Experiences Learning English: A Case Study Of Adult Immigrants In Portland, Maine, Usa, Pamela L. Kasabian
MA TESOL Collection
The paper examines the process of English language acquisition for adult immigrants living in Portland, Maine, USA. The focus is on the process of language acquisition and integration into a new linguistic culture through analysis of personally narrated experiences of adult immigrants living in Portland, Maine. It seeks to expose similarities within highly individualistic linguistic journeys that contribute to investment and engagement in learning. In reviewing the data generated by the interviews, I hope to find situations to more deeply explore that could influence a more reciprocal learning culture for the mutual benefit of the language learner and the community …

What Is New In The New Toefl-Ibt 2006 Test Format?, Alla Zareva
What Is New In The New Toefl-Ibt 2006 Test Format?, Alla Zareva
English Faculty Publications
In recent years TOEFL has become one of the most popular high-stakes tests affecting not only what and how English language teachers teach but also what and how students learn (e.g. Johnson, Jordan, & Poehner, 2005; Alderson & Wall, 1993). The new 2006 TOEFL–iBT exam is on its way; yet, until now, information about the new test format and test preparation materials is scarce. Above and beyond interest in the test alone, the burning question is what demanded the revision of the current test, given that the latest computer-based TOEFL was introduced fairly recently worldwide. The paper elaborates on some …

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen
Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen
Dissertations and Theses
Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. Specifically, the focus of this study was the completion of a mini-ethnography project designed to give the students a cross-cultural exchange. Since …
Enhancing Academic Competence In English As A Foreign Language Through Multiple Strategies, Mei-Hwa Yeh
Enhancing Academic Competence In English As A Foreign Language Through Multiple Strategies, Mei-Hwa Yeh
Theses Digitization Project
In Taiwan, English has always been taught mostly by the grammar t ransalation method. Learning strategies and metacognitive strategies are seldom introduced during classroom instruction. Therefore, students learn a lot of gragmented knowledge but do not know how to apply the knowledge in their learning process. For my target teaching level, secondary school, the ability to utilize different strategies with in the learning process is critically important in order for the students to integrate their knowledge and use language effectively. This project is designed to address the problems of teaching English in Taiwan employing a strategy-based curriculum.
