While recent years have seen a research interest in the concept of teacher identity, still less is known about the interplay between teacher-researcher identity. This issue is important for the fields of applied linguistics and teacher education because it sheds light on teacher-scholars’ identity realizations. In this study, I examine the interrelations of teacher and researcher identity across different contexts and spaces. Namely, I analyze the trajectories of one teacher as he moved through countries and educational experiences. Data sources included semi-structured interviews, artifacts, and email correspondence. Bilingualism has been studied extensively in multiple disciplines, yet we are still unsure how exactly bilinguals think. Though the existence of a bilingual advantage is debated, this effect has been shown in tasks using selective attention. These tasks study the effects of language interference, where two types of interference are observed: interlingual (between-languages) and intralingual (within one language). This study examines language interference in Spanish-English bilinguals using an auditory-visual simultaneous translation experimental setup. Sixteen college English monolinguals and 17 college Spanish-English bilinguals were tested. Participants translated or repeated words displayed on a screen while ignoring distractor words played through headphones. …

Plautdietsch is a Germanic language mostly spoken in the Americas. With a long history of migration, it has been influenced by a variety of linguistics contact situations. This paper provides qualitative analysis of Mennonite Plautdietsch-speakers in Seminole Texas. The dialect of Plautdietsch spoken shows influence from its contact with English (Texas and Canada) and Spanish (Mexico). This influence appears in borrowings and sound changes. The degree of linguistic influence correlates with the identity of the Mennonite community. Historically insular, the community in Seminole, which stems from an Old Colony Mennonite settlement in Mexico, practices a more progressive and modern lifestyle. …

The language of the draughtsboard sharks is a fictional conlang. This paper describes the history, physical anatomy, means of articulation, morphology, syntax, and grammar of the language through the entirely fictional lens of a research team studying shark communication in New Zealand. Notable aspects of the conlang are its portrayal of imaginary, non-human speech organs created to eliminate a shark’s realistic inability to speak, as well as the absence of a written element to the language largely due to the lack of opposable thumbs (or fingers at all) on sharks. The meaning differences that the temporal-aspectual system and the indicative and subjunctive versions of sentences trigger in the Spanish language are the cornerstone of its semantic and syntactic possibilities. Many studies have found significant differences in ways men and women use language; some argue that these differences occur as a result of culture differences, and others suggest that they are influenced by differences in social status and power between the genders. However, some of the major studies were concluded decades ago and do not reflect changes in gender relations in recent years. In this study, we analyze modern conversations using two social media platforms, Twitter and Reddit, to determine whether substantial differences between men and women’s use of language were preserved between the genders.
