Modeling Third Sector Organizations: A Proposal For An Organizational Modeling Language, Roger A. Lohmann
Modeling Third Sector Organizations: A Proposal For An Organizational Modeling Language, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Sector-talk is one of the stable features of discussions of nonprofit organizations today. However, little progress has yet been made in defining or measuring the allegedly different social relations which characterize the sectors. This paper proposes an approach to operational definition of the sectors, grounded in use of chemical modeling software to modify the lowly organization chart. The organizational modeling language proposed here addresses four dimensions: dominance, exchange, intimacy and mutuality.

Audiences are constantly bombarded by a whole host of bland catchphrases. Indeed, their verygeneration is viewed as a necessary part of the art of modern media communication. Complexand contested issues are forcibly reduced to snappy and memorable phrases so as to be quicklydigested by an apparently impatient and inattentive audience. In some respects capturing theattention of the audience is more important than the precision of the statement. If we were tosurvey the most frequently uttered phrases, some of the following would very likely be in the topten: `Markets are more competitive than ever', `we live in a truly globalized world', …
Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor
Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor
Norma Mansor
Leadership behavior significantly influences the performance of companies and the motivation of people. However, much of our knowledge regarding the characteristics of effective leaders is based on research carried out in Western countries. To redress this imbalance, the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Program was set up in the early 1990s to investigate leadership behaviors in over 60 countries around the world, including Malaysia. Much cross-cultural research focuses on identifying differences between cultures. In contrast, the results of the GLOBE research indicate that a number of attributes associated with charismatic/transformational leadership are universally endorsed by all cultures …
Has The Time Come To Evaluate Evaluation? (Or Who Will Be Accountable For Accountability?), Roger A. Lohmann
Has The Time Come To Evaluate Evaluation? (Or Who Will Be Accountable For Accountability?), Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A review essay of six recent books represents an occasion to examine the very idea of accountability, and to examine what the effects of several decades of emphasis on evaluation have been.

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
This issue of the Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism and Practice is dedicated to the memory of Paulo Freire who died on May 2, 1997 at the age of 75. Paulo Freire is the author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, The Politics of Education, Pedagogy of the City, Pedagogy of Hope and many other books that have created a radical discourse on liberatory education and have influenced teachers, theorists and cultural workers throughout the world. His last book, Pedagogia da Autonomia: Saberes necessários à prática educativa, is not yet translated in English, but is expected soon, possibly …
After The Third Sector: Emerging And Disappearing Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
After The Third Sector: Emerging And Disappearing Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The third sector is currently the most popular categorical label as a summary term for capturing the activities of a highly diverse set of tax-exempt corporations and nonprofit organizations. I draw a sharper-than-usual distinction here between a third sector composed of a million or more social entrepreneurial nonprofit firms and and the voluntary associations, clubs, groups and diverse uncountable volunteer and philanthropic efforts, projects, causes, which I label as commons and which have in recent years been increasingly subsumed under the general heading of civil society. While the voluntary action of commons is a more or less permanent feature of …
Organization Structure And Structural Change In European Manufacturing Organisations, Derek Pugh, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Geoff Mallory
Organization Structure And Structural Change In European Manufacturing Organisations, Derek Pugh, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Geoff Mallory
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The paper considers two approaches to thestudy of the impact of national cultures on thestructure of organizations; viz: culture free andculture bound approaches. Af ter a discussionof the problems of obtaining comparable datain cross-cultural research, the preliminary results of a comparative study of large manufacturing organizations in six countries in Europeare presented. The results suggest that whileformal organizational authority structures appear to be culture free reflecting the impact ofstrategic contingencies, use of coordinationtechniques, such as regular top managementmeetings and task forces, is more affected bycultural factors.
Special Events And Community Elites: An Exploratory Study, Roger A. Lohmann
Special Events And Community Elites: An Exploratory Study, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Special events are an important phenomenon in the American voluntary sector, both as a form of fundraising activity and as celebrations of the efforts of volunteers and recognition of the importance of causes and problems. This unpublished paper reports on a study of a national sample of elite special events publicized in a national circulation magazine which at the time published a regular feature in each issue highlighting charitable events. Findings profile the kinds of events and beneficiaries identified as special events during the 1980s, before an extensive amount of fundraising research had been done.
The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa
The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa
All Master's Theses
This study assesses the goal commitment generated by different approaches to goal setting. The participants were the directors, board presidents, staff, board members and volunteers of two non-profit organizations. One group explored their history as an organization, significant events and the impact of those events before carrying out the same goal setting process as the other group. Self-efficacy was measured before the exercise began. Goal commitment was measured after participants prioritized goals and selected subgoals on which to take action. The hypothesis that cognitively reviewing past history would lead to greater commitment was rejected. A second hypothesis that the self-efficacy …
The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann
The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …
