A Semantic Prosody Analysis Of Swear Words In A Corpus Of English Songs, Hashim Hazri Shahreen

This study looks at the semantic prosody of swear words found in a corpus of English songs by looking at their collocations using a corpus software; AntConc. A total of 545 songs were chosen based on the Billboard year-end chart from 2011 to 2016 with 243,689 number of tokens and 8,139 number of word types. Word lists and concordance lines were generated from the corpus for the data analysis. The analysis on the concordance lines showed that not all swear words with negative-based meaning possessed negative semantic prosody. Kata pinjaman daripada bahasa lain merupakan fenomena yang kebiasaannya dijumpai dalam banyak bahasa di dunia. Menurut Payne (2006), kata pinjaman membawa maksud penutur dalam sesuatu bahasa menganggap perkataan, morfem atau pembentukan daripada bahasa lain sebagai leksikal dalam bahasa sendiri. Kata pinjaman bahasa Inggeris yang digunakan dalam bahasa Jepun juga turut disesuaikan dalam bentuk penulisan. The present study investigates rivalry discourse in football news of the Malaysian media, The Star which has been produced by local news authors who also refer to themselves as the faithful fans of football teams. As they express faith in their team, these news authors tend to compare their team against the others by highlighting their superiority and inferiority. The current study deals with Quranic rhetorical questions that carry specific rhetorical functions and their two English translations. The analysis is based on twenty four Quranic rhetorical questions and their two English translations: “the Koran Interpreted” by Arberry (1955/1996) and “the Noble Quran: English translation of the meanings and commentary” (1996) by al-Hilali and Khan. Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti jenis-jenis lakuan tuturan yang digunakan oleh kanak-kanak prasekolah semasa mereka berinteraksi dengan guru dan rakan sebaya dalam kelas bahasa Cina di tadika. Pemerolehan bahasa dan perkembangan bahasa kanak-kanak masih berlaku pada peringkat umur mereka antara 4 tahun hingga 6 tahun (Piaget, 1964; Saxton, 2017). Data yang dikumpul melibatkan rakaman video semasa kanak-kanak prasekolah sedang belajar, menjalankan aktiviti, bermain dan berinteraksi dengan guru dan rakan sebaya.
