Virginia Tech University Libraries, in collaboration with Virginia Tech Department of Computer Science and Old Dominion University Department of Computer Science, request $505,214 in grant funding for a 3-year project, the goal of which is to bring computational access to book-length documents, demonstrating that with Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). The project is motivated by the following library and community needs. (1) Despite huge volumes of book-length documents in digital libraries, there is a lack of models offering effective and efficient computational access to these long documents. Mission-Driven Recordkeeping: The Need For Rim Staff In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Emily Mercer

As a robust and growing industry, often with strong ties to communities served, there is much potential for nonprofit organizations to harness powerful and rich databases of cultural information not found in any other sector. Yet research shows that in most cases, nonprofit organizations operate on limited budgets, tight deadlines, and may see the task of properly managing records as counter-productive to the mission of the organization. This research examines the systems of recordkeeping in nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and argues that record keeping staff must be considered an essential component for a nonprofit organization to survive and thrive.

Plagiarism is regarded as an academic crime, but can affect hobbies that rely on research and information sharing such as genealogy. The issue is well-known within the genealogy community. However, information professionals who aid genealogists in their research may not know enough about the issue. How can the library field respond constructively to the issue of uncontrolled plagiarism in genealogy? While the genealogy community condemns plagiarism and offers resources to correct it, current library practices concentrate on services and not on plagiarism education in the genealogy context, concentrating more on copyright and legal problems. The Information Behaviors Of Fiction Writers: A Systematic Approach To An Understudied Information Community, Lisa Lowdermilk

Within the context of creative information communities in general, fiction writers remain a relatively understudied community. This article seeks to rectify that gap by highlighting the information behaviors of fiction writers, including the ways in which they network, as well as the processes they use when writing. In doing so, it reveals that fiction writers of all genres have many experiences in common, such as the "seed incident" that serves as the starting point when writing fiction. In addition, it examines fiction writers' impact on readers, with the implication that everyone--writers and non-writers alike--would benefit from understanding fiction writers' information …

Alumni Oral Histories: A Collaboration Between The Libraries And Development And Alumni Relations, Rebeccca Ciota

This article describes a collaboration between Grinnell College’s libraries and its Office of Development and Alumni Relations on an oral history project in which college alumni are interviewed about their experiences at the college. Such close collaborations between development offices and libraries are rare. This collaboration was successful due to the equal participation of all parties.

Since Wikidata’s launch in 2012 as an open, collaboratively edited knowledge base, it’s held great promise for the library and scholarly communication community more broadly. Institutions and individual information professionals turned Wikidatans are using Wikidata to build a community-owned infrastructure for the bibliographic ecosystem, including open source tools that generate profiles of scholars, organizations, and publications. This workshop will introduce participants to Wikidata and its linked data infrastructure, including opportunities for hands-on editing and an overview of tools that facilitate data contribution and use. Altova MapForce is an intuitive graphical mapping tool for manipulating and converting any structured data, including OAI-PMH XML, into any scheme without specialized knowledge of XML or XSLT. With Altova MapForce, repository managers who lack dedicated XML programming or development support can streamline creation of XML stylesheets and simplify XML conversions. During this session, we will look specifically at crosswalking bepress journal metadata to Crossref Deposit and DOAJ Native XML.

A team of Bryant University Librarians are participating in the EXCITE Transformation for Libraries program through the Connecticut State Library. We conducted a series of structured group and one-on-one conversations with students, faculty, and staff in order to learn about how they think and feel about teamwork, the library, and collaboration at the library. We found that students in particular were far more responsive to community sessions than in taking surveys.

Background: In the development of a new institutional repository, library staff at a large health system were faced with building an organizational structure that would be meaningful to both internal and external users. The health system context meant unique challenges designing a taxonomy that supported end users as well as institutional goals and branding. Health systems have unique user needs for specialized collections and organizational schemes. With a comparatively large volume of items being added there are also concerns with the backend structures to accommodate the institutions’ large research output.

Background: While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Institutional Repository Workflow, Project Management, And Outreach In A Remote/Online Library Environment, Daina Dickman

In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository, primarily staffed by a librarian located in Oregon and a library assistant located in Montana with occasional help from other Library Services staff. Workflow and communication standards had to be created that would allow library staff in multiple locations and time zones to seamlessly launch, populate, and manage the institutional repository. Outreach, instruction, and promotion tactics had to also be created to reach researchers and clinical staff across six states and 100+ locations.

CALASYS is the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)’s academic resource and repository system. The purpose of the system is to collect, organize, and store scholarly publications, library and information science related resources created or contributed by CALA members and others in the library field. The CALASYS Committee will share the experiences of collecting data, creating metadata, and improving access to the data. Mandating contribution of theses and dissertations (TDs) to university archives and their electronic equivalents (ETDs) to an institutional repository (IR) is common practice. Optimizing workflows for archival print copies while managing electronic copies in an IR can be challenging given such factors as embargoes and the skill sets required to ensure theses and dissertations are accessible, discoverable, and ultimately safely stashed where they belong. Collaborative Librarianship

This article describes how four librarians contributed to the founding and first-year activities of a multidisciplinary research institute at a regional comprehensive university. The Institute of Cannabis Research (ICR) is the first multidisciplinary research institute on cannabis, an emerging and often controversial field. As faculty representatives on the institute’s steering committee and working groups, librarians were able to leverage interdisciplinary expertise to assist in organizing and disseminating cannabis research. Examples of the reciprocal benefit to both the institution and the library are shared.

First-year students completing Musselman Library’s portion of the fall 2018 Charting Your Course (CYC) orientation received one of these passports before beginning the activity. After visiting each of the Library departments and learning about work staff members do there, students received a passport stamp in order to track their progress.

Finding and evaluating existing open educational resources (OER) offer particular challenges to faculty and librarians. The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. OER searches tend to include a variety of different learning objects presented in a wide range of formats, which can be difficult to evaluate and compare.

The Orbis Cascade Alliance’s move to standardize metadata across institutions will greatly enhance our ability to share digital collections across the Alliance and beyond. Perhaps no other fields, though, cause more consternation and confusion than the pair of rights statements required by the Alliance and the Digital Public Library of America.

This presentation will describe the work done by the Alliance's Dublin Core Best Practices Working Group to help member institutions assign standardized rights statements. Examples and explanations of why certain choices were made for both the url and free text statement will also be provided.
