO that employed the Victim. A spreadsheet including the Victim’s name and very brief details of the accident was made available in 2007. Some details can be inferred from the information released. For example, the injury implies that the victim’s visor was not being worn in the correct manner, and the loss of one eye and severe injury to the other implies a severe facial injury.

A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of Frequency Domain Metal Detectors For Humanitarian Demining, Claudio Bruschini
A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of Frequency Domain Metal Detectors For Humanitarian Demining, Claudio Bruschini
Global CWD Repository
This thesis details an analysis of metal detectors (low frequency electromagnetic induction devices) with emphasis on Frequency Domain (FD) systems and the operational conditions of interest to humanitarian demining.
After an initial look at humanitarian demining and a review of their basic principles we turn our attention to electromagnetic induction modelling and to analytical solutions to some basic FD direct (forward) problems. The second half of the thesis focuses then on the analysis of an extensive amount of experimental data. The possibility of target classification is first discussed on a qualitative basis, then quantitatively. Finally, we discuss shape and size …

have affected this area to a large scale, as it was frontline between Taliban and Northern Alliance during the past few years. The survey operation is also in progress in the neighbouring remaining areas to be technically marked and mapped for clearance teams. On 1st September 2002 an accident occurred in the survey team that involved a surveyor. The operations of team No.3 was stopped, all deminers were ordered to get to the rest area and be prepared to assist [NGO-1] in their rescue operation.
The dead body of the surveyor was thrown into the minefield so two deminers cleared …

This report sets out some ideas for scoping the contamination problem in Lao PDR and suggests ways by which priority areas could be identified. This leads to means by which long, medium and short term strategic action plans could be developed and an exit strategy for international assistance established. This report then identifies two options for reconstructuring the UXO program that address stakeholder concerns.

By the end of 2002, the United States will have provided more than $600,000,000 to 43 countries, as well as to northwest Somalia, for various humanitarian demining efforts, such as deminer training, mine awareness and mine clearance, orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. More than $100,000,000 of this total was spent in Fiscal Year 2002, one of the largest commitments of any nation involved in financing humanitarian demining activities.
The goals of the U.S. Humanitarian Demining Program are simple and direct: to reduce the loss of life and limb of innocents; to …

The Cambodia Mine/UXO Victim Information System (CMVIS) is an organisation of the Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) and Handicap International (HI) established to provide the continuous and systematic collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information about mine and UXO casualties in Cambodia.
This evaluation of the CMVIS was conducted by an external consultant, Steven Mellor, during September 2002 under the supervision and at the request of Handicap International Belgium. The evaluation is to assist in strengthening the database functions of CMVIS; identify areas that could be improved within the system of data entry through to the output of monthly and specialised …

These drills had been repeated two to three times already to the time of accident occurred. Mr. [name excised], the victim's peer, told that he found deminer no. 1 removed the cut salvages once then the second time and then he heard an explosion and found [the victim] falling backward into the cleared area. The demining pair were clearing a lane as a team with one doing the detection and the other clearing the vegetation. The pair had just changed around after detection. The victim moved to the top of the clearance lane to re-position the red string lines and begin clearing vegetation and spoil from the next part of the lane prior to detection. As the victim bent down to position the stakes with the red string attached, he stood on a mine with his left foot on the cleared left hand side of the lane. When the mine exploded, the victim’s partner …

This study objectives were to further develop definitions and lend support to an operational policy regarding mine victim assistance and integrated mine action. It is also intended to contribute to the formulation of coherent and comprehensive mine action programmes involving integrated victim assistance and in such, strengthen the role of the United Nations as the leaders in both policy and co-ordination for all mine-related activities.

Towards A Better Mine Action Programme: Master Of Science Dissertation, Tim Lardner
Global CWD Repository
This dissertation sets out to assess how the global community has dealt with landmines and the damage they are having on the population. The study analyses the development of two programmes in particular in Cambodia and Mozambique - and then considers the influences that culture and organisational structure have on those organisations. Taking these lessons, the study analyses the best methods of implementation and recommends a number of areas worthy of consideration in the development of future mine action organisations.

Once prepared to load the fuzes, Deminer [C] ordered Deminer [D, the victim] to pass him the fuzes from the ground sheet, to the vehicle where he was going to put them in the team detonator box. Deminer [the victim] picked up all 3 x fuzes and laid them on the palm of his left hand, he then handed the first fuze to Deminer [C] who in turn placed the fuze into the detonator box. There was an uncontrolled detonation of an Israeli No4 Anti Personnel mine fuze.

The Severe Duty Vegetation Shredder (SDVS) is designed to safely remove this obstacle to demining by opening up the general accessibility of a mined area, reducing the impediments to sweeping with hand held mine detectors, improving the deminer’s visibility of the threat, reducing the risk to the deminer by eliminating the hazardous process of going into the minefield on foot to clear brush, and by reducing the need for hauling away residual cut vegetation. The SDVS was designed and built by Israel Aircraft Industries Ramta Division. The prototype unit was delivered in December 2001 and a variety of tests were …
