This paper is to explore the depth of Barac Obama’s rhetoric in his Iowa Caucuses Speech: “Our Time for Change has Come”. Obama displayed his outstanding rhetorical craftsmanship to drive irresistibly his power of persuasion in the earliest Democratic Caucuses in the whitest state of Iowa that gave him a victory; thus the speech underscored the ground-breaking messages to the rest of the nation that America was ripe for an African-American President.

This article shows that ethnography, as an approach, is a very useful tool to be applied in research attempting a good understanding of EFL/ESL classrooms. With reference to work done by anthropologists and classroom researchers, the present article argues that education, including EFL/ESL classrooms, can be well understood by using ethnographic approaches. This is done by elaborating the relevance of ethnography and the classroom context in the sense that ethnographic principles are applicable in describing and understanding the culture of a classroom, and EFL/ESL teaching in particular.

The Bible’s translator expects his translation to be not only accurate, but also acceptable in accordance with the norms and cultural values of its readers. This study aims to describe the domesticating ideology in translation. Tu–Vous Theory combined with Attitude, as part of Appraisal Theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics, is used to investigate how words should be used. This study is carried out to answer the research question: what are the characteristics of intrinsic elements, including plot, character, and setting, in Arabic fictitious narrative writing by Indonesian native-language students? This study is qualitative in nature. The approach used is socio-psycho-structural. The data are verbal and consist of: (1) fictitious narrative writing, (2) interview transcripts, and (3) field notes. The data on fictitious narrative writing were taken from the students’ portfolio of narrative fiction final tasks in the Writing Lecture 1 course. This paper is intended to describe the results of a study focusing on students’ translation problems in translating Arabic texts into Indonesian. The problems result from students’ understanding and retelling (re-expressing) the results of that understanding during the translation process. In this study, the researcher applies a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that students’ problems in translation are closely related to (1) their understanding of linguistic and non-linguistic structures, and (2) their difficulties in retelling (re-expressing) the results of their reading regarding linguistic and non-linguistic issues.

This paper presents an internal evaluation on English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) subject which is developed by the English Language Teaching Center (ELTC) from a private university in East Java, Indonesia. The research was conducted to elicit feedback on the effectiveness of English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP). The presented data were obtained from questionnaires, group interviews, classroom observations, and the students’ final scores. There were 124 students and 6 lecturers involved in this small-scale research. Therefore, this paper is intended to describe the interesting facts of the study.

This study aims to describe and explain laku among utterances in classroom discourse. Laku among speech acts are a natural phenomenon of language use in social and cultural contexts. To explain this phenomenon, ethnographic research was employed based on the structure of classroom communication. The results of the study show three findings regarding the use of laku among utterances in the classroom: ing ngarsa, ing madya, and tut wuri handayani, which occur in the initial, middle, and final speech acts of classroom discourse.

Honorific informative strategies play an integral role in Indonesian speech acts within the informed families of Makassar society. These honorific informative strategies have unique characteristics. This study was conducted to describe and explain honorific informative strategies in the imperative speech acts of informed families in Makassar society. The design of this study was qualitative, applying pragmatic theory and an ethnographic communication analysis model. The results of this study show that honorific informative strategies are implemented through imperative and interrogative speech acts, using a variety of honorific alternatives based on different contexts that align with social and cultural norms.

This research intends to find out whether Indonesian EFL learners are aware of the presence of “space” and are able to lexicalize it in their English compositions. It takes 21 seventh-semester English Department students as research subjects. They were given story pictures and asked to write a narrative. The resulting 21 EFL narratives were measured against a native-speaker narrative model in terms of “spatial words” (prepositions and adverbial particles), producing the following comparisons: 6.6% vs. 7.2% in total, 78.2% vs. 85.7% used dynamically, 95.5% vs. 100% used obligatorily, and 19.2% vs. 28.6% used in phrasal verbs. The aim of this study is to determine the semantic construction in Indone- sian language by pre-school-age children. The present research consisted of a longitudinal study of five pre-school-age children. The study of these five children is based on the developmental psycholinguistic and semantic-pragmatic studies. To collect the data, we used the observation, recording, and interview technique. The results show that the semantic construction of word meaning in Indonesian language by pre-school-age children consisted of: (1) over-specification, (2) overgeneraliza- tion, (3) intersection, (4) towards meaning spesification, and (5) meaning associa- tion. This research was aimed at describing as well as explaining certain types of Indonesian illocutionary acts, usages, and their impacts on family interactions. Communicative and pragmatic designs were used in the research. The results of the research indicate that Indonesian commissive illocutionary acts in family interactions include promises as well as bargain actions, and these actions can develop through various powers. They are implicated by the usage of the following principles: politeness, cooperation and values developing in the family. The principles are also influenced by the socio-cultural dimensions.

Problematik BI adalah masalah kebahasaan yang ditemui dalam bahasa Indonesia yang biasanya mengandung dan mengundang persoalan. Dalam tulisan ini, penulis menguraikan secara teknis problematika BI, meliputi penjelasan tentang wujud konkret problematik BI, kehadiran problematik BI, latar belakang munculnya problematik BI, bentuk-bentuk problematik BI, serta alternatif pemecahannya. Kehadiran problematik BI dapat diamati pada fakta pemakaian bahasa Indonesia, pada pertumbuhan bahasa Indonesia, dan pada upaya pembinaannya. Penyantiran tema dapat dikenali sebagai fenomena sintaksis dan semantis kalimat berstruktur tema–rema dalam bahasa Indonesia lisan. Ada tiga strategi penyantiran dalam bahasa Indonesia, yakni penyantiran dengan pronomina, baik pronomina persona maupun pronomina demonstrativa, penyantiran dengan epitet, dan penyantiran dengan konstruksi yang. Penyantiran tema tidak hanya terdapat pada rema, tetapi juga terdapat pada tema lanjutan. Leksis adalah salah satu unsur bahasa yang diperoleh oleh pembelajar bahasa pada tahap-tahap awal, baik oleh pembelajar bahasa ibu (B1) maupun bahasa kedua/asing (B2). Dalam proses pemerolehan B2, terbukti bahwa pembelajar tidak hanya menghadapi masalah kesalahan struktur bahasa, tetapi juga masalah pemilihan leksis. This paper discusses the theoretical understanding of tone in literary works, with a particular focus on Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. Drawing on E.M. Forster’s framework, especially the concept of prophetic song, the author highlights how tone in literature can reflect the moral condition of humanity and its struggle with nature. Tone is understood not merely as a form of entertainment but as a means of expressing profound universal values. By comparing Forster’s ideas with other literary works, this paper emphasizes the importance of literary appreciation through the recognition and understanding of tone.
