The Rohingya: Ethnic Nationalism, Domestic Diversionary Targets, And Burmese Post-Colonial Nation Building, Ibrahim Abd-El-Barr

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the question of whether recurring episodes of violence, forced displacement, and other forms of repression against the ethno-religious sub-nationalist identity group, the Rohingya, across Burma's (Myanmar) modern history, are rooted in the implications of post-colonial nation-building or represent independent and self-contained incidents of communal/ethnic violence. The sub-question of whether the modern construct of the Burmese state accurately fits the description of a modern nation-state or whether other paradigms or ideal types better capture the development of the post-colonial Burmese state, is also explored. By revisiting the main events/national framework which have amounted to the Rohingya's exclusion from …

Egypt And The Middle East, Magda Shahin Mar 2018

Egypt And The Middle East, Magda Shahin

Faculty Book Chapters

In the early days of his presidency, Donald Trump has rolled out the red carpet for Arab leaders and reaffirmed the traditional U.S. privileging of alliances over human rights narratives, two decisions which radically differed from the Obama administration. Despite these developments, which regional leaders welcomed, Trump’s failure to articulate a comprehensive strategy to defeat ISIS and his preference for military might over diplomacy have caused concerns. While it is clear the U.S. has re-exerted itself in the Middle East, much of the Arab population (and their leaders) remain perplexed as to the Washington’s plans for the region. That Trump …

Cairo Debates: Understanding Arab-American Relations, Magda Shahin Jan 2018

Cairo Debates: Understanding Arab-American Relations, Magda Shahin

Faculty Journal Articles

Since the 1940s, the relationship with the Arab World has been an integral aspect of U.S. foreign policy, and has played an important role in shaping the interactions between Arab states and the rest of the world. A strong relationship with Egypt has underpinned Washington’s policies, particularly after the 1967 Camp David Accords, and Cairo continues to be an important partner and U.S. ally. As Dr. Mark Miller, the Emma Smith Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware, explained in his lecture, the major tenants of U.S. foreign policy towards the region, namely its …

Arab-U.S. Relations In Perspective, Magda Shahin Jan 2017

Arab-U.S. Relations In Perspective, Magda Shahin

Performances, Events, and Presentations

An enduring relationship between the U.S. and Egypt which extends beyond the military and economic sector will provide both countries with maximum opportunities for mutual gain. It is not exaggerated to say that Egypt today is getting itself back on track and regaining its traditional voice in the region. Nor is it an exaggeration to say the United States will need Egypt’s voice if the Trump Administration wishes to achieve more successful policies in the Arab World. Enhancing the cooperation between the two states rests on Trump’s acknowledgment of the importance of this relationship, which can begin with a successful …

Salafism And Takfirism In Tunisia Between Al-Nahda’S Discourses And Local Peculiarities, Pietro Longo

Faculty Journal Articles

This Working Paper aims at analyzing the discourses about the takfiri movements that rose in Tunisia after the Jasmine revolution. The victory of the Islamist party al-Nahda at the NCA elections in October 2011 provoked concerns about the rise of salafi groups. Between 2011 and 2012 several politicians, businessmen and journalists were accused of kufr by the salafi group Ansar al-Shari‘a. The reaction of Tunisian society was strong and even inside the NCA a debate on the future of takfirism broke out. The discussion between deputes sitting in the NCA ended with the adoption of the Constitutional provision that forbids …

This project provides a comprehensive assessment of the counter-insurgency (COIN) operations being conducted against the Huthis. Specifically, how effective the Arab coalition’s Operation Decisive Storm, Operation Restoring Hope, and Operation Golden Arrow have been in achieving their stated goals and common COIN principles. The 2011 International Security Assistance Forces’ (ISAF) assessment paradigm is used in evaluating four domains of each operation. The four domains are security, governance, socio-economics, and relations-partnerships. The chosen indicators provide enough specificity to create a comprehensive assessment on both operational and campaign levels. The assessments of each operation show that the socio-economic and governance domains need …

Promoting Corporate Intelligence In Italy To Improve Stability In The Middle East, Antonio Giuseppe Di Pietro Jan 2016

Promoting Corporate Intelligence In Italy To Improve Stability In The Middle East, Antonio Giuseppe Di Pietro

Capstone and Graduation Projects

Most national and international legislative instruments impose a duty to conduct appropriate due diligence when doing business, in order to hold each company accountable for the malicious activities of its partners. This project’s main argument is that formal due diligence is not enough when it comes to preventing corrupt business behavior, particularly when dealing with highly corrupt environments. Starting with an analysis of the Italian legislative efforts, this project demonstrates how the promotion of corporate intelligence into standard business practice could fill the gaps left by due diligence. Emphasis is placed upon the adoption of corporate intelligence among SMEs, given …

Evaluation, Coordination And Execution: An Analysis Of Military Coup Agency At Instances Of Successful Coup D’État, Karim El-Baz Oct 2015

Evaluation, Coordination And Execution: An Analysis Of Military Coup Agency At Instances Of Successful Coup D’État, Karim El-Baz

Theses and Dissertations

Theoretically, members of the ground forces are the normal coup plotters as they have sufficient training and equipment to accomplish the objectives of a successful coup. Henceforth, what is quite puzzling is mixed coups. These coups include other officers from other service branches; taking into account, the ability of ground forces to execute the coup without the interference of other service branches. Therefore, the question is why would the coup leader involve those whom he would not tactically need for the coups’ execution. This is only one side of the puzzle that asks why and how a mixed coup agency …

The main question the thesis project aims to answer is: How has the practice of unilateral forcible / military intervention ( …

The Sacred Cow And The New Comer: A Comparative Study Of Nation-State And Umma, Ayat Abdulaty Mohamed Jan 2015

The Sacred Cow And The New Comer: A Comparative Study Of Nation-State And Umma, Ayat Abdulaty Mohamed

Theses and Dissertations

International relations discipline witnessed debates among its mainstream theories. Today the debate worthy of attention is the Western-centrism of the discipline. There is an immense critique of the Westphalian state order, the nation-state, and the absence of religion in IR theory. This research aspires to partially account for the voids of the IR theory. It engages with the debate over the Western-centrism and the loopholes of IRT. This thesis introduces a non-Western contribution to international relations, an Islamic perspective of IR. This thesis argues that for IR discipline to be truly pluralistic and to claim universality it should be opened …

Qatari Foreign Policy And The Arab Spring: From Mediation To Intervention, Basma Mahmoud Eletreby Dec 2014

Qatari Foreign Policy And The Arab Spring: From Mediation To Intervention, Basma Mahmoud Eletreby

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the controversial role that Qatar has been playing in the Arab Spring, specifically from 2011 to 2013. Evidently, Qatari foreign policy will be assessed to comprehend the power this small state has been gaining in Middle East politics in a region plagued by never ending manifestations of power struggles and turbulent developments. The case studies of Egypt, Libya and Syria in which Qatari foreign policy involvement deployed the same rationale will be investigated to examine the increasing involvement of Qatar in Middle East politics. It concludes that the foreign policy of Qatar was both opportunistic and pro-Islamist …

The Egyptian Uprising And April 6th Youth Movement Split, Somaia Metwalli El Sayed Oct 2014

The Egyptian Uprising And April 6th Youth Movement Split, Somaia Metwalli El Sayed

Theses and Dissertations

Few months after the Egyptian uprising, a considerable number of April 6th Youth movement announced their split. Knowing that the movement was already suffering from internal disputes over a number of issues, the research problem is centered on questioning whether and how the uprising played a role in such incident. Academic scholarship on social movements developed partial and action-oriented theories to explain different processes and dynamics of movement’s collective action. However, little work has been done on the trajectory of social movements in the Middle East, especially after radical forms of change as revolutions, uprisings or upheavals. It is argued …

This study is concerned with the spatial transformations taking place in Mohamed Mahmoud that branches from Midan el-Tahrir; the official site of the Egyptian January 25 Revolution. Since the revolution, this street has witnessed a great deal of violence during several bloody clashes between protesters and security forces. It has also become famous for the dissenting graffiti murals wrapping the walls of it entrance. By conducting ethnography of this block of Mohamed Mahmoud Street, my study focuses on the residents and shop owners in the area, who I frame as the graffiti's ‘unintended audience,’ to understand how these spatial and …

From The Forefront To The Sidelines: Youth In Post-Revolution Egypt, Khadiga Omar Oct 2014

From The Forefront To The Sidelines: Youth In Post-Revolution Egypt, Khadiga Omar

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the reasons for the declining role of youth as effective political players since the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. Particularly looking at the “Revolutionary Youth”, this study investigates why their activism over the course of the past four years could not translate into political power that would lead to the realization of the goals of the revolution. Resource Mobilization Theory, Political Opportunity Structure and Framing constitute a tri-lens through which the political experience of the youth is analyzed in this research. This thesis argues that a) the youth’s organizational dilemma; b) their reliance on protest as the exclusive …

Revisiting The Spiral Of Silence In A Social Media Environment: Egypt’S 2014 Presidential Election As A Case Study, Heba T. Saleh Elshahed

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of the Internet and anonymous features of online media, users have established novel platforms to voice their opinion freely without fear of negative feedback. This thesis explores the application of a long-standing public opinion theory– the spiral of silence by Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann–within the prevalent Social Networking Sites (SNS), particularly Facebook. When applying spiral of silence to online mediated environment, it seems intuitive that the lack of verbal cues and anonymity offered would serve to undermine the fear of isolation and restlessness that results in unwillingness to express minority views. This research contributes to understanding how the spiral …

Early Warning Systems For Refugee Crises: Between Ideals And Practice, Dalia El Fiki May 2014

Early Warning Systems For Refugee Crises: Between Ideals And Practice, Dalia El Fiki

Capstone and Graduation Projects

Early warning is often regarded as the solution to complex forced migration questions. The assumption is that if early warning systems are in place, host nations, NGOs and international organizations can prepare for mass influxes. This seemed to be the case with the Turkish government’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis, where Turkey and its local NGOs seemed prepared for the arrival of Syrian refugees and set up a local legislation to accept Syrians and prepared camps swiftly and promptly. On the other hand, the Egyptian government did not have the same degree of planning in order to accept and …

Dutch Media: Pillarization, Multiculturalism, And Cross-Culturalism, Ayman H. Elsherbiny

‘Media and culture’ has been always a topic of interest and study, not only for scholars, but for policy makers and the general public as well. The topic is very broad. It includes defending cultural autonomy in face of the influences of globalized media, in addition to using media as a tool for preserving multiculturalism in societies and for integrating minorities. This paper explores the media system of the Netherlands (the Low Countries), also known as Holland, through the phenomenon of ‘pillarization’ in the media and its development towards ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘cross-culturalism’. Furthermore, it sheds light on the influence of …

Arab Spring Uprisings: Revolutionary Patterns And Theoretical Explanations, Doha Mostafa

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

The paper briefly highlights theoretical explanations of concurrent Arab uprisings through a literature review on the writings of democratization, authoritarianism in the Middle East and third generation insights on the causes of revolutions. Theoretical explanations are supported with empirical evidences from State Fragility, and Transformation Index on the democracy status of eight Arab countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Bahrain, Jordan, Libya, Yemen, and Algeria. The paper seeks to illustrate differences of revolutionary patterns among those countries, how this can be theoretically explained, and how concurrent upheavals would draw a new political map for the region. Through theoretical discussion to Arab uprisings, …
