Libraries Scholarship

Rowan University wanted a single, streamlined point of access to information about research activity by all our faculty. The Technology Services Librarian proposed leveraging our ORCID membership to integrate faculty research information in ORCID with university identity management services. Information Resources & Technology (IRT) worked with the Division of Research and the Libraries to design and implement a solution that achieved this goal.

Introduction: Faculty face numerous pressures as they decide whether to publish articles open access (OA). This pilot study investigated the extent to which School of Education faculty members’ engagement with OA was influenced by promotion and tenure (P&T) and how this influence related to other intrinsic, extrinsic, and contextual factors. Methods: This exploratory, sequential, mixed-method study adapted Social Exchange Theory to understand faculty engagement with OA article publication. The study used a quantitative survey followed by qualitative interviews and focus groups.

Results: Participants reported that P&T had substantive influence over faculty practices regarding OA. Con- nected factors included beliefs about …

In this report, we explore the progress made over the past two decades toward achieving equal participation by women in research and innovation. Comprising Hong Kong, Macao, and nine cities in southern China's Guangdong province, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is one of the most dynamic and innovative regions in the world, housing leading universities and global high tech companies. To understand the research landscape of the GBA and assess its research strengths, this report, developed in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong provides an overview of the research performance of the GBA and a highlight of the research development of Hong Kong based on analysis of research output data from 2018-2022.

Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Library Publishing Curriculum

In 2018, The Educopia Institute and the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), in partnership with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), NASIG, and BlueSky to BluePrint, released the first iteration of the “Library Publishing Curriculum,” a suite of synchronous and asynchronous professional development offerings for librarians. The four initial modules—Content, Impact, Policy, and Sustainability—were funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences and address major competencies in library publishing. As part of the sustainability plan for these grant deliverables, the LPC created an editorial board that would steer future iterations of the curriculum. They took as their first task a step …

redatory publishing is a complex problem that harms a broad array of stakeholders and concerns across the scholarly communications system. It shines a light on the inadequacies of scholarly assessment and related rewards systems, contributes to the marginalization of scholarship from less developed countries, and negatively impacts the acceptance of open access.   To fix what is broken in scholarly communications, academic librarians must act as both teachers and advocates and partner with other stakeholders who have the agency to change how scholarship is produced, assessed, and rewarded. Federal agencies are directed, as a matter of United States Federal policy, to provide free, immediate public access to peer-reviewed scholarly publications that are produced with support from Federal research grant funding. Because copyright vests in the author of the work, agencies must have permission from the author in order to provide that access. A government-wide regulation, in place since 1976, constitutes one possible source for the needed permission. The “Federal Purpose License” provides that, as a condition of Federal funding, grant recipients issue the granting agency a non-exclusive license to use all works subject to copyright and either developed …

Hypothesis formulation and testing are central to empirical research. A strong hypothesis is a best guess based on existing evidence and informed by a comprehensive view of relevant literature. However, with exponential increase in the number of scientific articles published annually, manual aggregation and synthesis of evidence related to a given hypothesis is a challenge. Our work explores the ability of current large language models (LLMs) to discern evidence in support or refute of specific hypotheses based on the text of scientific abstracts. This descriptive study examined the Shah Abdul Latif Public Library in Shahdadpur, Sindh, Pakistan, with the aim of understanding its features, resources, services, and knowledge dissemination and community engagement. The study used mixed-method approach and collected data was presented in simple tables and charts. Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies was a collaborative, multi-year open textbook project that engaged faculty authors, librarians, a university press, and OER professionals. The resulting textbook takes a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of LGBTQ+ issues that helps students grasp core concepts through a variety of different perspectives. The text offers accessible, academically sound information on a wide range of topics, including history, culture, and Queer Theory; an exploration of LGBTQ+ relationships, families, parenting, health, and education; and how to conduct research on LGBTQ+ topics.
