Truck Driver Turnover: An Internal Marketing Perspective, Susan Lee Taylor, Robert M. Cosenza

Journal of Transportation Management

Carriers and industry analysts agree that driver turnover is the largest problem facingthe industry today. Truck drivers regularly move from one trucking company to another or they change to careers out of the industry. Opinions for high driver turnover are diverse, such as long hours and extended time away from home, poor advancement opportunities, a lack of respect, and old/uncomfortable equipment. In this article the authors examine the truck driver turnover problem from an internal marketing perspective. Membership, socialization, identity, structural, interpersonal, and environmental issues are examined as primary influences on desired quality of truck driver employment. Suggestions are made …

The success of state efforts to control rising health care costs depends on the incentives contained in the legislative design of regulatory policies and in the administrative capacity and autonomy of state agencies. States have regulated the construction and expansion of health care facilities and services for more that two decades through “certificate of need” (CON) programs designed to limit the diffusion of expensive new medical technologies and to avoid the duplication of health care facilities. Do high performing schools use resources differently than low performing schools? What are the connections between K-12 school funding and academic performance? Today several states (e.g., Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, etc.) are exploring answers to these questions as they attempt to fund schools adequately and in more efficient ways. The purposes of this study were (a) to determine if information about AIDS taught using two different formats, lecture discussion and video discussion, results in differential retention of content about AIDS; (b) to determine if health care beliefs about AIDS change after exposure to a lecture or a video about AIDS among first year nursing students in rural community colleges; and (c) to examine whether the differences in intentions to provide care for AIDS patients are associated with health care beliefs about AIDS. This study explores the career advancement experiences of African American women who have successfully broken through the glass ceiling. The term “glass ceiling” refers to artificial or invisible barriers based on attitudinal or organizational bias that prevent qualified women and minorities from advancing into senior-level management positions. Studies have confirmed that a glass ceiling does exist for African American women and that they are severely underrepresented in top level government jobs, they have less opportunity for advancement, and both gender and race are perceived as factors in their limited representation (MSPB 1992).

Union Pacific/Southern Pacific Merger: Impact On Shippers, Paul D. Larson, H Barry Spraggins

In the Summer of ‘96, Union Pacific Railroad merged with Southern Pacific to create the largest American railroad. Controversy continues to surround the merger. This paper reports results of a recent merger-impact survey. Survey respondents were rail and intermodal shippers. Among the interesting research findings are the following: (1) while shippers report a negative impact due to less rail competition, trackage rights granted to Burlington Northern/Santa Fe have failed to dampen this impact; (2) railroad service has deteriorated, but freight rates have remained stable; and (3) service problems are more severe for rail, as opposed to TOFC/COFC, shippers.

The paper presents a model inspired by the success of innovative logistics programs that have enhanced the relevance of academic programs by developing closer ties with logistics and transportation practitioners. Discussion focuses on examples that illustrate implementation of the model. The intent is to provide a blueprint for academics to enhance cooperation at locations that do not currently have such programs in place.

An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson

The purpose of this study is to investigate certain aspects of a transportation choice model proposed by Krapfel and Mentzer (1982) pertaining to the influence of shipper perceptions on the selection of a mode. Specifically, this study attempts to identify the impact that shipper perceptions of intermodal and over-the-road truck service, as well as other characteristics of the shipper, have on intermodal usage. The research findings support the notion that shipper perceptions affect modal usage and indicate areas in which intermodal providers should focus their attention to improve intermodal usage.

Some Propositions Regarding Rail-Truck Intermodal: An Empirical Analysis, Paul R. Murphy, James M. Daley

Journal of Transportation Management

Using data compiled from a recent of businesses located in a major metropolitan area, the present paper evaluates a series of propositions concerning rail-truck intermodal. In general, the study results tend to support the various propositions, and key findings suggest that users and nonusers of intermodal transportation have different perceptions about the quality of, and barriers to, intermodal service.

The information for the directory was collected through interviews with service providers identified by WDN and the Workforce development Board.

This study uses quantitative content analysis, with qualitative elite interviewing as a supplemental tool, to investigate the role of the Daily Press newspaper in creating, framing and fostering the locally controversial issues of regionalism and consolidation on the Virginia Peninsula from 1944-1996.

The investigation supports earlier findings regarding the second-level of Agenda-setting in terms of the newspaper's ability to cumulatively create "the pictures in our heads" of events or issues. The dissertation suggests that by selecting thematically related attributes over time, the newspaper acts to transmit issue salience, but that the potential impact of the "picture in our heads" is …

This study attempts to identify the leadership styles of Virginia prison wardens within public adult prisons, and to determine which factors contribute to the development of their leadership styles. The two instruments used in this study to assess leadership style were the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI, which measures "transformational" leadership), and the Leader Behavior Analysis II Self (LBAII Self, which measures "transactional" leadership). Both instruments have been used in prior research with correctional personnel, and comparisons of this research study is made with previous dissertations utilizing the LPI and LBAII.

The Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), an education and training program to assist the economically disadvantaged, is one of sixty or more programs Congress is considering consolidating. This program had great success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but its value and support have been declining. This author examines whether JTPA should continue through a test of three employment theories: discrimination, signaling, and human investment using data from Maine's JTPA program. Findings indicate that while the program can reduce discriminatory barriers and negative signals such as welfare status, it does not consistently succeed as a training investment. Enrollment in …
