Applicant Perceptions Of Selection Procedures: The Role Of Selection Information, Belief In Tests, And Comparative Anxiety, Filip Lievens, Wilfried De Corte, Katrien Brysse

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study addresses the effects of the provision of information on the reliability and validity of selection procedures and the effects of test-taker attitudes (i.e., belief in tests and comparative anxiety) on fairness perceptions. Prior to an actual selection process, applicants (N = 118) were given either information about the reliability and validity of various selection procedures or no information. Next, they evaluated the fairness of eight selection procedures. No significant effect of selection information was found. Belief in tests had significant effects, with applicants high on test belief giving higher fairness ratings than applicants low on test belief. In …

Does Nationality Affect Job Satisfaction?, Furqan Qamar, Talal Al Junaibi Dec 2002

Does Nationality Affect Job Satisfaction?, Furqan Qamar, Talal Al Junaibi

IIMB Management Review

Job satisfaction and the factors that contribute to it are well-researched phenomena. Despite this, however, theories of job satisfaction are still not well perfected. Research in the field falls into five categories based on the causes of satisfaction they seek to establish: need fulfilment models, discrepancy models, value attainment models, equity models and trait component models. The last category includes studies that investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and the cultural and ethnic background of employees. Studies in this area report contradictory findings. Furqan Qamar and Talal Al Junaibi survey the literature and find that though several studies have been …

Predicting Team Performance Over Time: A Secondary Data Analysis, Hope S. Hanner Oct 2002

Predicting Team Performance Over Time: A Secondary Data Analysis, Hope S. Hanner

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Teams occupy a strong presence in the modern workplace. However, few studies have tracked the evolution of team behavior over time. The use of cross-sectional team research fails to appreciate the stages that teams pass through as they evolve and mature. The present study had three goals in mind. The first goal was to arrive at a causal model of team performance via a secondary statistical analysis on the research conducted by Cunningham (2001) and Strobel (2001). Strobe1 and Cunningham tracked the performance of eleven student-learning teams over the course of a semester. A team training intervention was administered after …

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher Oct 2002

The Effects Of Communication Modality On Teamwork Processes, Thomas D. Fletcher

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Since the onset of the digital age, organizations have been able to make use of teams of individuals distributed geographically to remain competitive. While strides have been made to understand the effectiveness of collocated teams, research has yet to sufficiently explore the effects of emerging technologies on team processes and effectiveness. A laboratory study, where dyads were asked to create a spreadsheet by following a set of explicit instructions (i.e., a psychomotor task), was conducted to manipulate the communication modalities most commonly used between collaborators (i.e., face-to-face vs. audio) and compare the effects of adding a shared workspace application. The …

Trying To Understand The Different Pieces Of The Construct Validity Puzzle Of Assessment Centers: An Examination Of Assessor And Assessee Effects, Filip Lievens Aug 2002

Trying To Understand The Different Pieces Of The Construct Validity Puzzle Of Assessment Centers: An Examination Of Assessor And Assessee Effects, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined the effects of assessor-related factors (i.e., type of assessor) and assessee-related factors (i.e., type of assessee profile) on the construct validity of assessment center ratings. In particular, 3 types of assessors (26 industrial/organizational [I/O] psychologists, 20 managers, and 27 students), rated assessee performances that varied according to cross-exercise consistency (i.e., relatively inconsistent vs. relatively consistent) and dimension differentiation (relatively undifferentiated vs. relatively differentiated). Construct validity evidence was established for only one assessee profile and only in the I/O psychologist and managerial samples. More generally, these results indicate that 3 factors (poor design, assessor unreliability, and especially cross-situational …

Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas Jul 2002

Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Although authorities advocate breastfeeding for at least six months as the ideal form of infant nutrition, employed mothers may experience barriers to breastfeeding. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study examined the relationship between maternal employment, workplace support, and breastfeeding duration. In general, it was predicted that paid employment following childbirth would have a negative impact on breastfeeding duration. In addition, existence of workplace support such as flexibility, childcare, and/or healthcare benefits was predicted to positively impact breastfeeding durations as well as job satisfaction upon returning to work. Hierarchical linear regression analysis offered support for some …

Creating Inclusive Organizations: Its Meaning And Measurement, Bryan Christopher Hayes Jul 2002

Creating Inclusive Organizations: Its Meaning And Measurement, Bryan Christopher Hayes

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is growing interest in the concept of inclusion by both scientists and practitioners. The goal of the current study was to bring empirical support to the organizational inclusion literature. Inclusion was defined as a psychosocial need and a model was developed specifying its relationship to antecedent and consequence variables. The measurement model was explored with a sample of responses from 418 undergraduate students (Study 1). The measurement model was confirmed and the structural model was assessed with a sample of responses from 609 employees of a medical center (Study 2). Results of structural equation modeling provided limited support for …

Qualities And Competencies Needed For Successful Overseas Posting : The Views Of Malaysian Expatriates, Mohd Radzuan Rahid

Student Works (2000-2009)

In the era of globalization where of multinationals and transnational companies have their international operations spread all over the world, the area of international human resource management (IHRM) has becoming more and more important. Human factor is now considered as an important aspect in determining the success of international operations. Scholars, like Adler and Bartholomew (1992) agreed that in order to ensure the success implementation of global strategies, it would largely depend on getting the people with right skills, at the right time, which typically requires the movement of people across border. This study will focus on one of the …

Assessors' Use Of Personality Traits In Descriptions Of Assessment Centre Candidates: A Five-Factor Model Perspective, Filip Lievens, Filip De Fruyt, Karen Van Dam Dec 2001

Assessors' Use Of Personality Traits In Descriptions Of Assessment Centre Candidates: A Five-Factor Model Perspective, Filip Lievens, Filip De Fruyt, Karen Van Dam

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In assessment centres assessors are typically taught to note down behavioural observations. However, previous studies have shown that about 20% of assessor notes contain trait descriptors. Instead of regarding these descriptors as errors, this study examines their position in a personality descriptive taxonomy (i.e. the AB5C taxonomy, see Hofstee, De Raad, & Goldberg, 1992) and relates them to employment recommendations. To this end, assessor notes of 403 assessees (214 men, 189 women; mean age 33 years) were scrutinized for personality descriptors. Results show that assessors, as a group, use descriptors referring to all five personality domains with a preference for …

Dimension And Exercise Variance In Assessment Center Scores: A Large-Scale Evaluation Of Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway Dec 2001

Dimension And Exercise Variance In Assessment Center Scores: A Large-Scale Evaluation Of Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Filip Lievens, James M. Conway

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study addresses 3 questions regarding assessment center construct validity: (a) Are assessment center ratings best thought of is reflecting dimension constructs (dimension model). exercises (exercise model). or a combination? (b) To what extent do dimensions or exercises account for variance? (c) Which design characteristics increase dimension variance? To this end, a large set of multitrait-multimethod studies (N = 34) were analyzed, showing that assessment center ratings were best represented (i.e., in terms of fit and admissible solutions) by a model with correlated dimensions and exercises specified a correlated uniquenesses. In this model, dimension variance equals exercise variance. Significantly more …

The Influence Of Affective State And Social Loafing On Teams Over Time, Amy N. Cunningham

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Teams are a growing force in the workplace today. An interesting aspect of team research in recent years involves the maturation of teams over time and the processes teams go through as a novice team to a fully accomplished performing team. One impediment to team maturation and performance is social loafing. There were two goals in the present research and are presented in the following questions. First, do team members' effective states influence social loafing? Second, does team training affect affective state of team members, social loafing, and performance? These variables were investigated, using an interrupted time series design, as …

The Effects Of Cultural Values On Acceptance Of Human Resource Management Decisions, Ying Liu Oct 2001

The Effects Of Cultural Values On Acceptance Of Human Resource Management Decisions, Ying Liu

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of six culture values, including Hofstede's (1984, 1991) power distance, individualism/collectivism, long-term and short-term orientation, Trompenaars'1994) achievement/ascription, universalism/particularism, and relationship to nature, on reactions to human resource management decisions. Data were collected from 110 Chinese students in China and 82 American students in the U.S. A questionnaire containing vignettes depicting different human resource management practices was used to measure the impact of cultural values. Omnibus multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant differences between Chinese and Americans on the cultural values of power distance, collectivism/individualism, long-term and short term orientation, ascription/achievement, and the relationship to …

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson May 2001

How Does The Retail Clerk Make Sense Of His Environment, Tyler L. Watson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The retail clerk is a common feature of today's society. However, the role of the retail clerk has been largely overlooked from the sociological perspective. More precisely from the ethnomethodological perspective. Currently most of the body of research on the retail clerk is from the business perspective and sheds little light on what it is like to be a retail clerk. This study was designed to gain access to the other side of the retail scene, that is, the side of the retail clerk. Most Americans are already familiar with the store but do not know how things are experienced …

Assessors And Use Of Assessment Centre Dimensions: A Fresh Look At A Troubling Issue, Filip Lievens May 2001

Assessors And Use Of Assessment Centre Dimensions: A Fresh Look At A Troubling Issue, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Previous studies on the construct validity of assessment centres have generally produced puzzling results. The premise of this study is that these prior studies were relatively one-sided. Actually, most previous studies were field studies, which typically used the multitrait-multimethod approach to distinguish between two sources of variance (i.e., exercises and dimensions). Therefore, this study aims to shed light on the issue of assessment centre construct validity by addressing substantive and methodological concerns inherent in previous research. In this study, 85 industrial and organizational psychology students and 39 managers rated videotaped assessment centre candidates in three exercises on six dimensions. Results …

The Effects Of Equal Opportunity Fairness And Diversity On Work Group Efficacy, Job Satisfaction, And Organizational Commitment In The Military: A Test Of Structural Invariance, Nancy P. Emery

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test the invariance of a structural equation model of equal opportunity fairness (EOF) in the U.S. military across ethnic and gender groups. Military Equal Opportunity Climate Survey (MEOCS) data drawn from four distinct sociocultural groups in the military were tested on a model that fit the MEOCS data drawn from a sample of White men. A series of multi-group analyses was conducted on the established structural model using LISREL 8 (Joreskog & Sorbom, 1996) to determine whether data from sociocultural groups other than White males would fit a White male model. Further …

This study had two primary goals: to develop a questionnaire that can be used to determine what types and categories of attire are acceptable in today’s work environment for men and women and to provide a preliminary test of whether these policies impact work attitudes and behavior. Because of the lack of past theory and research to guide the project, human resource professionals were interviewed to help generate ideas for questionnaire design. Once developed, this questionnaire was completed by 95 students, most of whom worked full- or part-time. Analyses revealed that there are clear trends and categories that can be …

The effect of user attitudes toward the 360-degree feedback system was also assessed. A sample of responses from 255 360-degree feedback system users was collected over a 14-month time period. LISREL was used to test the hypothesized structural model. Overall goodness of fit for the model was poor (using generalized least squares estimates: the Non-Normed Fit Index (NNFI) = .95, Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = .96; Root Mean Square Error of …

The Indian Software Industry: What Makes For Commitment, Abhoy K Ojha Dec 2000

The Indian Software Industry: What Makes For Commitment, Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

The impact of the demographic characteristics of people on their work attitudes and organisational behaviour has been of interest to organisational theorists for a long time. While some studies have examined the impact of demographic characteristics on attitudes and behaviour, others have investigated the impact of the composition of these demographic characteristics on individual attitudes and behaviour, and organisational outcomes. Against the background of these studies, a study was conducted to examine the impact of demographic characteristics of software professionals on their organisational commitment

This book is a comprehensive study of stress and the effect it has on work life. The style of presentation is simple and therefore even a person not familiar with stress and its related theories can follow the text easily. The topic is extremely relevant and important in the context of the current style of living. Competitiveness in the work place has reached an all time high and has left its mark. To managers, this book offers suggestions on how to recognise stress inducing factors and deal with them. But, as Jex himself says, the study of occupational stress is …

Preventing Workplace Violence By Mark Braverman, New Delhi: Sage, 2000., T Ananthachari Dec 2000

Preventing Workplace Violence By Mark Braverman, New Delhi: Sage, 2000., T Ananthachari

IIMB Management Review

The workplace is in many ways the meeting ground for the employer and the employees. It can lead to mutual understanding, trust and a lasting fruitful collaboration to achieve the objectives of the company. On the other hand, it can result in confrontation with all the consequent negative outcomes to follow. It is obvious that one of the basic policies of every organisation should be to forge maximum possible understanding between the two. Even a minor incident, misunderstanding or communication gap between the managerial hierarchy and the individual employee can spark off a situation which could ultimately vitiate the atmosphere …

Employee Commitment: An Overview, Gbolahan Gbadamosi Sep 2000

Employee Commitment: An Overview, Gbolahan Gbadamosi

IIMB Management Review

Organisational commitment continues to be a topical issue in management research and of great relevance to the practising manager. The commitment of employees is obviously an area of interest in human resources management, the assumption being that employee commitment enhances performance and organisational effectiveness. Research findings and literature on organisational commitment provide some pointers and lessons for human resource managers, which would be well worth examining.
