How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin

Many librarians support faculty with the publishing process, which includes journal selection and evaluating the impact of their scholarly output. While large universities have the resources for entire departments devoted to bibliometrics, the authors of this article give strategies for faculty publishing support at a smaller liberal arts university. The authors created a LibGuide with publishing resources and presented the initiative to several academic divisions. Faculty were surveyed, and the results indicated that the majority of respondents were interested in assessing journal quality and viewed the library as a resource for help with the publishing process.

Four publishing companies in Ibadan were sampled to determine their impact on availability and accessibility of indigenous books in Nigeria educational sector, the impact of indigenous publishing on educational development in Nigeria, constraints to indigenous publishing in Nigeria and ways of promoting indigenous publishing in Nigeria. A survey of quantitative method was conducted with questionnaire as data gathering instrument. The population of study was 100 being the sum of 25 respondents randomly selected from each publishing company. Frequency counts and percentages were adopted for data analysis. Making scholarly information visible to web search engines is an ongoing challenge, and undergraduate research is no exception. Using a sample of award-winning undergraduate history papers and journals, the authors searched Google, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, and the authors’ institutional repository to gauge the difficulty of locating these works. Given that many of these works were not easily found, results suggest that libraries and their institutions could be doing more to increase the discoverability of undergraduate research. As of spring 2018, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries is in the middle of its ORCID implementation for campus. The process began in late 2016, when UNLV became premium members of ORCID through a deal negotiated by the Greater Western Library Alliance. ORCID provides researchers with a persistent digital identifier, which disambiguates individuals and allows them to receive proper attribution and credit for their work.

As premium members, the Libraries would receive reports from ORCID about researcher activity and have access to the ORCID API. With the API, the Libraries could receive notifications of our campus research …

Digitization and the preservation of digitized materials presents many complex legal questions, like ownership, copyright, and conflicting laws. Digital materials may be subject to many levels of legal restrictions like copying, storage, access, and modification of content. The speaker will probably confuse things even more by talking about some issues that are coming over the hill including legally enforceable duties of stewardship, loss of academic scholarship and legal authority, and arguments against strict enforcement of copyright law. It’s also time to move from collaborations, because they’re good idea, to legally established partnerships, because they have teeth.

The 15th anniversary of the Budapest Open Access Initiative provided an excellent opportunity to take stock of global progress toward open access and to gauge the main obstacles still remaining to the widespread adoption of open access policies and practices. As part of this process, feedback was solicited through an open survey that was disseminated online, and that received responses from individuals in 60 countries around the world.

This article explores the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy’s frame, Scholarship as a Conversation. This frame asserts that information literate students have the disposition, skills, and knowledge to recognize and participate in disciplinary scholarly conversations. By investigating the peer-review process as part of scholarly conversations, this article provides a brief literature review on peer review in information literacy instruction, and argues that by using open peer review (OPR) models for teaching, library workers can allow students to gain a deeper understanding of scholarly conversations. Book banning or challenging is a complex issue, in which a person takes issue with a book in the library‟s collection, complains to the librarian, and sometimes demands that the book be removed from the collection entirely. Books for young adult audiences are especially at risk, and the reasons why these books are challenged or banned are numerous. By reading fifteen different young adult books from between the years of 1990 and 2016, the researchers performed a content analysis to look at the reasons why books may be challenged or banned. We started the year as the Hydra Project with a governance structure largely defined in the founding Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2012, and ended it as the Samvera Community with an improved governance structure under active discussion. The quality of teaching, research and community service of lecturers coupled with their publication in any university system depend on the quality of the electronic database they use. This study therefore, investigated the knowledge of electronic databases as predictors of research productivity of academic staff in private universities in South-west, Nigeria.

The descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was adopted. A total of 1656 academic staff in in the 21 private universities were sampled.
