University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Within the University at Albany, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE) hosts the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, a program designed to showcase and promote student success and research excellence. Previously, CURCE has relied upon outdated and inefficient methods for soliciting student submissions for this conference. This process will be greatly enhanced by a partnership with the University Libraries, through the use of the Scholars Archive. This open-access tool represents an opportunity that will drastically reduce costs associated with the abstract submission process, improve workflow, and involve faculty in the conference planning and application processes. The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. In this paper the author examines from a library perspective some of the complications with transitioning to an open access model for journal publishing; how costs that support publishing efforts may shift from readers to researchers; what’s happening within the library community with regard to assessing the value of subscriptions; and what universities may come to expect from content providers as private funders take a more visible role in mandating the “openness” of research information.

The development of data and model integration platforms has furthered scientific inquiry and helped to solve pressing social and environmental problems. While several e-infrastructure platforms have been developed, the concept of data and model integration remains obscure, and these platforms have produced few firm results. This article investigates data and model integration on the Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS) platform, using three case projects from water-related fields. We provide concrete examples of data and model integration by analyzing the data transfer and analysis process, and demonstrate what platform functions are needed to promote the advantages of data and model …
