Meeting The Challenge Of Covid-19: Innovation And Adaptation In Services For Expectant And Parenting Youth In Baltimore, Margo Candelaria, Corey Shdaimah, Jenny Afkinich, Yan (Stella) Zhu
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
To explore perspectives on COVID-19’s impact on access to services for expectant and parenting youth (EPY), qualitative interviews were conducted with seven service providers and two parents. Open coding resulted in three overarching themes. 1. Creativity and adaptation: pride regarding ability to devise necessary modifications. 2. New and ongoing networks: inter-agency collaboration, provider-parent relationships, and parent networks offered material and social support. 3. Communication: varied strategies helped maintain and initiate EPY engagement. In under-resourced environments where providers and EPY must be creative due to scarcity, COVID-19 required that respondents draw on existing networks and strategies to cope with new challenges.

Training Counselors In Clinical Case Formulation: A Proof Of Concept Of The Thematic Mapping Method, Christina E. Jeffrey, Charles Ridley, Nina Quintana, Taylor Parks
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Case formulation, or the way in which clinicians synthesize client information and formulate appropriate treatment directions, is a crucial part of counseling and clinical training. Thematic mapping is a transtheoretical, transdiagnostic strategy of case conceptualization that provides a holistic, complex, multicultural formulation of clients. This proof of concept study evaluated the relationship of a training in the thematic mapping method and case conceptualization quality. Supervisors trained six second-year counselors in the method, along with application to clinical cases, during weekly group supervision. Case formulation complexity, evidence of a systematic approach, level of detail, and goodness-of-fit from client data to synthesized …

Use Of The Integrated Practice Assessment Tool (Ipat) To Evaluate The Clinical Learning Environment For Counselors-In-Training, Jessica Lloyd-Hazlett, Stacy Ogbeide, Heather Trepal, Mercedes Ingram, Swathi Weaver
Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration
The need for behavioral health integration (BHI) in primary care continues to grow to address the behavioral health needs of patients and families. Developing a competent interprofessional workforce to operate in primary care behavioral health settings necessitates BHI-literate clinical learning environments, as well as tools to evaluate and assist in the integration of services appropriate for BHI training and supervision. The Integrated Practice Assessment Tool (IPAT; Waxmonsky et al., 2014) is an instrument that assesses the level of BHI at a primary care clinic. This paper discusses an example of an implementation approach to examine BHI levels with the IPAT …
Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick
Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick
JADARA
Emotional display rules refer to the expression of culturally prescribed and socially acceptable emotions across different people and situations (Wu & Schulz, 2020). The display rules among hearing adults across several cultures are well defined and depend on the type of emotion, the individuals involved in the exchange, and the situation. Regarding Deaf culture in the United States, this minoritized group may follow unique display rules (Hosie et al., 2000), but there has been almost no research conducted with this population and the existing studies have focused on youth. The present study explores perceived emotional expressions among a sample of …

In Kinship With The World: Developing A Novel Instrument To Assess Human-Nature Relational Values, Kimberly Post
In Kinship With The World: Developing A Novel Instrument To Assess Human-Nature Relational Values, Kimberly Post
Educational Studies Dissertations
In the nascent field of human-nature relational values, there is a growing body of literature suggesting their transformative potential in sustainability education. The ability to analytically distinguish relational values from other valuations can both inform pedagogical approaches and help to identify how people understand and value their relationships with the living and more-than-living biospheric inhabitants. To address this need, an overarching question was posited: Can a relational values-specific assessment instrument be designed and validated for use in post-secondary sustainability education? Through a survey of the literature, thematic analysis of validated human-nature connection instruments, and multi-method qualitative research, a pilot instrument …

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the efects of behavioral procedures, including relational training and multiple exemplar training on empathic responding of individuals who display racial bias. In particular, this study used a multielement design with fve adult participants to evaluate whether the presentation of relational frames of coordination and distinction between the participants’ values and the values of a person belonging to a group for which a bias existed altered empathic responses toward people belonging to such groups. The results showed empathic responding was higher when relational frames of coordination were presented and lower when relational …

Segmenting Stakeholders For Effective Extension Education: A Case Study Of Sustainable Forestry Practices, Eli Typhina, Omoyemeh Ile, Robert E. Bardom
Journal of Extension
The article describes a participatory segmentation strategy, called the Actor Diagramming and Tracing Method, that enables Extension agents to tailor education initiatives. Using a case study, the authors demonstrate the method by segmenting North Carolina family forest landowners based on resources needed for sustainable forestry management. Instead of surveying select participants, as previous researchers have, the authors engage a diverse set of stakeholders through interviews, in-situ observations, and diagramming. Three segments emerged with explicit steps to engaging forest owners’ barriers and motivations, as well as a key factor to adoption of sustainable forestry practices: owners’ relationships/social networks.

The entry of foreigners into Indonesia can improve the economy and increase the country's foreign exchange through tourism and investment. However, if the residence permit given to foreign citizens is misused, it could pose various threats to Indonesia's security. Moreover, currently a circular has been issued regarding administrative convenience for foreign investors. For this reason, strong organizational resilience is needed from immigration agencies, especially the South Jakarta Immigration Office so that they can continue to carry out their immigration functions in the face of incoming threats. The aim of this research is to analyze the organizational resilience of the South …

Human rights and sexual violence are major issues in Indonesia, as the former violates victims' human rights and dignity. Situations are made worse by stigma and a lack of security. In addition to examining potential alternatives for creating a future free from sexual violence, this essay looks at Indonesia's link between sexual violence and human rights. The realization of victims' rights is hampered by stigma and a lack of access to rehabilitation services. Human Rights (HAM) are fundamental rights that all people naturally possess since they are gifts from God that are ingrained in all people and need to be …

Cognitive Flexibility And Stability In Bilingual Older Adults, Lia Pazuelo
Cognitive Flexibility And Stability In Bilingual Older Adults, Lia Pazuelo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lifelong bilingual individuals develop expertise in language-switching, requiring a delicate balance between cognitive stability—safeguarding goals from interference—and cognitive flexibility—adapting goals to changing demands. While some studies demonstrate the transferability of these skills to non-linguistic tasks, signifying bilingualism's impact on cognitive processes, others find no direct correlation between non-linguistic task-switching and bilingualism. Our study investigated the cognitive processes underlying bilingual speakers' performance on a switching task, exploring whether varying degrees of bilingual experience in older adults result in different tendencies towards stability (e.g., lower mixing cost and response congruency effect) or flexibility (e.g., smaller switching costs). By treating the bilingual experience …

The highest-achieving figures in politics, business, academia, and the media dominate public discourse and wield great influence in society. Education—perhaps especially at “elite” colleges and universities—may lie at the heart of the divide between the general public and these top achievers. In this paper, we build a new data set for the American “elite” and systematically examine the link between selective schools and outstanding achievements. In Study 1, across 30 different achievement groups totaling 26,198 people, we document patterns of attendance at a set of 34 “Elite” 34 schools, the 8 Ivy League schools, and Harvard University in particular. Principal Agency 50 Years After The Lau Decision: Building And Sustaining Bilingual Education Programs For Asian Languages, Kevin M. Wong, Zhongfeng Tian
Education Division Scholarship
This study examined how three champion principals of Asian language dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs—Cantonese, Korean, and Mandarin—in California have navigated the oscillating language-in-education policies after the Lau decision. We explored principals' various roles through a lens of agency in a social justice leadership framework, specifically considering the opportunities and challenges for agentive leadership from three different phases: foregrounding and engaging, planning and implementing, and evaluating and sustaining. Findings demonstrate that the success of DLBE programs goes beyond the overarching language policies that supposedly enable bilingual education; rather it hinges on the bottom-up commitment, collaboration and resilience of principals, …

Promoting Emergent Literacy In Preschool Through Extended Discourse: Covert Translanguaging In A Mandarin Immersion Environment, Robin E. Harvey, Kevin M. Wong
Education Division Scholarship
Rich oral language practices, including the opportunity and ability to participate in cognitively and linguistically challenging extended discourse, are foundational to early literacy development. To meet children’s needs in their first exposure to the languages of schooling, educators may engage students in extended discourse multilingually. The current study focuses on student-centered translanguaging conversations to examine strategies that preschool teachers employ to support young children’s emerging bilingual and biliteracy development in a Mandarin immersion preschool serving primarily nonheritage learners of Mandarin in the United States. Findings indicate that, despite the school’s Mandarin-only policy, teachers engaged in covert translanguaging practices to extend …
