Maximizing the influence of our work means understanding and managing how it is affected by various methods of dissemination, evaluation, access, and preservation. This session will introduce the system of scholarly communication and highlight the issues most pertinent to graduate students and early career researchers.

Scholarship on rock and popular music has grown dramatically in volume and methodological variety and complexity including extensive use of interdisciplinary approaches. There currently is no comprehensive resource for scholars and educators to explore monographic scholarly literature on rock. I will showcase a new annotated bibliography, with a focus on disciplinarity and methodology, which provides a lens into how this scholarly discourse has evolved. This bibliography also makes visible broader trends regarding research topics in rock and popular music. At universities, research data is increasingly stored in research data repositories according to a data management plan (DMP) and thus made available for further use. The challenge of reusing hundreds, thousands, or millions of data sets is to obtain an overview of the data in a short period of time and to search through all the data. This lightning talk was presented by the Scholarly Communications Coordinator and the Scholarly Communications Student Supervisor from Brigham Young University at the Digital Commons North American Conference 2023. It provides an overview of how student workers at the BYU Library are involved in Digital Commons projects and discusses the types of projects and processes that students work on, including an outline of student supervisor responsibilities. The purpose of the presentation is to get other Digital Commons administrators excited about expanding the possibilities of their repositories by collaborating with student workers.

The construction of scientific papers is performed in service of the greater scientific community. This iterative process is, in effect, an academic economy, where all members benefit from well-written papers. However, many published scientific papers are poorly written; they often lack sufficient detail to allow replication, there is improper usage of citations or a lack of regard to relevant work, reporting is vague or without linked empirical data to allow verification, figures do not correspond to text or are non-sensical, literary elements, e.g., bulleted lists, are used ineffectively, formatting renders certain sections unreadable, and grammatical errors abound. Since September of 2019, a task group within the European Open Science Cloud - EOSC Nordic Project, work-package 5 (T5.3.2), has focused its attention on machine-actionable Data Management Plans (maDMPs). A delivery working-paper from the group (Hasan et al. 2021) concluded in summary that extracting useful information from traditional free-text based DMPs is problematic. While maDMPs are generally more FAIR compliant, and as such accessible to both humans and machines, more interoperable with other systems, and serving different stakeholders for processing, sharing, evaluation and reuse. Data management plans (DMPs) are essential to a research data life cycle. The DMPs should be developed as part of the research programs to be effective. For disease area research, integrating research community-recommended data standards during collection can enhance the likelihood of data reuse. Informatics tools are required as part of DMPs with the aim of data being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

The United States National Institutes of Health supports various disease area research programs and has recently finalized the Data Management and Sharing Policy. The policy highlights the importance of sharing data and metadata, including information on various …

This chapter discusses the perspectives and experiences of an academic librarian related to the challenging phenomenon of predatory publishing. Academic librarians have extensive scholarly communications knowledge and mitigate predatory publishing when they educate authors on journal and publisher selection as well as how to recognize and avoid predatory publishers. Unintentional predatory publishing is an outcome of deficits in scholarly information literacy—inadequate knowledge and critical thinking related to scholarship. It doesn’t have to take loading additional records in the catalog or a team of librarians to find and select titles. This paper explores the process Eastern Kentucky University Libraries went through to create and develop a mediated demand driven acquisitions workflow starting with interlibrary loan requests and helped the collection become modern, diversified, and more responsive to current users and curriculum.
