When asked to discuss the humanitarian tragedy in the DRC, the question really is where to start? The article by Adam Hochschild discusses some of the most horrific events and experiences imaginable: widespread killings of unarmed civilians, rape, torture and looting, the recruitment of child soldiers, and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. The immediate human response is who is to blame, how did it happen and how can the world apparently do nothing?

The ongoing tragedy in Eastern Congo contains so many tragic lessons that it should shake to their very foundations all comfortable ideologies about human rights and politics. The atrocities in the DRC should implicate all but have so far resulted in almost limitless impunity. Here, I briefly put human rights law on trial for its role in perpetuating this tragedy.

Nevertheless, SS is not a term agreed upon inpractice by policymakers, researchers, or service providersand is frequently used without a clear common definition.In this sense, the purpose of this study is to explore the extentto which the top-down definition of ‘economic’ SS as thesocial policy goal is consistent with how the clients of job training programs perceive the term. Yellowstone National Park Visitors: A Seasonal Analysis, Christine Oschell

This report is part of a series that examines visitors in gateway communities of both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks with the purpose of understanding the lifestyle, habits, values, demographics and travel characteristics of visitors to the parks. This report details only the results of Yellowstone visitors and presents the results by the season in which the visitors were intercepted (spring, summer and fall, 2008). The findings suggest that visitors to Yellowstone do not differ significantly, regardless of season of visitation, in their lifestyles, habits, preferred experiences or values.

Public housing in Chicago, like many cities nationwide, has a history of poverty, crime, and disinvestments. In 1992 the HOPE VI program was created to change the development path of these neighborhoods. The objective of the program is to deconcentrate poverty and enrich prospects for gentrification and urban renewal in targeted neighborhoods by tearing down and replacing project-based public housing with mixed-income apartments. In the process condominium developments often arise on empty parcels of land that further accelerate neighborhood gentrification. Cakupan pelayanan kebidanan program Jaminan Pelayanan Kesehatan Masyarakat Miskin (JPKMM) di Kabupaten Aceh Selatan tahun 2006 yang belum mencapai target mengindikasikan kinerja bidan di desa dalam pelayanan kebidanan program JPKMM masih rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui kinerja bidan desa dan faktor-faktor yang berhubungan. Kinerja bidan desa diukur dengan melihat cakupan pelayanan kebidanan program JPKMM meliputi cakupan pemeriksaan kehamilan minimal 4 kali dan cakupan pertolongan persalinan. Disain penelitian yang digunakan adalah cross sectional dengan populasi seluruh bidan desa yang bertugas di Kabupaten Aceh Selatan tahun 2007. Kepuasan pasien ternyata tidak selalu meningkatkan kunjungan pasien di fasilitas pelayanan kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui hubungan kepuasan pasien dengan jumlah kunjungan di rumah sakit. Penelitian ini menggunakan data primer survei pelayanan di rawat jalan dan rawat inap selama 9 periode pengukuran pada 2007 – 2009 dan data sekunder kunjungan rumah sakit pada periode yang sama, jumlah sampel adalah 125 pasien per periode yang diambil dengan metoda stratified random sampling. In response to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, state departments of education, including the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), established rules to define a “highly qualified” teacher (HQT). While the spirit of this provision is clear and reasonable, the devil is, of course, in the details. That is, what exactly does highly qualified mean? Initial surveying and resurveying of areas contaminated with mines are imperative processes in the Land Cancellation and Release process in Tajikistan, where estimates indicate thousands of acres of Suspected Hazardous Areas. Even with limited funds, the Tajikistan Mine Action Centre has made great efforts to release the land and promote mine-risk education, victim assistance, and capacity building.

Mozambique’s national program for land release has cleared many Suspected Hazardous Areas in the past eight years, but the Instituto Nacional de Desminagem (National Demining Institute) aims to make the program even more effective. In March 2009, IND collaborated with the Survey Action Center to host a workshop at which land release terminology and concepts were discussed, hoping that improved survey methodologies would lead to a more efficient land-release process. The workshop resulted in the creation of national land-release draft elements and criteria that will help to develop practical land-release standards in the near future.
