Much has been published on digital scholarship support models for large universities, but digital scholarship infrastructures for undergraduate colleges have received less attention in the literature. At Carleton College, we are in the process of developing a distributed collaborative model for support that involves librarians, academic technologists, faculty, undergraduate student workers, and other experts on campus. The leaders briefly described two recent examples of successful collaborations at Middlebury College, instituting Omeka support & running a Liberal Arts Data Bootcamp, before opening up for broader discussions and brainstorming.

Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. The University of Missouri-Kansas City's University Libraries played a major role in starting a campus-wide Graduate Writing Initiative at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The Graduate Writing Initiative is a campus-wide effort to improve the process, quality, and impact of graduate student writing. Despite the challenges of reaching a graduate student population of commuters, full-time workers, parents, and online learners, UMKC Libraries helped devise ways to extend the reach of the Graduate Writing Initiative to all. Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. Libraries struggle with managing the complexities of eBook licensing and access, and staying on top of the differences between vendor platforms. Characteristics Of A Megajournal: A Bibliometric Case Study, C. Sean Burns

The term megajournal is used to describe publication platforms, like PLOS ONE, that claim to incorporate peer review processes and web technologies that allow fast review and publishing. These platforms also publish without the constraints of periodic issues and instead publish daily. We conducted a yearlong bibliometric profile of a sample of articles published in the first several months after the launch of PeerJ, a peer reviewed, open access publishing platform in the medical and biological sciences. The profile included a study of author characteristics, peer review characteristics, usage and social metrics, and a citation analysis. We found …

This chapter details the development and implementation of an Introduction to Digital Humanities course (ENGL 695) at Kansas State University (K-State). The course originated with a tenure-track professor with a research specialty in British Romantic-period Literature and the digital humanities. In conjunction with a host of librarians at K-State Libraries, a course was developed that drew on both library resources and librarian knowledges and skills. Over the course of the semester, the professor and the students worked closely with librarians in many areas of the library, including public services, technical services and special collections. Challenges continue with the representation of non-Roman fonts and diacritics, so authors and titles with these issues may not be listed at this time. Traditional publishing is based on ownership, commerce, paid exchanges, and scholarship as a commodity, while library activities are based on a service model of sharing resources and free exchange. I believe library publishing should be based on those values and should not duplicate or emulate traditional publishing. University presses have mixed views of library publishing, and libraries should not adopt those attitudes. Library publishers are not gatekeepers; their mission is dissemination. Libraries need to publish because traditional publishing suffers from high rejection rates, required surrender of intellectual property, long production schedules, high cost of products, and limited dissemination. The conservation field has articulated the importance of publishing our research to disseminate information and further the aims of conservation. Article X of AIC’s Code of Ethics states that conservators should “contribute to the evolution and growth of the profession, a field of study that encompasses the liberal arts and the natural sciences” in part by “sharing of information and experience with colleagues, adding to the profession’s written body of knowledge.” Our Guidelines for Practice state “the conservation professional should recognize the importance of published information that has undergone formal peer review,” because, as Commentary 2.1 indicates, “publication in peer-reviewed …

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Philosophers of technology are not playing the public role which our own theoretical perspectives motivate us to take. A great variety of theories and perspectives within philosophy of technology, including those of Marcuse, Feenberg, Borgmann, Ihde, Michelfelder, Bush, Winner, Latour, and Verbeek, either support or directly call for various sorts of intervention—a call that we have failed to adequately heed. Barriers to such intervention are discussed, and three proposals for reform are advanced: (1) post-publication peer-reviewed reprinting of public philosophy, (2) increased emphasis on true open access publication, and (3) increased efforts to publicize and adapt traditional academic research.
