We used left-hemisphere stroke as a model to examine how damage to sensorimotor brain networks impairs vocal auditory feedback processing and control. Individuals with post-stroke aphasia and matched neurotypical control subjects vocalized speech vowel sounds and listened to the playback of their self-produced vocalizations under normal (NAF) and pitch-shifted altered auditory feedback (AAF) while their brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. This dissertation explores mental health clinicians’ experiences and self-identified confidence to identify and treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD. PTSD is a highly prevalent mental health condition that impacts an estimated 24.4 million individuals in the United States (PTSD United, 2019). Complex PTSD has just emerged for the first time with official diagnostic criteria in the publication of the ICD-11 in 2019 for use beginning in January 2022 (WHO, 2019). This investigation employed meta-analysis techniques to examine the relationship between mental toughness and athletic performance. A total of 76 studies were systematically analyzed with 470 correlation coefficients (r_xy) calculated to determine the mean effect. Fifty-five subject and study variables (age, gender, sport, psychometric instrument, and theoretical definition, etc.) were coded for each correlation to assess changes in the magnitude according to these key characteristics noted within the literature. Overall, the total average correlation produced a small effect size of r_xy =.218. Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) often perceive relationship threats more intensely, resulting in increased emotional reactivity. However, this link has never been examined with physiological measures in “real time,” nor has perceived parental rejection ever been investigated as a potential moderator of this link. To fill this gap, the present study induced romantic relationship threat, after which participants completed an emotional reactivity task while electroencephalography data were recorded. This study surveyed patients and providers from two primary care clinics to examine the relationship between provider humility, empathy, and perceived competency and patient satisfaction. Their highly developed olfactory and acoustic senses provide them with a unique non-visual perspective of their physical and social worlds. Environmental changes, such as temporary hypoxia, during the embryonic stage can impair brain development in leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius). We therefore tested whether this early brain damage produces behavioral deficits that persist into adulthood. The organization and kinematic properties of non-visual exploration between normal (n = 14) and hypoxia (n = 3) geckos were compared. Geckos were individually placed on a circular table (diam=91cm) and allowed to explore darkness for 60min while being recorded. The gecko's coordinates were calculated at 5frames/second. COVID-19 and the measures used to curb the pandemic (e.g., lockdowns, isolation) have significantly impacted mental health and well-being. This study sought to investigate the role of companion animals in alleviating stress and improving mental health during the pandemic. In this study, 250 Australian adults completed measures of well-being and life satisfaction, animal dependency, perceived emotional support from animals, and animals’ effect on mood. Employment and living with others were the strongest predictors of positive life satisfaction and well-being, while greater dependency on companion animals for emotional support and companion animals’ negative effects on mood were associated with reduced life …

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to lower heart rate variability (HRV), including measures of vagal tone. Treatments targeting the autonomic nervous system (ANS) have demonstrated efficacy in improving vagal tone, but it is less clear whether similar effects can also be achieved with cognitive therapies. Hypoxic conditions disrupt brain development in many species, but oxygen deprivation may be particularly detrimental to ectotherms such as reptiles. Our preliminary data suggest the brains of embryonic leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are damaged following brief hypoxic conditions in ovo, and these developmental changes are associated with altered exploratory behavior in adulthood. The objective of this study is to understand the effects of such hypoxic conditions neuronally once the geckos have reached adulthood. However, no previous studies have evaluated the neuronal density of navigation-related brain regions in normal adult geckos, or whether these regions are sensitive to early hypoxia. Here, …
