Spending Today Or Saving For Tomorrow: The Influence Of Family Financial Socialization On Financial Preparation For Retirement, Scott H. Payne, Jeremy B. Yorgason, Jeffrey P. Dew

Faculty Publications

Many of the factors that motivate individuals occur within the context of the family, and can be influenced through family socialization processes. To better understand the influence family socialization processes may have on financial capabilities and financial behaviors, 334 married couples were sampled. Structural equation modeling was used to examine both direct and indirect associations. Findings indicated direct relationships between materialism and financial strain, between religiosity and determination of needs, and between financial strain and saving for retirement. Indirect relationships were found between materialism and saving for retirement through financial strain. Our study found evidence to support the Family Financial …

What Triggers The Augment In Shinyiha?, Devet Goodness Jun 2013

What Triggers The Augment In Shinyiha?, Devet Goodness

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper presents a description of the augment in Shinyiha1. The overall purpose of the study was to investigate the function of the segment that appears before the class prefix of the noun in Shinyiha. Elicitation method was in most cases, in the form of informal discussion. The findings indicate that the occurrence of the augment in Shinyiha is triggered by syntactic contexts. Precisely speaking, the occurrence of the augment is triggered by the type of the construction used. This paper argues that although the function of the augment may be related to definiteness, specificity and topicality, these pragmatic functions …

Using Balanced Learning Course Design To Reduce Resistance To Diversity Curricula, Misty L. Wall Jun 2013

Using Balanced Learning Course Design To Reduce Resistance To Diversity Curricula, Misty L. Wall

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Diversity content is often met with covert and overt resistance in the classroom. Utilisation of a balanced learning model may address classroom resistance. Balanced learning models require ‘backwards’ course planning, equal attention to course content and class process, and a strategic use of cyclical course design to include introduction of new materiel, experience, followed by personal reflection. Using a balanced learning model moves classroom instruction beyond active learning strategies in the classroom, but can present unique challenges for instructors. While not without challenges, utilising a balanced learning model proves useful during course design and delivery of a graduate course on …

A Sociological And Statistical Analysis Of Fraternity Men's Attitudes On Rape And Sexual Assault, Cierra Ensign

Social Sciences

Hostility, aggression, and empathy levels of 488 fraternity men were measured using portions of the Burt Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, Malamuth’s Behavioral Intent to Rape Question, Hostility Toward Women Scale, and Survey Measure of Emotional Empathy. Thirteen out of the fifteen Interfraternity Council (IFC) chapters at a west coast public university campus volunteered to participate in the study. The survey consisted of thirty-five questions aimed at finding a correlation between the respondents housing location, year in school, position of office in his fraternity, and number of siblings and hostility, aggression, and empathy. Although no significant findings relating hostility, aggression, and …

Exploring The Application Of Reconstructability Analysis To Behavior Expression Data From A Social Network, Martin Zwick, Teresa D. Schmidt May 2013

Exploring The Application Of Reconstructability Analysis To Behavior Expression Data From A Social Network, Martin Zwick, Teresa D. Schmidt

Student Research Symposium

Reconstructability analysis (RA) is proposed as a complementary method for evaluating social network-related phenomena. Longitudinal records of social behavior expression among members of a social network are commonly represented as a set of social network analysis (SNA) connections, but might also be usefully represented as a set of associations derived through RA methods. Reconstructability Analysis identifies individuals as being associated when their behavior patterns appear coordinated–a representation that is unavailable with standard SNA. To explore the potential usefulness of RA for analyzing social behaviors, simulated behavior patterns were evaluated with both SNA and RA, and the results were compared. Several …

Perceived Impact Of Individual Development Account Participation Among Native Hawaiians, David W. Rothwell, Rashida Bhaiji, Anne Blumenthal May 2013

Perceived Impact Of Individual Development Account Participation Among Native Hawaiians, David W. Rothwell, Rashida Bhaiji, Anne Blumenthal

Center for Social Development Research

Indigenous peoples face many social development challenges and the lingering effects of colonization. Income transfer, a traditional social welfare approach designed to raise minimum living standards, has had limited beneficial effects on long-term social conditions. As a complement to income transfer, asset-based approaches to social welfare have resulted in positive effects in the short and long terms. Some Indigenous communities are exploring how asset-based interventions might enhance social development (Hicks, Edwards, Dennis, & Finsel, 2005), but only limited and scattered research describes how they experience asset-building programs. This qualitative descriptive study explores the perceived impact of a large Individual Development …

Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary May 2013

Bosnian Immigrants: An Analysis Of The Bosnian Community's Influence On The Cultural Landscape Of Bowling Green, Ky, Nathan Jess Cary

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Diasporas have been occurring for thousands of years, and today globalization has facilitated the quick rate at which diasporas occur on a global scale. Diasporas entail the mass movement of refugees across international borders, and diasporic peoples today now find themselves journeying across oceans and continents to the safety of host cities in a matter of weeks or days. My research analyzes the effects that Bosnian immigrants have had on the cultural landscape of Bowling Green, Kentucky. When people move, they bring their cultures with them, and this type of cultural diffusion impacts the landscape of the host cities. As …

Understanding Colombian Violence Through Geographic Information Systems And Statistical Approaches, Brandon Fowler May 2013

Understanding Colombian Violence Through Geographic Information Systems And Statistical Approaches, Brandon Fowler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In 2002, Colombia had the highest homicide rate of any Latin American country(Berkman, 2007). The origins of this violence, however, are complex and difficult to identify. It would be sensible to argue that it cannot be explained by any one particular factor, but rather an assortment of many factors that wholly represent the social, economic, and political conditions of Colombia. By better understanding the origins of Colombian violence, policy makers can more effectively address and alleviate this prolonged issue. This study examines the geographic nature of municipal homicide rates for Colombia in 2005. The purpose of this study is to …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and identify key characteristics of and differences between people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) who exhibit moderate/high fear of falling avoidance behaviors and those that exhibit low fear of falling avoidance behaviors.

Subjects: A total of 24 subjects (5 females, 19 males; mean age= 72.2, SD=9.1) participated in this study.

Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to identify descriptive characteristics of subjects with PD associated with moderate/high levels of fear avoidance behavior (MHA) or low levels of fear avoidance (LA) as measured by the Fear of Falling Avoidance-Behavior …

Token Reinforcement And Resistance To Change, Eric A. Thrailkill May 2013

Token Reinforcement And Resistance To Change, Eric A. Thrailkill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Interventions based on a token economy effectively reduce problematic behavior. Yet, treatment gains deteriorate once an intervention is discontinued. It is important to better understand the persistence of behavior maintained by token reinforcement in simple experimental procedures. A Pavlovian association with primary reinforcement is said to endow neutral stimuli (e.g., coins, poker chips, lights, signs, stickers, etc.) with their own function to strengthen behavior as conditioned reinforcers. Behavioral momentum theory suggests that resistance to change under conditions of disruption is the appropriate measure of response strength. However, some animal studies have suggested that conditioned reinforcement may not affect resistance to …

No Child Left Inside Week: Pilot Program, Jamie C. Clark

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This program evaluation assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of a free No Child Left Inside (NCLI) week-long outdoor program to coincide with the Utah state-designated No Child Left Inside Week. The pilot program was implemented at the community level in Cache Valley, Utah, in 2012. Families attended eleven activities throughout the week that included hands-on experience and participation. A community BioBlitz was also planned as a conclusion to the week. Survey results demonstrate increased excitement and desire to spend more time outdoors exploring and learning, accomplishing NCLI goals of laying groundwork for an environmental literacy foundation in America’s children.

Implicit Knowledge Transfer Use In Virtual Healthcare Information Systems Project Teams And Its Association With Successful Project Outcomes, Nadene A. Chambers Apr 2013

Implicit Knowledge Transfer Use In Virtual Healthcare Information Systems Project Teams And Its Association With Successful Project Outcomes, Nadene A. Chambers

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on implicit knowledge transfer in virtual information systems project teams in the healthcare industry and the association of such knowledge transfer with successful projects. The use of virtual teams is expected to continue to increase, particularly because of the passage of the HITECH Act of 2009, calling for the computerization of medical records in the United States. Although the healthcare industry has had experience with virtual teams and the use of those teams is expected to increase, there has been little research done on how implicit knowledge transfer is linked to successful projects.

A successful IT project …

The Perceived Value Of Counselor Preparation For Student Affairs Professionals, Jake J. Protivnak, Matthew J. Paylo, J. Carol Mercer

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Student affairs programs share a common goal of developing master’s level professionals for employment in higher education. Approximately one-third of student affairs training programs are counseling-based and half of those programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). However, there is a lack of literature regarding the preparation of student affairs professionals trained in counseling programs and the importance of counselor training to the student affairs profession. Based upon a review of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education Professional Standards, CACREP standards, and other related research, this article will …

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman Mar 2013

The Enduring Narrative Of “Socialized” Medicine: Oppositional Rhetoric And Obama’S Health Care Reform, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

President Barack Obama and his promises of health care reform were met with strong public support when he took office in January 2009. By the time Congress ultimately passed legislation in March 2010, not only had a majority of citizens turned against health care reform, but many had come to interpret it as inimical to American values. Opponents pejoratively branded the president a “socialist” and his reform as “socialized medicine.” A review of the history of health care reform efforts in the United States over the last eight decades illustrates that this rhetoric and the defining patterns of its proliferation …

Small-Dollar Children's Savings Accounts, Income, And College Outcomes, William Elliott, Hyun-A Song, Ilsung Nam Feb 2013

Small-Dollar Children's Savings Accounts, Income, And College Outcomes, William Elliott, Hyun-A Song, Ilsung Nam

Center for Social Development Research

In this paper, we examine the relationship between children’s small-dollar savings accounts and college enrollment and graduation by asking three important research questions: (a) are children with savings of their own more likely to attend or graduate from college, (b) does dosage (having no account; having basic savings only; or having savings designated for school of less than $1, $1 to $499, or $500 or more) matter, and (c) is designating savings for school more predictive than having basic savings alone? We use propensity score weighted data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and its supplements to create …

Reducing Student Loan Debt Through Parents’ College Savings, William Elliott, Ilsung Nam Feb 2013

Reducing Student Loan Debt Through Parents’ College Savings, William Elliott, Ilsung Nam

Center for Social Development Research

One policy rationale for promoting Child Development Accounts (CDAs) is that they may help reduce college debt, but no research provides evidence of this. Research does suggest that high-dollar student loans ($10,000 or more) can reduce the probability that lower income students in particular persist in and graduate from college. In this study, we find evidence to suggest that parents’ college savings may reduce the probability that students accrue high-dollar student loan debt across all income levels with the exception of high-income students. Based on this and evidence from separate research on small-dollar children’s savings accounts, we suggest that it …

Youth Development Through Service: A Quality Assessment Of The Youthbuild Americorps Program, Kathleen A. Tomberg

Publications and Research

The YouthBuild AmeriCorps program serves youth facing a multitude of challenges, including a lack of education and job skills, community disengagement, and economic disadvantage. This program assessment found that after engaging with the YouthBuild AmeriCorps model, participants made significant, positive changes in their outlook on service, personal responsibility, and community orientation. More specifically, after participating in the program, they deepened their personal commitments to service, began to develop a sense of personal worth and reliability, became more connected with their communities, and started to develop more trust in larger social institutions. These encouraging findings suggest that YouthBuild AmeriCorps is succeeding …
