Self-Monitoring Personality At Work Revisited: A Comparative Meta-Analysis, Michael P. Wilmot
Self-Monitoring Personality At Work Revisited: A Comparative Meta-Analysis, Michael P. Wilmot
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The validity of self-monitoring personality in work and organizational settings was reexamined. Comparative meta-analyses using both random-effects and fixed-effects models were conducted (349 total samples; N = 75,811) to test the relationship between self-monitoring personality and work-related and demographic correlates, as well as the reliability of the self-monitoring measures. Contributions were made to the literatures of self-monitoring and meta-analysis. Self-monitoring: Results indicated that self-monitoring related to a number of relevant organizational outcomes, including job effectiveness and success, leadership, and ingratiation. Some results ran contrary to the prior meta-analysis (Day, Shleicher, Unckless, & Hiller, 2002). Meaningful differences were found between the …
Age And Education Differences In Superior-Subordinate Dyads: Testing Relational Norms And Attraction Similarity Influences On Role Ambiguity, Affect, And Communication Satisfaction, Alexander Andrew Nedilskyj
Age And Education Differences In Superior-Subordinate Dyads: Testing Relational Norms And Attraction Similarity Influences On Role Ambiguity, Affect, And Communication Satisfaction, Alexander Andrew Nedilskyj
Theses Digitization Project
The primary purpose of this study was to examine superior-subordinate dyads which violate relational norms and produce status inconsistency. Specifically, within the context of supervisor age and education, occupational norms suggest that employees expect their supervisor to be older and have a higher level of education. In the face of growing demographic diversity, more emphasis is being placed on superiors to build skills to effectively interact with a heterogeneous set of employees. This study proposed to test whether superior-subordinate dyads which are diverse in terms of age and education, influence employees' attitudes towards their supervisor, the satisfaction with the communication …

Promoting Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Through High Involvement Human Resource Practices And Organizational Justice Among Hotel Frontline Employees In Malaysia : An Attempt To Reduce Turnover Intention., Wee Yu Ghee
Student Works (2010-2019)
Acknowledging the need to pool human capital in the light of strong relational infrastructure so as to increase employees retention, this study examines the possibility of inducing organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) through human resource (HR) philosophy embraced by the organizations, high involvement HR practices and organizational justice administered at the workplace. Two bases which form the relational infrastructure, namely leader-member exchange and trust in supervisor are posited to be potential mediators. Based on the social exchange theory, an integrated model with three sets of predicting variables (human resource philosophy, high involvement human resource practices and organization justice), two mediating variables …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of A Pilot Training Program In An Organizational Setting: An Intervention For Work Engagement, John Joseph Kmiec Jr.
Dissertations
This study measured the effects of a learning intervention designed to enhance the capabilities of immediate managers to increase the level of work engagement in line employees at a small manufacturing firm in south Mississippi. The study answered the call of researchers to investigate the impact of innovative management practices on work engagement (Bakker, Schaufeli, Leiter, & Taris, 2008). The firm’s Production business unit managers participated in a 90-day learning program based on five skills outlined by Flagello and Dugas (2009); the Maintenance business unit managers did not participate in the learning. At three intervals during the intervention, the researcher …

Family Organization (F-O) fit was proposed as an extension on Person-Organization (P-O) fit, while also drawing from the work and family literature. A scale was created to measure F-O fit, and it consisted of complementary and supplementary items.
Proactive Behavior: A Selection Perspective, Laura Elizabeth Marler
Proactive Behavior: A Selection Perspective, Laura Elizabeth Marler
Doctoral Dissertations
In the 15 years since Bateman and Crant (1993) formulated the construct of proactive personality, numerous researchers have devoted a significant amount of attention to proactive attributes and behaviors (e.g., Parker, Williams, & Turner, 2006; Crant, 2000; Frese & Fay, 2001; Parker, 2000; Erdogan & Bauer, 2005). Campbell's (1990) model of performance suggests that an organization's selection system may ultimately promote proactive behavior. Consequently, in this dissertation, I advocate a selection approach as the initial building block towards creating a workplace in which proactive behavior is a fundamental outcome.
One of the selection tools yet to be explored by researchers …
Moderators Of The Relationship Between The Quality Of Leader-Member Exchange Relationship (Lm) And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (Ocb), Jennifer Anne Lee
Moderators Of The Relationship Between The Quality Of Leader-Member Exchange Relationship (Lm) And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (Ocb), Jennifer Anne Lee
Theses Digitization Project
There have been many theories that have examined how leaders can be effective within an organization. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not personality would strengthen or weaken the relationship between the quality of one's relationship with their leader (LMX) and performance outcomes (OCB). Personality did not act as a moderator. In order to test this, 127 participants of both men and women from various organizational and educational backgrounds were surveyed.
Police Stress, Dennis J. Stevens
Police Stress, Dennis J. Stevens
Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications
This entry defines police officer stress and describes its consequences, origins, and the individual and organizational methods to control it. Controlling stress can enhance the delivery of police services and guide officers toward healthy lifestyles. One definition of stress is the wear and tear our bodies and minds experience as we react to physiological, psychological, and environmental changes throughout our lives. It is a nonspecific response of the body to a demand for change. Its centerpiece is the relationship between an external event and an internal response: For every action, there’s a reaction.

Applicants may be more motivated to fake than incumbents and may fake more on some items than others. The present study investigated both item and person characteristics as predictors of faking. At the item level, both item transparency and job-relevance were hypothesized to be associated with higher levels of faking. In contrast, item verifiability was hypothesized to be associated with lower levels of faking. At the person level, applicants were expected to have a higher prevalence of faking than incumbents. Data was taken from an existing pool of applicants (n = 507) and incumbents (n = 302) at a customer …

Internal Psychological States In A Diverse Work Environment, Vincent Valdez Cordero
Internal Psychological States In A Diverse Work Environment, Vincent Valdez Cordero
Theses Digitization Project
The study examined the internal states (self-esteem and ethnic identity) that may affect individuals in a diverse work environment and lead to conflict. In particular it was expected that ethnic identity and self-esteem would mediate the relationship between diversity and conflict. Participants from a wide variety of organizations in Southern California completed an online survey. Statistical analyses revealed that self-esteem and ethnic identity did not mediate the relationship between diversity and conflict. However, many of the variables were significantly related to each other. Implications of the findings are discussed.
Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Emergence, Gilma Yannet Anderson
Emotional Intelligence And Leadership Emergence, Gilma Yannet Anderson
Theses Digitization Project
The study looked at how emotional intelligence helps leaders meet the needs of their team. In order to be successful, teams need to exist in an environment that is burn-out preventative and fosters creativity. It was hypothesized that leaders would help meet these needs by creating an unthreatening work environment. Data was gathered from 391 individuals working in existing self-managed work teams in private and public sectors. The hypothesized model was tested using a multilevel analysis approach of structural equation modeling. Results indicated that a leader's emotional intelligence predicts a non-threatening work environment for both between and within teams, thus …

The Effects Of Participative Safety And Support For Innovation On Group Creativity, Toshio Murase
Theses Digitization Project
This study examined the effects of Participative Safety (PS) and Support for Innovation (SI) on team creativity. It has been proposed that PS helps develop teamwork processes where members feel comfortable expressing and exchanging their ideas freely and SI makes a team perceive that creativity is valued. The study hypothesized that groups trained on PS score higher on creativity, feel less anxiety, have more cohesiveness, and have higher satisfaction than groups without PS training. The study also hypothesized that groups in the SI condition score higher on originality than groups in the non-SI condition. These climate conditions were created by …

A Factor Analytic Comparison Of The Work Values Of Divergent Groups, Janette A. Hankins
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A new concept in motivation has recently been devised: that of work values. The Work Values Inventory (WVI) developed by Donald E. Super (1970) was used to test five hypotheses:
(1) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to age;
(2) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to sex;
(3) The underlying work value structures of persons will vary according to level (undergraduate, master's degree students, or post-master's degree);
(4) The underlying work value structures of college students will vary according to whether they are a psychology major or not;
(5) …
